We spent three days shooting and it looks terrible." "The first version we saw, it's kind of hard to tell," explains Vig. "It sort of came out very flat and not particularly with flattering lighting, because almost every frame he tweaks out in a computer, so there's a lot of post- production stuff to give it that old Twilight Zone look, or Technicolor, '70s Starsky and Hutch look. You can see there's also detail in the frames as they go by, which makes it easier to watch on repeated viewings. So the first one was very flat- looking and didn't have a lot of that stuff. Andrea kept saying, 'Don't worry, don't worry. This is just the canvas I'm going to paint on.'" Naturally, Vig and his bandmates were quite pleased with the outcome of the clip and the response it elicited from fans. "We worked really hard on it, and Andrea worked really hard on it. I think it got a lot of great feedback when it came out, so it's cool, but even more so for Andrea, that we got all those nominations." Even with his film school background and obvious knowledge of music videos, Vig says he's not exactly looking to direct one of the band's clips anytime soon. "I met [bandmate] Steve [Marker] at film school and we've talked about trying to direct some of our own videos, but we would kill each other if we did that. It's hard enough to make a record with four really opinionated people. It's good for us to have someone to interpret what the song is about." As reported in allstar, Garbage is up for Best Group Video, Best Alternative Video, Best Direction in a Video, Best Special Effects in a Video, Best Art Direction in a Video, Best Editing in a Video, Best Cinematography in a Video, and Breakthrough Video. Which one does Vig think the band will take home? "In this band, we never expect to win anything," he laughs. "It's that self- loathing factor. If we win anything, it will be cool, but it'll be fun to go to the awards regardless of whether we win." But if they could only win one award, which would he want it to be? "I think maybe something like the Breakthrough would be cool. It's kind of a nod to us and Andrea at the same time." No word yet on whether Garbage will end up performing on the show, which will be held Sept. 10 at Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles, but if asked, they'd likely say yes. "Last I heard, we were in the running for it, but as usual there are 100 acts they're trying to get into a certain number of slots. If we were asked, we'll probably do it. But, personally, it's more fun to go to those shows when you don't have to perform. There's a lot less pressure, you can just hang out and enjoy the event." And get sloshed? "Well, that comes afterwards." - -Carrie Borzillo ______________________________________________ all contents are the copyright ) 1996, 1997,1998 of N2K Inc. any derivative works of this content must hyperlink to and credit: "Rocktropolis allstar News at http://allstarmag.com" kev website updated w/neato new stuff at: http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/6273/index.html np: nothing "i wanted to rub the human faith in its own vomit -and then force it to look in the mirror" j.g. ballard ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Aug 1998 12:08:13 -0700 From: Mike Trumpis Subject: Re: piercings... > > > >ok, i just thought i'd tell everyone....i got my navel > >pierced.......that's all...bubye > > > >neat-o! My guess would be that if they put out a video like the first one the nudity wouldn't be censored. NIN has a few vids with similar censoring (Closer being the first one to come to mind), but there isn't any censoring in the home video. I guess nudity is included for artistic purposes, but the fuzz could possibly be the intentional piece of artistry.
