I personally consider it quite a masterpiece in its own right, the best music video I've seen in a long time (not that I've watched many lately). I don't claim to understand what it's about, nor do I quite get what it has to do with the music, but the visual imagery is extremely impressive. I don't know what it is that seeing the video does to me, but it certainly does something... I guess there's a rather perverse sort of enjoyment to be gotten from completely incomprehensible art. Or something. Anybody know what the symbol is that's painted on the naked woman who rises from the bathtub? To me, it looks suspiciously like the one used by Einsturzende Neubauten, the German industrialists, but I might be completely mistaken. Juha P.S. Are the B-sides on Garbage singles good enough that they're worth getting (not for collecting, I'd like to have something to listen to). That is, do they come close enough to the Garbage on the albums, or are they just...well, garbage? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 May 1998 18:26:42 +0300 (EEST) From: Juha Sorva Subject: Re: survey thyme! Hello all, I don't think I have the time to fill up kevin's survey form right now, but I'll give a brief free-form introduction that answers some of the questions there. I'm Finnish, and have lived in Helsinki, Finland for all of my 21 years. I study at Helsinki University of Technology (Artificial Intelligence / Computer Science), and also at Helsinki University (Linguistics). I'm not a diehard Garbage fan, really, but I do like them a lot (enough to join this list for example). My first contact with the band was, not surprisingly, when "Stupid Girl" was on the charts. I guess hearing that brilliant song should have made me get the album instantly, but for some reason I never got around to buying it until I found a really cheap copy something like a year ago. Currently, my huge collection also includes the "Stupid Girl" single. (And "Version 2.0" will be added ASAP, of course). Never seen Garbage live yet, but they'll be coming to Finland this summer... I hope I'll be able to see them then (Actually, I have no idea at all what they sound like live). As for my favourite Garbage songs, well, I'll name "Stupid Girl" and "As Heaven is Wide". My least favorite song is definitely "Only Happy When It Rains", it just doesn't do anything at all to me. My very favorite musical artists are, in no particular order, The Sisters of Mercy, Happy Rhodes (the ecto mailing list is what originally lured me to smoe.org), Tori Amos, and Kate Bush. I won't even bother to list other favorites, as the list would be too long. Anything from Japanese pop to heavy metal, from folk music to industrial (etc.) is okay, if the particular band happens to strike my fancy. I think that's all I have time for now... Juha n.p. OK, about that Japanese G cd...I looked for it forever, like a couple of years or something, then my uncle nearly ordered it in Japantown for $30 cause he knew I'd pay for it. As I was thinking about it, about two weeks later we went to Borders in Palo Alto and there was the Australian Vow single for $10. I happily got it and informed my uncle that I could live without the Japanese cd. Now of course, the Japanese G cds are for sale all over the net...I like my awesome Australian cd, though ;D For the record, I have all the songs except all the Milk remixes and the OHWIR single remix...I know it's not much different, but that's me being anal again. I won't bore anyone with my list of Garbage releases, as I've gone on long enough already. Merchandise is just as interesting, anyway. If you read through all this, 1) go out and get some chocolate, look away from the monitor! 2) Why did you read the whole thing? E-mail me back and tell me, make me feel loved! and 3) It took me a little over an hour to type it all out, and since you had time to read the whole damn thing, why don't you try it? ;> Okie then, I won't bug you again (much...yeah right) unless it's time-sensitive or is personal, as I have with a couple of you I've e-mailed but haven't said anything about myself...I don't feel comfy posting on trash-talk, since you know there's established posters and all there already, but I might make myself cozy here. Hear for yourself as we debut tracks from Garbage's "Version 2.0." Shirley Manson and crew will comment on each song and offer their overall perspective on their music, all brought to you by Rocktropolis and The Album Network. As previously reported in allstar, Crystal Method (who are playing a string of European dates with the band) will be remixing "I Think I'm Paranoid," which looks to be the second single from the album. That remix is slated for the B-side of the single. In addition, the band's bassist, Steve Marker, tells us that an English female group named Purity did a remix for "I Think I'm Paranoid" as well; and a Japanese duo named Boom Boom Satellites recently remixed the first single, "Push It." But will there be a remix album in their future? "I don't know about an album; maybe in a few years, a couple years, but probably not soon," says Marker. The band's label, Almo Sounds, had no information on release dates for any of the remixes, which will all likely serve as B-sides to singles. In other Garbage news, on Tuesday (May 5), the release date of Garbage's Version 2.0, allstar's sister site, Rocktropolis will present an interview with the band and premiere the album at 1 p.m. (EDT)/10 a.m. (PDT). The hour-long special is in conjunction with The Album Network. _______________________________________________ all contents are the copyright © 1996, 1997,1998 of N2K Inc. any derivative works of this content must hyperlink to and credit: "Rocktropolis allstar News at http://allstarmag.com" Send comments, inquiries, hot scoops and slow wet kisses to contact@allstarmag.com. - -------------------------------------------------------------------- To get off, please email: remove-allstarmag@list.allstarmag.com To climb on, please email: join-allstarmag@list.allstarmag.com To comment, please email: allstarmag-owner@list.allstarmag.com kev http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/6273/index.html np: nothing 'The place is quiet & so alone Pretend there's something worth waiting for' -Manic Street Preachers ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 May 1998 23:40:55 -0400 From: "kevin" Subject: Talvin Singh grabs attention of Garbage, Madonna TALVIN SINGH GRABS ATTENTION OF GARBAGE, MADONNA Also, Garbage Plan Full North American Fall Tour Garbage has invited English drum- and- bass maestro Talvin Singh to serve as the opening act for the band's forthcoming six-date promotional tour. Singh will DJ before Garbage's set each night. "We like his aesthetic or his taste," says Garbage bassist Steve Marker in an interview with allstar this week. "We wanted to do something different, other than getting some band and having them play in front of us that no one is really there to hear." Singh, who has toured with Massive Attack and Bjork, will be on all of the six dates, which are: May 20, San Francisco, Warfield Theatre; May 21, Hollywood, the Palace; May 24, Toronto, Phoenix Concert Theatre; May 26, Boston, Avalon Ballroom; May 27, Washington, D.C., 9:30 Club; and May 28, New York, Roseland Ballroom. Garbage will head to Europe for festivals there, beginning June 1. ("The Beastie Boys are headlining some of the festivals we'll be at, I'm looking forward to seeing them," says Marker). Marker tells us to expect Garbage to embark on a full North American tour this fall. Meanwhile, in other Singh news, the artist has been sent a bunch of songs from Madonna for him to remix. No word yet on which songs or when and where they'll be released. Singh's debut solo album, OUT, which stands for "organic universal technologies," is due on Island in late August or early September and will feature classical and jazz performers, as well as a street musician. It's his follow-up to 1997's compilation Talvin Singh Presents: Anokha -- Sounds of the Asian Underground. - -------------------------------------------------------------------- To get off, please email: remove-allstarmag@list.allstarmag.com To climb on, please email: join-allstarmag@list.allstarmag.com To comment, please email: allstarmag-owner@list.allstarmag.com kev http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/6273/index.html np: nothing 'The place is quiet & so alone Pretend there's something worth waiting for' -Manic Street Preachers ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 May 1998 00:11:00 -0500 From: "Michele Santiago" Subject: Re: survey thyme!(part one) On 8 May 98 at 23:12, kevin wrote: (Responding to his own survey, the other one is my long rambly entry ;) > > 5) You look like this famous person: > > > > None, as there aren't really any famous asian males...and I don't look > anything > > like James Iha, so yeah...
