TOUR DEBUT Shirley Manson may not wear a bra, but she definitely favors black panties. Her exhibitionist- length skirt made sure everyone was aware of that. But that was as revealing as the Scottish singer was willing to get on the opening night of Garbage's world tour at San Francisco's Warfield Theater on Wednesday (May 20). The antithesis of the confident vixen she pawns herself off as in the music press, the petite, crimson- haired Manson paced the stage cautiously as the band began its stiff set promptly at 9 p.m. The singer consistently diverted attention away from herself, doing what she could to avoid direct physical interaction with the audience. Throughout the first half of the show, Manson appeared to be stuck in paralysis, just managing to get her vocal parts out over the mechanical grind of Garbage's trendy racket. Even when the band kicked into the familiar strains of "Queer," the roar of the crowd failed to break the singer out of her nervous spell. After one particularly long and uneasy silence between songs, Manson mustered, "This is our first gig of our world tour and we just had our first technical fuck-up." She then dashed offstage until the rest of the group -- guitarist Steven Marker, guitarist/ keyboardist Duke Erikson, drummer Butch Vig, and an anonymous bass player -- worked out the glitch and started the pulsating intro to "Stupid Girl." It became clear early on that the material from Garbage's sophomore album, Version 2.0, didn't stand a chance against that of its platinum 1995 debut. The monorhythmic tracks from the new disc, including singles "Push It" and "I Think I'm Paranoid," barely inspired a ripple of polite applause in the theater. Instead, it was the alternative radio filler -- "Only Happy When It Rains," "#1 Crush," "Milk," and so on -- that made any kind of impact. Toward the end of the set, when Manson finally started to relax, the band seemed to liven up as it showcased a decent B-side called "Trip My Wire" and a trashy version of "When I Grow Up." For the encore, Garbage bravely, perhaps foolishly, took on Alex Chilton's Lolita- inspired Big Star ballad, "Thirteen." But the only ones who truly seemed excited were the journalists at the back of the room, frantically scribbling into their notebooks and comparing their respective Bjork sightings. You've raised over $3500 at this point, and I really appreciate your support!!! Earlier this week I ordered the new hardware for smoe.org, which cost $4600 (drop me a note if you're interested in the technical specs on the new gear). It arrived today, and I'm taking a few days off work to get it set up and in production. At some point between Saturday and Tuesday, smoe.org will be shut down to install the new hardware. The downtime will probably be 4-6 hours. During the time we're off-line, mail will be queued up at my ISP so no mail will be lost. I'll send out another announcement once the new gear is online. Thanks again for your help! - -Jeff P.S. If you've been meaning to send in a check, Mike Connell is still accepting donations. Contact him at ducksoup@spectra.net for more info. ------------------------------ End of recycled-bin-digest V2 #53 *********************************
