The awards are given by the performing rights organization for the most performed songs on radio and television from Oct. 1, 1996 through Sept. 30, 1997. The night's biggest honors are for Pop Song, Songwriter, and Publisher of the Year. The BMI Pop Song of the Year went to Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" for writer Jim Steinman (who wrote most of Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell) and publishers Lost Boys Music and Songs of PolyGram International, Inc. Four writers earned the Pop Songwriter of the Year award: Crow and Jeffrey Trott ("A Change Would Do You Good," "Everyday Is a Winding Road," and "If It Makes You Happy"), Babyface ("Everytime I Close My Eyes," "Last Night," "Not Gon' Cry"), and R. Kelly ("I Believe I Can Fly," "I Can't Sleep Baby [If I])." This marks Babyface's seventh Songwriter of the Year award, and his 48th BMI Pop Award total. I guess these two songs are starting to prove my "Oasis theory" wrong(multiple albums of basically the same thing...it gets stale)...so i'm glad they're making me eat my words...I do prefer I Think I'm Paranoid to When I Grow Up though...that's the one where they use the sample from the Pretenders girl, right ? and if so, where is it in the song ? kev http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/6273/index.html np: Oh Bondage Up Yours! by the X-Ray Spex on my stuff-taped-off-the-radio tape "Fight against radio! It came with the promo >>Independent Access<< and has Trip My Wire, #1 Crush, and Subhuman. It has a square saying Coalition of Independent Music Stores, and Compliments of: so I wonder what other indie stores might have this. Promo number is AMS5P-8045. Anyways, about the CD packaging...I think the inside liner pic, similar to the pic on garbage.com, should have been the front or back liner...much cooler, gets more attention... About the album overall - this is very much a pop album. I personally think they spent so much time making sure you recognize the echoes to 80's music and such. It feels familiar. Many tracks have a lighter feel to them, although the lyrics aren't always light, another pop standard...it's been said that this album isn't as depressing and dark, well guess what, grunge in that vein is dead or gasping for breath, depending on how well bands like Creed can keep getting airplay ;) As for the lyrics themselves, they're different from the first album but I can't quite put my finger on it yet...They seem to be more story-ish in a way, instead of descriptions that could mean many things...so in that way, I guess Shirley is right in saying that the writing is more direct. Notice I'm not being specific, and haven't really talked about the music, guitars and effects and all, but I've only listened through twice so far and I don't want to spoil the whole album for anyone. Addressing Kevin though: >When I Grow Up: >heh...also a happy sounding song..."god i'm >pregnant, damn the consequences" is a nice line, although the tone of the >singing doesn't make it as good as it could be...i don't mean the >singing's bad, but err...yeah...i can't explain it...again, doesn't sound >much like the first cd... Well to me, the irony in that line comes from the chorus that comes next: "When I grow up, I'll be stable." She deadpans the line and then the chorus comes, as if she's saying "Well I'm young and foolish, consequences suck but oh well!" If the "Unprotected/God I'm pregnant/Damn the consequences" line had been stressed differently, she'd be wallowing in teen/young adult angst instead of saying, d'oh! I screwed up but I'll be fine later... That or I'm full of bs ;P ;) I like the song and am horrified at the same time at how Garbage could record something like an 80's sit-com theme. Cracks me up. I'd like to see that released and watch people go, what the hell is this??? >do prefer I Think I'm Paranoid to >When I Grow Up though...that's the one where they use the sample from >the Pretenders girl, right ? and if so, where is it in the song ? I think you mean "Special" and I'm not sure about the sample...I think it's at the end, "we're the talk of the town" and my dumb brain can't even remember what song that's from. UGH but I really like Shirley's singing in this one. Another thing about the album as a whole, Shirley is mostly singing or singing/speaking with the distortion, throughout the album. I would have liked to hear more of those vocalizations that blend with/become the music, like in Stupid Girl or #1 Crush... That's it from me, looking forward to hearing this live. I nabbed a couple of Version 2.0 flats today, still need some posters... - --Michele Michele Santiago, shell@poe.org The Spirit of Serramonte Will Never Die! ;D http://members.aol.com/vr5sbloom/psychovixen.html For Live 105 stories, P(*)E links, VR.5, Buffy, Mono, and other cool places on the {{{{{Web}}}}} Watch VR.5 on The Sci-Fi Channel, Monday nites at 10pm Eastern 7 Pacific!!! If the "Unprotected/God I'm pregnant/Damn the > consequences" line had been stressed differently, she'd be wallowing in > teen/young adult angst instead of saying, d'oh! I screwed up but I'll be > fine later... > well, i guess what i was trying to say was that it would've been a better line if she had put more enthusiasm into it...a good example is if you've ever heard "Flagpole Sitta" by Harvey Danger and the bit where it's like "they cut off my legs now i'm an amputee, god damn you!" and it's really upbeat and you can tell the singer feels pissed off(even though i don't think the song is a serious song)...so what i'm saying about the whole pregnant line is that it shoulda shown her to be more pissed off, instead of just another line that most people won't notice...anyways, if she did do the line w/more enthusiasm and being more pissed off, it would/could still be interpreted as "i screwed up, but oh well"... also, i think the speaking bits during "I Think I'm Paranoid" reminds me a lot of the speaking bits from Fix Me Now, except done in a more normal speaking voice versus the more whispery voice of Fix Me Now... kev http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/6273/index.html np: I Think I'm Paranoid by Garbage on my stuff-taped-off-el-radio tape "Fight against radio!
