"We've never gotten to the point where it becomes comfortable or rote. It's always kind of a struggle to make it work, which, I think, is good because it's never complacent at least. There's always something going wrong or blowing up... somebody forgetting what they're doing." Pre-tour time is especially nerve- wracking for a band like Garbage, given the heavy studio tinkering they perform on each of the tracks on their sophomore effort, Version 2.0, released Tuesday (May 12) on Almo Sounds. Some songs on the album, which was created mostly on the computer using Pro Tools, even took up to 100 individual tracks each. Therefore, making it work live isn't exactly the easiest of tasks, and the band realizes that. The tour begins May 20 in San Francisco with Talvin Singh DJing as the opening act (allstar, May 8). "You have to come to terms with the fact that it's not going to sound exactly like the record," says Marker, "and hopefully the live energy and festive atmosphere or whatever can take over and fill in the gaps of what you aren't able to do from the record. "You know there are keyboard parts missing, and obviously, not all the background vocals can be there and all that," he continues. "But we'd rather keep it more like a real rock band when we're playing live. We use a lot of technology... we have triggers that are playing synthesizers at times. It's not easy, but we seem to have arrived at something where people enjoy it." Meanwhile, the first Garbage single, "Push It" (with the Beach Boys line "Don't Worry Baby") continues to gain momentum at modern rock radio -- it's No. 5 with a bullet on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart this week. The second single from the album looks to be "I Think I'm Paranoid," with remixes by Crystal Method and Purity (allstar, May 8). Marker feels that one of the biggest differences between the band's 1995 self- titled debut and Version 2.0 lies with singer Shirley Manson. "Shirley was a lot more confident, and she really took the lyrical reins and did just about all of them. I'm sure that comes from feeling more comfortable around us. "The first album was much more the four of us throwing out ideas, and it was a little more indirect because it wasn't just one person doing it," adds Marker about the lyric- writing process. "Shirley would sort of pick and choose what she wanted to use. This one... I bet she was kind of surprised by herself that she actually ended up writing all the words. We really didn't plan it that way, but she was coming up with all this stuff that seemed to mean a lot to her, which enabled her to sing in a very believable way. I mean, you can tell she's sounding stronger on this record. And I think that's because she knows what she's talking about, even if the rest of the world doesn't." _______________________________________________ all contents are the copyright © 1996, 1997,1998 of N2K Inc. any derivative works of this content must hyperlink to and credit: "Rocktropolis allstar News at http://allstarmag.com" Send comments, inquiries, hot scoops and slow wet kisses to contact@allstarmag.com. - -------------------------------------------------------------------- To get off, please email: remove-allstarmag@list.allstarmag.com To climb on, please email: join-allstarmag@list.allstarmag.com To comment, please email: allstarmag-owner@list.allstarmag.com kev http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/6273/index.html np: Shadowboxer by Fiona Apple on WOXY "Fight against radio!
