Re: The Rockford Files V1 #121 Recycled Sounds bff, der ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 09:19:39 -0400 From: Anne Lyons Subject: Catching Up... Hey all! Whew! I just finished reading all the e-mail that arrived since last Thursday. "Why?" you ask (as you are wont to do)... well, I'll tell you. My freaking car died. Yes, died, as in "clatterclatterclatter CLATTERTHUNK thunkclatterPLUNK thumpTHUNKclatter THUNKTHUNKTHUNKTHUMP shrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiisssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" So yeah, my car just up and quit on me on 495 South, while I was driving in the left hand lane (for all you Brits out there... that is NOT a good thing, as it is farthest away from the breakdown lane)! But I survived. And then walked in the drizzle in my heels up the on-ramp (at least I was close to an exit) to a phone to call hubby (who, thankfully, was already taking the day off). So come to find out, the engine blew. Replacing it would cost more than the car is worth. So we ended up purchasing a new vehicle* (which in and of itself is cool, it's just the circumstances that are not!). Basically, it's been a rough couple of weeks. First the decision to leave the job. Then, my car decides that it is through with me. And it's been raining for the past 10 days (today is the first day I've even seen the sun in over a week). Plus it was an *extremely* busy weekend (rehearsal dinner on Friday, plus hubby was in a wedding on Saturday, plus hubby's nephew had First Communion on Sunday, plus Mom's Day, plus Car Shopping equals a very harried Mike & Anne!). So now I have to catch up on all the news in the RFs from the past 5 days! So, here I go: First: My own Top Ten in actual order (one artist per... I liked that rule! but I had to cave and include some "greatest hits" CDs): 10.) Bob Marley & The Wailers: Greatest Hits 9.) Squeeze: Singles, 45's and Under 8.) Sting: Ten Summoner's Tales 7.) Bruce Springsteen: Tunnel of Love (this was the hardest artist to choose just one album!) 6.) Radiohead: OK Computer 5.) The Pretenders: The Singles 4.) Elvis Costello & The Attractions: Greatest Hits 3.) BFF: S/T 2.) Beatles: Abbey Road (no, wait, I take it back -- *this* was the hardest!) 1.) U2: Achtung, Baby And because even I can't stick to my own rule of only ten... here are my honorable mentions: Beck: Odelay, Abba: Gold (come on! stop ragging on me... just try not to move when 'Dancing Queen' starts up!_), Pearl Jam: Versus, Aerosmith: Toys in the Attic, The Clash: London Calling, Tom Petty: Damn the Torpedos, DMB: Under the table..., REM: Green, Mary-Chapin Carpenter: Shooting Straight in the Dark (and much more!). So that's that. Em and Sandi -- sounds like an **awesome** time, that's for sure!!! I am bummed I wasn't able to go. But now I may have to really put the pressure on you guys to traipse on out to Saratoga!!! Justin! I am STILL giggling at your prom story! That was simply the best! Personally, I would have noticed your manly-manliness in saving the bug rather than the fashion faux-pas of the poodle skirt as rain poncho... You rock! Eric: St. Mark's??? As in the one in Northborough/Southborough area? The St. Mark's that is approximately 17 minutes from where I grew up? The one where Scott Young, the incredible hockey player from Clinton (my hometown), went to school? (actually, don't quote me on that one... he might have gone to another hockey school!). Dude! I had no idea you went to prep in Mass! Hail Eris indeed! Hey -- I coulda gone to your prom (except you are younger than me, right? Bummer! I was probably already in college...) Steve: Jonatha Brook rocks! For those who know The Story -- she is one half of that team. Jennifer so and so was the other half. Jennifer and Jonatha went to Amherst College (my alma mater) in the later 80s. They were part of the singing group The Sabrinas (an a cappella group at Amherst). In fact AC is sometimes called the Singing College because there are so many outlets for singers... including 2 male (The DQ and The Zumbyes) and 2 female (The Sabrinas and The Bluestockings) a cappella groups (all of whom regularly win honors in competitions). Not bad for a school of under 1400 students! But I digress. The Story broke up a year or two back (I think Jennifer was starting a family) and Jonatha went out on her own. I was hoping she was getting play elsewhere in the country (she gets a lot around here, being from around Boston and going to school in western Mass). Anyway -- if anyone gets to see her live... yell "Go Jeffs!" and see if she responds (The Lord Jeffs being our school's team name. Yes. It is the Amherst College Lord Jeffs -- named after Lord Jeffrey Amherst. Yes, yes, I know... not inspired to put fear into the hearts of our opponents. Hell, at least it isn't as bad as our arch-rival Williams College who go by either the Ephmen -- after Ephraim Williams -- or the Purple Cows). Not that you care about the history of NESCAC** schools. The "I'm-Not-Gay" Brigade: Hmmmmm... wery interesting. So no less than four guys out of the 60-80 members on the RF were thought (erroneously) to be gay in high school! And I thought it was tough when a rumor went around that I was pregnant! At least they didn't think I was a pregnant lesbian. Not that there is anything wrong with that. As to you, Markus: 2 earrings and eyeliner in high school? Who were you? Ricky on My So Called Life??? Welp! That is all for now! Ciao, everybody! - -Anne P.S. To the dreamers... no need to thank me! I'm just happy to be here, helping out the team. Just gotta take these one day at a time, and God willing, I'll be able to interpret some more dreams as they come along. * A dark green Honda CRV LX in case anyone cares to know. ** The New England Small Colleges Athletic Conference. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 10:00:19 -0400 From: spencerc@usit.net (Spencer Corden) Subject: Re: From the RF NewsDesk.... Howdy from the land where the family trees don't fork! - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -------- FLASH! WHY NOT TO INBREED...... - - --In Tennessee last week, a 5-YEAR-OLD was ARRESTED for bring a LOADED pistol to his kindergarten class. He was said to have told classmates he was going to kill the teacher, along with other classmates, for receiving a "time-out" earlier in the week. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -------- Okay, first of all.........I'm from Tennessee. Second..........My mother is a Kindergarten teacher. Third..........Not only is that the *funniest* thing I've ever heard, but I immediately forwarded the message to entire staff of the school where she teaches! They loved it! But they still give time outs. Fortunately, the entire staff already packs AK-47's, so it wouldn't be a problem for them. ;-) Fourth......No, Erik. nobody is offended. Stories like this help to distract from our tendencies of eating grits, inbreeding, sinking SAT scores, and refusal to wear shoes at all costs! If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? Fifth......Another reason to give southerners a hard time. I just saw a bumper sticker the other day that said, "North - 1, South - 0----HALFTIME". I'm so damn ashamed. Ugh. Sorry for no Bentent. Whip me w/ a hickory stick in the old shed out back I guess..... We watched from our red rental as you got what you were after (too bad Darren had changed Kim -- you would *have* been twins). We were so glad you got to catch them before they left. We hope you had a great time at the beach. Hey Emily! It was beyond fantastic. Pleasure meeting you, Calvin, and Sandi. I am relieved to hear you made it home safe and sound. Anyone going to Austin? E-mail me before, oh, 11 pm on 5/13 or look for a brunette wearing a white tank top with a blonde girl (narrows it down, i know). 2. Best blurb I've seen about BFF lately (from Music Monitor, a magazine put out by The Record Exchange): Ben Folds Five had better start learning the theme from The Jeffersons because they're moving on up... :) (speaking of the Jeffersons, what's up with those insane Old Navy ads??) 3. um, nothing, but it didn't seem right to only have two things to say! i guess i'll second carrie's point about meeting awesome guys right before you leave.
