I can't wait to go get the album after work so I can add my two cents. It does seem, though, that starting with Boys for Pele, Tori's albums have always been polarizing. Some fans leave her upon a new album's release while others become even more endeared to her. Personally, I've loved everything she's done, with the exception of Strange Little Girls, which elicited only a lukewarm response from me. Yet I do find a few gems on that album. I completely understand that bee sides are dead, and how Tori feels that she should release her songs in hopes that they'd reach someone somewhere, but when that decision jeopardizes the structure and story of the album then I think it's time to release an ep. Take Scarlet's Hidden Treasures for example. Six excellent songs that, in my opinion, are better than most on the actual album, were released at a later date on a different project and are just as vital as the album babes. Mountain is now my favorite song by Tori and had she not released it on that elusive website for Scarlet's Walk I would not have had the chance to have this love affair. So I agree that she should release her work, but not necessarily on one album if it is comprimised in the process. Read this article and pay special attention to the last question and Tori's answer. http://martin-jan.typepad.com/mjblog/2009/05/my-interview-with-tori-2009-beau tiful-photos.html To me, Abnormally Attracted To Sin feels like two different albums smashed together. I think one of it's major faults is that it doesn't have the seamless flow like Boys For Pele, Little Earthquakes, To Venus And Back, and Scarlet's Walk. And another complaint is that the Bose is so hidden; I miss her presence so much! There are a handful of songs on the new album that I absolutely love- Give, Flavor, Curtain Call, Ophelia, and Lady In Blue. Then there are some songs that I like- Fire To Your Plain, Police Me, Mary Jane, and Starling. I find that everything prior to Scarlet's Walk doesn't get much play from me, even though sometimes I'll just be in the mood for, say, Little Earthquakes (etc.)... and play it. the thing that still has me surprised, though, is that I'm STILL listening to ADP from end to end when I listen to it. there are NO OTHER ALBUMS, by ANYBODY, that I do this with--usually, after a few months of listening to an album from end to end, I start picking my favorites and skipping the rest. I've found my favorites on ADP, all right, but I still listen to EVERY SINGLE TRACK when I listen to it. and it's two years later. so for me personally, I have to say that ADP is probably the best album ever made. even better than Michael Jackson's Thriller, if you know what I mean. (I used to be a hardcore fanatic of MJ in high school) I hope I feel similarly about AATS, but time will tell. - -- Cyndi S. I'm loving AATS, in particular Police Me and Ophelia. As for the popular view that the extensive track listing has broken up the feel/flow of the album, I can't be sure that I agree. I don't believe that it is possible (outside actual segue) to have a feeling of continuity while still maintaining varied styles of songs. I think that listening to an album in order, you come to accept the way the pieces are lined up and that always takes a while. Choirgirl, one of my favourite discs has 'Jackie's Strength', so completely different to the rest of the album it seems out of place; but after living with it, I now come to expect it to be there, like the coffee table that you no longer bang your shins on in the night. I'm still banging my shins on 500 miles but I'm confident that soon it will feel as comfy as the couch! Thanks for the good reads everyone! Odds are I will pre order it tonight in order to get the password for the ticketmaster presale - marketing victim ;) but there are songs I like on here but nothing grabs me emotionally yet and there are tons of moments I'd wished she had recorded or produced differently. Having said that I do feel that there is a bit more of an effort from her to experiment with sound!! Even though it sounds as if the most influential sounds came from Twin Peaks!!! I am glad there is discssion on the list! miss it!! - -ellen - --- On Fri, 5/15/09, Lisa Zwick wrote: From: Lisa Zwick Subject: Re: [pt] new cd To: "Laura D'Amico Holzmann" , precious-things@smoe.org Date: Friday, May 15, 2009, 11:17 PM Cn't say much about it yet, since all I heard were the 30sec clips. But I do have to say...I appreciate that Tori always releases FULL cds with 17 songs. Some artists release cds once they have 30-40 min worth of new material, but she always gives us our money's worth! - -Lisa - -----Original Message----- >From: Laura D'Amico Holzmann >Sent: May 15, 2009 10:45 PM >To: precious-things@smoe.org >Subject: [pt] new cd > > >I am only 5 songs into the record (mp3's) and I am getting very >excited about it. B I guess I figured if I checked the website I wouldn't miss anything but I guess I have to check my email more often! B After reading the news on her website about everyday I thought that it was just her UK dates that you got a presale password for if you pre-ordered AATS. B Did I totally misunderstand that? B If so, I am very much bummed at this moment :( Angela - -----Original Message----- From: e m To: precious-things@smoe.org Sent: Mon, 18 May 2009 7:41 pm Subject: Re: [pt] new cd I have to respectfully disagree - while i love that all the songs get released I'd much prefer a cohesive album and then an EP with the extras. There is an art to putting together the songs themselves to tell a sonic story and she used to be so into fretting about every song and the order, and now it just feels like a big "here ya go, you do what you want with 'em". I have listened to the album, and am actually debating for the first time whether or not to actually buy it!!
