I'm sorry, but I'm not that fond of some of the new stuff. "Thirteen" is a mistake live too if you ask me. For all that though, it was a good laugh. Duke is clearly the coolest man in rock - how anyone can't see it is beyond me - and he has some cool guitars! Oh yeh. The garbage atricle in Total Guitar didn't happen, though they said it would. It's not the first time they've done that. Sorry! Bye Dan. np Fatboy Slim - The Rockafeller Skank ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 13:39:12 -0400 (EDT) From: Ian Abbott Subject: Report from the road Hi all, Well it's Wednesday morning and I am bloody knackered right now after all these shenanigans. So... Starting with Brixton - amazing show (though the crowd didn't react very well, causing Shirley to slag off Brixton the rest of the tour) and the *only* time they used this cubes background cloth (backlit blue it looked fantastic). I missed the first three songs that night due to some earlier drinking sessions but the band were on top-form. Alas, couldn't get into the aftershow that night as it was a London launch party and very very strict security, though I briefly saw the gang outside the Dogstar before they disappeared upstairs. Security was so tight they almost stopped the band and the MD from Mushroom from getting in... :) TFI was *short*. We got over to the studios around 3.40pm and bunped into Shirley about 4pm. A little chat about the show, nerves, forthcoming dates and so on before the recording from 5pm til 6pm. Garbage waited around on stage whilst things were prepped (this was during the "We're on the ball" song, Steve and Dan bouncing up and done in time). They then did "Push It" and were off into the dressing room. That's all, honest guv. Carrie and I are directly in front of Shirl if you're wondering - about 3 feet away. Good show, though the crowd are treated like cattle and Chris Evans remains an arse. Newport was, well, hmm, ok. The crowd basically didn't get into the show at all and Shirley's monitors were fucked up causing her to get extremely pissed off. Stupid Girl became Stupid Stupid with Shirley just screaming into the mike and her wandering around stage in a huff. Vow was *loud* as a result with Shirley finishing off with just "I feel upset". To *normal* audience members the show was good, but Carrie and I could see it wasn't for Shirley (I think all the shows were top-class though). As a result... no aftershow. Yep, they didn't want to see anyone - even Butch's sister and niece didn't get back that night. Manchester was a great show with the crowd bopping up and down going "Shirley, Shirley, Shirley" and Shirl taunting the audience in her own little way (inbetween fits of manic laughter). The aftershow was in this little pool room round the back. Very cosy and not many people. Carrie and I just sat lounging in the corner watching the band doing their meet-and-greets and afterwards they would one-by-one filter over and chat. Duke was his usual cool, flirting self (admiring Carrie's trainers) as we chatted about all manner of things including cable-tapping (don't ask), Butch recounted the horrors of the Newport show and the show where her ring was stolen, Steve popped in and said hi (a rare thing indeed), Shirley just sat and chatted for ages whilst Dan and Duke's daughter played pool (though Duke kept moving the ball when Dan wasn't looking). Wolverhampton - another great show. We bumped into Duke in the lobby and had yet another chat before grabbing a bite to eat and wandering around town. Another good show. Aftershow was in a ratty little bar behind the stage area. More long chats after meet-and-greets (Butch wandered past - "I know you two already" before chatting to some journo from Norwich). Carrie's trainers got more fans in Steve and Shirley and we've some interesting photos of the two wrestling. Finally, Portsmouth yesterday. We finally braved the mosh pit and were dead-centre in the front. Shirl spotted us immediately and taunted us all through Not My Idea. Later on she dedicated Queer to Carrie and myself, asked us how the show was going and so on. So I pray that there is a bootleg of that show in the works as we are immortalised on it. Shirl kept giving us these big grins and sticking her tongue out at us. Bloody hot and I was drenched and squashed but it *had* to be done. Ended the evening up in the dressing room drinking champagne with the band - mainly chatting with Dan. After Select mag took a bunch of photos the band shuffled off towards Sweden (they left this morning) but not before a big hug and kiss from Shirley. That night was "the best show so far" according to Butch. Set list: well you think after all this I'd remember... It starts with "Dumb", "Not My Idea", "Push It", "Queer", "Special" and then in some order "Medication", "Hammering In My Head", "My Lover's Box", "Stupid Girl", "Temptation Waits", "I Think I'm Paranoid", "When I Grow Up", "#1 Crush", "Vow", "Trip My Wire" and "Only Happy When It Rains". Encore was "Thirteenm", "Girl Don't Come" and "You Look So Fine" (with an extended coda - Shirley still has to refer to a chord list pasted on the floor for this - it'll come with time!). Roll on T-In-The-Park. Cheers A weary Ian on Cloud 9. PS Sorry to Claire last night. There was *no* way you would have got into the dressing room. It was literally just the band, people from Mushroom, a Select journo and photographer and Carrie and I. Hope you didn't wait too long... PPS Thanks Suzi for putting us up in Manchester. See you around soon!
