We got to the concert at 8, half an hour after Talvin Singh started. We had been wandering around the Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan neighborhoods in DC, looking for a record store called Flying Saucer Discs. Instead we ended up at DC/CD, which had two copies of the UK vinyl of Version 2.0, and a packet of square V2 stickers. We took the whole packet and, since we hadn't brought our tickets with us, had to go back to my dorm. So we missed whatever posters were up on the walls before the show, and of course meeting the band before soundcheck, and soundcheck itself. Talvin Singh mixes well but the music he was playing just wasn't interesting. He didn't get a huge negative reaction or booed off stage, just claps of relief when he finished. A couple people up front thanked him. They had for sale 5 t-shirts, V2 square magnets, and a poster of the pic of the band in the V2 liner, big white border. No hats ::/ I got the tour t-shirt, midnight blue with the orange ball on the front, tour cities on the back (includes N. America and Europe). The other shirts were: an orange one with V2 in white on the front and http://www.garbage.com on the back; a white shirt with the pic of the band in the V2 liner, web addy in black on the back; a babydoll t-shirt with the garbage ball in orange (not as cool as the supervixen shirt from the first tour was); and a black shirt with a grey pic of Duke on the front, a red gun site over his left eye, looking like the Terminator or something. Duke's shirt is cool... At 10, the lights came down and lounge/luau music started playing. I can't tell you the name of it, but you know it when you hear it...after about a minute the band came out, Shirley walked out and they started Push it. Shirley was wearing a sleeveless white shirt and a pink skirt-I could swear she hasn't changed her tour wardrobe since I saw her in 96 ;) No pink mic stand/feather boa. Butch's drums, mostly the cymbals, were shielded behind some glass or plastic. His headphones never flew off, no matter how hard he threw his head as he played. I was about three people back from the stage, in front of Steve, stage right/my left. He looked nice and freaky geeky with his cling glasses, and jumped around a lot and frantically played his guitar. He had a keyboard set up next to him and would switch over during songs, and then back to guitar. Dan on bass looked like he has shaggier hair than on the pic on The Garbage Pail website. ;) I couldn't see Duke much, but Marc (from Pittsburgh on trash-talk, who came with my boyfriend) assured me that he was jamming for the whole show. Push it starts and the crowd immediately starts tapping their feet. By the chorus everyone up front is jumping. Shirley growls the words with a fierce look in her eyes, yet you can still see that she's really enjoying herself. Her hair is up, like a ponytail but pinned, keeps it out of her face as she bounces around so much. Dumb Queer Special This rocks live. Finally convinced my boyfriend that it's a cool song ;P Instead of background vocals in her high register, a guitar fills in for Shirley. They don't stop the background beats when the song slows in the middle, the drums keep going. Fix Me Now Beautiful... My Lover's Box Shirley pulled out Rita for this one. (Rita is her red sparkly guitar) She sounded a bit off singing, but it's hard to really tell... Hammering in My Head "Sweat it all out!! Sweat it all out!!" The ranting at the end reminds me so much of the end of Vow during the last tour, when Shirley would storm offstage...here, she sneers the ending to the audience. "From *Tokyo*..to Los Angeleez" Medication My boyfriend and I were ready to "fall asleep" during the first verse, then the chorus kicked in and WHOA!! Very cool ::) People started clapping when the song stopped near the end, then suddenly "and still you call me co-dependent..." Actually, I heard a lot of people singing along to many of the songs, for the whole concert. It was nice to see that people knew V2 well already. The crowd singing wasn't too bad since Shirley was much louder, and my boyfriend and I weren't standing near any annoying screamers or singers. Stupid Girl LOTS of bouncing around for this one Temptation Waits Trip My Wire Vow No ranting ending here, but "YOU'RE SO VAIN!!! YOU'RE SO VAIN!!! YOU'RE SO VAIN!!! YOU'RE SO VAIN!!!" #1 Crush They played the remix I Think I'm Paranoid More bouncing! ::) When I Grow Up A crowd surfer finally braves the bouncy fans during this one. (There was no mosh pit during the show) It's really fast, and all the silly little bits heard on the studio version pop up here. Only Happy When It Rains The band exits, and people keep screaming and clapping for a couple of minutes. Encore: Thirteen The crowd mellowed out for this one. It shows off how good the band can be even without all the electronic-y stuff. The lines "Won't you tell your dad 'Get off my back'" and "Rock and Roll is here to stay" got many cheers from the audience. Girl Don't Come You Look So Fine Shirley had a white guitar for this one. Everyone was silent at the end, watching the whole band play away. The show ended and we waited for the band at the backstage area, but they chased us out. We went to the alley to wait for the tourbus. We handed out some V2 stickers and listened to the bouncers rant. At 1, they told us that the band was going to NY and weren't going to sign. We got a cab and left. Now I read they signed stuff...grrr. I do hope I get to say Hi to them someday... Oh, last thing, the lighting. Everything was flashing during Push it and Hammering in My Head...Shirley danced a lot and looked terrific with the lights on her and behind her...lots of pink, orange and some green lights that complemented the music well. Another great advantage of a small club show ::) Can't wait til they come back!!!! - --Michele Michele Santiago, shell@poe.org The Spirit of Serramonte Will Never Die! ;D http://members.aol.com/vr5sbloom/psychovixen.html For Live 105 stories, P(*)E links, VR.5, Buffy, Mono, and other cool places on the {{{{{Web}}}}} Watch VR.5 on The Sci-Fi Channel, Monday nites at 10pm Eastern 7 Pacific!!! They had the signed lithograph for sale. Same as the one GarbageZone sold, but the signatures were in black ink, and at least the display one wasn't numbered. I couldn't tell if the signatures were original sharpie or printed. I wrote: >a babydoll t-shirt with the garbage ball in orange Well DUH the ball is orange , I should have said that the t-shirt is white. Talvin Singh spun for about an hour and a half, and Garbage also played for an hour and a half. The beginning of "You Look So Fine" really does sound a lot like the beginning of "I Touch Myself" by Divinyls. The front skin of the bass drum is black, with garbage written in white in the Chicago font.
