I'm so glad to hear that a fellow BFF fan knows that song as well! I heard it when I was a freshman in college years ago thru a boyfriend who absolutely loved U2 - and still know the lyrics, as well. Thanks, Anne, for bringing me back! I FINALLY got to hear Terry Gross interviewing Ben on Fresh Air last night. Took over a week for them to put the interview onto Real Audio. But it was worth the wait - a great interview with Ben (nope, Darren and Robert weren't there). They played a bunch of sound clips from WAEA, too. Has anyone else here heard it? I know it's late in posting, but I loved the Burt Bacharach tribute! My 83 y/o Grandma called me about an hour before it went on, letting me know that she heard that "that band I like" was going to be on TV! She actually caught them on Leno (I actually missed that one) and enjoyed their song and thought that they looked like "nice boys". So I watch the show and see that BFF are the second act (was not prepared for this) and just dug the whole thing! So I call Grandma back (she's local) and gush about the performance with her (she saw it and really liked it)! Too weird - sharing music interests with Grandma! My Mom taped the show for me and she thought that the performance was really tinny (she didn't get the fuzz bass thing), but she did like Ben's haircut. I guess that goes to show that musical interests can skip a generation! I bought tickets to the Grand Rapids show for me and this guy I've been dating (he said he really wants to go). If things don't work out between us, at least I can ask my Grandma to the show (hehe)! Actually, if she were just a few years younger, I'm sure she would probably go with me - she's never been to a rock and roll concert and I think she would have enjoyed it. But her recent mobility problems are a concern to both of us. Maybe I'll try to find WEAEA for her on tape for Mother's Day (you know the older generation is not into CD's). But I know I'd get a lecture on the "strong language" on "Song for the Dumped"! So, does anyone have any ideas for a better gift for her? I don't post much, but when I post, I spill my guts out. Did somebody say that Ben and the boys were chatting up the All Saints girls at that Burt Bacharach tribute show? Because I just read that one of them is pregnant...(!)hehe.... On to stuff that makes more sense....At JamTV they have this thing called the "Anti-Hit List". The author just chooses the best alternative (or non-mainstream) music he can find. BF5 was on there a while ago for the Smoke version on the CMJ disk, and they're on again with the Japanese "Song for the Dumped" (which the guy describes as 'infantile'....bastard!). And yes, I have a point! There's a CLIP! So for all the sad, sad people like me who can't find the import, listening to the 30 second clip over and over is almost as good as the real thing! Yes! About KITH: Just one more reason why you guys are so great....I LOVE it! ("tea...BE GONE!"). And for all of yas that went through a 'Dave Foley" phase....I'm still in it! Mmmm... FL: That fan fic was awesome! I predict big Hollywood moguls will be beating down your door for the movie rights! And maybe there could be a big double-decker bus in it...like that other group that made a movie! I'm getting way too excited... One last thing.....I don't get TNT up here in Ontario...What is it? Oh wait! One LAST thing....If you dream about your friends trying to make you shoplift from Chapters, and Chapters just sent the Tori Amos book you ordered to London, England (ARG!), does that make you a vengeful person? Anne-alyze me please! Shakes! As you'll soon see, I don't have ANY spare time these days so please don't respond to this e-mail unless you think you can help. If you wanna drop a get well note, check http://www.vintageparts.com/summer. Hello BFF folks, My 21 year old girlfriend Summer Brannin (not THE Summer B) was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer and I'm on a mission to have some of her favorite bands call her or visit her. If I could get Ben and the boys to give us a call, send us a card, or (best of all) pay us a visit, it would mean the world to her. Unfortunately, as I write this I fear that they prolly won't be able to respond in time, plus she's not currently very coherent. As you can imagine, having the name Summer Brannin means it's the law to like Ben Folds Five fan. I avoided them after lots of people told me I'd love them because I used to love the band Jellyfish quite too much. When I heard "Where's Summer B?" I wondered why they'd be getting those comparisons and since I'd just started dating MY Summer B, I had to start digging 'em. I saw 'em open for Heather Nova and we met them a couple of times after shows and Ben even asked her to autograph a CD he was holding. Anyways, they're swinging through San Diego in May. Chances are, she won't be well enough to go to the show (in fact as I write this, things have taken a big turn for the worse). If they'd be able to say hi to Summer and it'd give her a big smile. I just don't have time to make the necessary calls to make this happen, so I'm spreading the word to see if you can help. If you're planning on going to any of his upcoming shows, please print out this letter and show it to them. If you can get to them somehow and have them call collect, that'd be fine! In fact, I have a few calling cards ready to give to them so they can get in contact with me. Just e-mail me for my home & work phone if you think you can do it. I recently got David J (ex-Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, & Summer's favorite, The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy) to call her and sing her a tune over the phone when she was in the hospital. Slim Dunlap of the Replacements called us, Neutral Milk Hotel dedicated a song to her at their recent LA show and Jonathan Richman let me video him doing a song just for her. If you e-mail me soon, I can try to call you from my work and let you know the scoop. PLEASE visit the website my friend helped build for her: "See Summer Swing Dance" http://www.vintageparts.com Thanks in adavance for your help, Adam http://mill.net/dumyhead/ dumyhead@mill.net - ------------------------------------------ Hannah Kuhlmann - kuhl0025@tc.umn.edu **FLASHY BEN FOLDS FIVE WEBSITE** AT http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Cafe/1094/ - ------------------------------------------ "I don't like the sound of that sound." - -Heather Graham, Lost in Space ------------------------------ End of The Rockford Files V1 #92 ********************************
