MADONNA SWEEPS 1998 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS; GARBAGE GETS SHUT OUT Little Lourdes isn't the only newcomer to the Madonna household, as the Queen of Pop may need to add an extension onto her daughter's room in order to fit the career- high six MTV Video Music Awards she racked up on Thursday (Sept. 10) in Los Angeles. Garbage, on the other hand, wasn't so fortunate. Despite being nominated for eight awards, the seeming band du jour went home empty- handed. Oddly, Madonna's best year yet comes at a time when her popularity is soaring with critics yet floundering with the buying public, and given that four of her six awards were for professional categories, MTV seems to agree. "Ray of Light" was the big winner, nabbing the coveted Video of the Year award, along with Best Female Video, Best Direction in a Video, Best Choreography in a Video, and Best Editing in a Video, while the dark and brooding "Frozen" clip won for Best Special Effects in a Video. Keeping with the precedent of past shows where the winners more often than not perform the winning song on the show, Madonna, along with special guest Lenny Kravitz on guitar, performed "Ray of Light" live on the broadcast. Behind Madonna, three acts took home two awards each, the most surprising of which was Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up," despite only being shown on the network on an extremely limited basis and buffered by parental warnings. The controversial yet groundbreaking clip won for Best Breakthrough Video and Best Dance Video. Will Smith, continuing his reign as the entertainment industry's king of all trades, walked away with the Best Male Video for the very personal "Just the Two of Us" and Best Rap Video for "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It." Aerosmith grabbed their 9th and 10th career awards for Best Video From a Film ("I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing") and Best Rock Video ("Pink"). This year's most predictable award went to Aussie superstar Natalie Imbruglia for Best New Artist in a Video, while the most unexpected Moonman went to Green Day for Best Alternative Video, the band's first of their career (they had previously been shut out 13 times). Other notable awards included the Backstreet Boys for Best Group Video ("Everybody [Backstreet's Back]"), Wyclef Jean featuring Refugee Allstars for Best R&B Video ("Gone Till November"), Bjork for Best Art Direction in a Video ("Bachelorette"), and Fiona Apple for Best Cinematography in a Video ("Criminal"). The Beastie Boys were this year's recipients of the Video Vanguard Award, whose past winners include Madonna, Janet Jackson, R.E.M., and Guns N' Roses, for 11 years of cutting edge videos and wacky rhymes. The Viewers Choice Award went to (take a wild guess) Puff Daddy and the Family featuring the Lox, Lil' Kim, the Notorious B.I.G., and Fuzzbubble for "It's All About the Benjamins (Rock Remix)." It's only fitting, considering he was in damn near every video MTV has played over past year. All that damn video is is a bunch of scene put in fast forward & Madonna dancing around...so what's so great about that ? Push It was a much better video than Ray of Light, in my oh-so-correct opinion... like i said before, they don't seem to judge the videos themselves much, but instead choose the most popular artist w/the semi-cool video...hell, there are probably videos cooler than Push It that just have never been screened on MTV before...but oh well, not that these awards really mean much, but i do feel a bit bad for Garbage...hopefully they all had a nice night though... kev http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/6273/index.html np: Help The Aged by Pulp on This Is Hardcore "if you stand up like a nail then you will be knocked down" - -manic street preachers ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 15:04:34 -0700 From: mike trumpis Subject: Re: MTV VMA stuff i flipped on mtv last night to see the best video category.. i was very surprised to see garbage actually nominated! anyway, i think radiohead should've won cos they make the better videos. i got the "7 commercials" videotape, it's great. i finally got to see fake plastic trees (only *ok*) and just (brilliant!). this isn't a radiohead list, though. pardon this.... !mike > so yeah...obviously quite disappointing for Garbage...i knew(and even > predicted here) that the Backstreet Boys would definitely beat out Push > It...at least The Verve didn't win anything either...although um...Ray of > Light for Video of the Year ?
