I didn't pre-order the cd, and now I'm fighting the urge to buy it for about $20 or so plus tax at B&N today, since Amazon now has it for only $13.99 - only $1 more than the regular version. Is there some catch here? I was surprised enough when I saw it go down to $15.99. But this price makes me wonder if there's something wrong with the 'special edition' Amazon is selling? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 May 2007 12:56:29 -0400 From: Wendi Sopher Subject: [pt] american doll posse Well, the day we have all been waiting for has finally arrived. I'll be honest and say that I have had my copy of ADP since Friday evening. My cousin sold me a copy on Friday when he got them in. But I promised I would be quiet about it until today :) Quick first impressions: After giving it a couple of listens I must say that I really, really like it. There are a few songs that I could do with out (mostly the little short songs) like Programmable Soda, but since they are short they don't really deter from the rest of the album. I am not a big fan of You Can Bring Your Dog but I think that has more to do with the guitars on it than anything. They sound like cheesy 80's hair metal guitars. I am excited to see how she arranges these songs on tour without a guitar player as the album is very guitar heavy. I haven't had a chance to watch the DVD yet. I am in love with Almost Rosey and right now it is my favorite song on the album. Anyone else out there have any thoughts on the album so far? I know that it has been getting some mixed reviews. It seems like people either love it or hate it. Not a lot to it, but it's fun, and I was interested to find that it was bookended with Tash appearances. I'm also a little surprised to see that the promo photos were done on the Martian grounds. She seems to have taken 100% control over every possible aspect of putting out this record to a degree I'm unaware of anyone else on a major label having done. I'd love to get the audiophile LP of this that Tori mentioned in an interview, but I haven't come across it in the scavenger hunt that finding and buying the special edition of this CD became. Anybody have any hints? Maybe the LP won't be out for a few weeks or something. Please kindly forgive me if this was officially announced, as I've been too occupied with work to have focused on this as I might have wanted. I didn't listen to it yet, but I have played like the first two thirds of it at volume, and could tell it's sonically startling and satisfying. I also called an EWF friend with a major label and told her: "Well, she's got her Grammy, just from the packaging alone. This is the most astonishing thing I've ever seen." Haven't heard back from my friend about this yet with her opinion, but she said she had it on her desk. This was like 11:30 this [Tuesday] morning. I'm talking about the special edition; I haven't seen an open copy of the regular edition. I researched where to buy this over at least two days. I called my local Borders Sunday evening and they knew nothing of any special downloads (and didn't even know what the hell I was talking about, to be honest). Target had only the regular edition, and I had a 10% off coupon for one item at Borders I was able to use, and that came off the 10% discount they already had on it, so that was okay. Honestly, the packaging is a marvel, and I wouldn't care so much about that usually, but the way the characters were presented with their bios was making a lot of sense to me, and it's intensely gorgeous. I know some have made fun of the characters conceit, but it's like the guy last night who for some reason started talking to me about Sinatra and insisted that he wasn't that great a singer: if you aren't getting it but I am, and plenty of other people are too, then it's in there to be gotten. Looking forward to being rested enough to really listen to this soon! I sense she's in the pocket on this one! And I say that as someone for whom Scarlet was his most personal album, although Pele it still the benchmark overall. > I know that it has been getting some mixed reviews. It seems like > people either love it or hate it. I don't know, I've seen a lot of reviews, and most have said it's too long and had other complaints, but they were also usually more positive than negative. I think overall the reviews will encourage people to check it out. The question is always whether it peters out soon on the charts, or keeps some strength. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V12 #29 *************************************
