So the inaugural date of Our Lady Peace's touring festival had more than just threat of thunderstorms working against it. With only six weeks of planning, OLP pulled together a challenging mix of music on two stages, plus a third DJ tent hosted by Toronto's hee-hop band BTK and the Carnival Diablo freakshow. While poor sound mired side stage acts Esthero, Hayden, and Fuel, not even clear skies and sound could help Halifax's Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra. Unquestionably the most unconventional act of the day, Johnny Favourite's 13-piece band failed to excite the crowd. (Especially those who didn't appear to have left the beer tent since the sold-out Pearl Jam show the night before.) Snappy suits, cool moves, free candy, and jumping original dance music was obviously too perplexing for an audience raised on modern rock. Concertgoers didn't have to wait long for a fix, as Toronto's I Mother Earth kicked into high gear with their new singer, Brian Byrne. Byrne handled the band's old hits and previewed some new material, which continues in the group's signature heavy groove. His high- energy stage antics kept the crowd pumped while compensating for a voice filled with character but lacking stamina. Garbage's Shirley Mason (whose coiffe and black- and- silver outfit gave her a Keith Flint look from afar) was greeted with cheers, the band's effect- heavy sound crisply projecting across the field. Manson was fiery and loose, chatting the crowd up in her thick Scottish accent and occasionally playing her "sparkled" guitar. Hits like "Queer" and "Stupid Girl" (which was peppered with bits of the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" and Dee-Lite's "Groove Is in the Heart") were accompanied by an "acoustic" version of Big Star's "Thirteen" (an early Garbage B-side), which dropped the backing beats and loops for a pensive moment. After energizing the audience with "Push It," Garbage ended on a more atmospheric note with "You Look So Fine." Our Lady Peace opened with a new song and continued with a tight litany of their hit singles until singer Raine Maida began experiencing microphone troubles. "I'm having a bad night up here," he admitted, inviting the crowd to fill in for him on "4 AM" before wrapping things up under turbulent skies. The Crystal Method kicked off their North American tour playing for the exodus of those eager to escape a downpour or clogged highways. The cool night wind and the constant flash of lightning lent a sinister aura to the proceedings. The duo was shrouded in dry ice blowing wildly and the shadows of scampering stagehands. The ratio of raised fists to glo-sticks indicated that this was not the usual CM crowd, but the band's mainstream techno and Gap- friendly hit "Busy Child" did coax some dancing. The band's half-hour set ended before the skies opened their mother lode, making Summersault another success story, weather speaking. The tour continues for three more dates, with a rotating lineup, which includes Sloan, Moist, and Joydrop. - -- Liisa Ladouceur _______________________________________________ all contents are the copyright ) 1996, 1997,1998 of N2K Inc. any derivative works of this content must hyperlink to and credit: "Rocktropolis allstar News at http://allstarmag.com" ------------------------------ End of recycled-bin-digest V2 #91 *********************************
