Always, Tori - Tori Amos' autograph on a Y Kant Tori Read poster, 1988 Posted 12/14/2007 9:59 PM CST In 1988 I received an album by a band called Y Kant Tori Read for consideration on KLOL-FM and my Sunday night radio show, Exposure. Before I start, let me first say that plenty has already been written about that album and I'm not about to rehash any of that. I merely want to share my personal story and introduction to the artist who at the time, I only knew as "Tori". I was already a fan of Kate Bush, so I was intrigued by some of the songs that were in a similar vein. I started playing "Cool On Your Island" and "The Big Picture" on my show Shortly thereafter I was contacted by her promotion person and asked to do a telephone interview. Tori's last name did not appear anywhere on the album and I even wondered at the time if her last name was "Read". In the interview, she was very evasive about her name, but we had a nice chat and talked about a few of the songs. When I was wrapping up the interview, I did something I had never done before and haven't done since. I asked her to sing an "I.D." for my radio show. You hardly ever hear artist I.D's on the radio anymore, but I asked if she could sing, "you're listening to Exposure with David Sadof on 101 KLOL". She was reluctant at first and asked, "well, how would I sing it?" I suggested she sing it to the tune of "Cool Of Your Island" and she did exactly that, even adding a little bit extra. She [sang], "You're listening to Exposure with David Sadof on 101 KLOL, baby". Perfect! A week later and completely unexpected, I received a (now rare) Y Kant Tori Read poster from Tori that read, "David, I'll sing for you anytime, just make sure I get more than one take, ha. Always, Tori". I have seen Tori many times since then including her most recent concert at Jones Hall. Fortunately for Tori, I have been unable to find the tape of that interview. After her performance in 1998 at The Woodlands, I had the opportunity to meet her after the show along with my friend, Tammy. First she spoke with Tammy and then I told the story about our telephone interview and the I.D. that she sang for me. She turned to Tammy and asked, "Has he played this for you?". "No", Tammy replied. "Good," she said and then turned back to me, continuing and pointing as if she were a school teacher, "David, let's keep it that way". ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V12 #118 **************************************
