None of her dad's churches since Tori's been alive look much like the building in the photo. The closest one would be the Rockville church, which is mere blocks from where I am every day, so I'm familiar with it more than the others. The best photo of it that I could find online is the ghosted-back background image from their website. http://www.gbgm-umc.org/rockville-umc/Easter_2003_for_Website2.jpg The Silver Spring church is brick, http://www.goodshepchurch.org/church.jpg and so is the Epworth Chapel west of Baltimore. http://bwc.brickriver.com/files/oChurches/bbqljxgs_church.jpg The Georgetown church isn't even a freestanding building, and is also brick. http://www.monarcconstruction.com/images/dumbarton.jpg The Potomac church is like a huge white mansion with columns in front. http://potomac-umc.org/index_photos/217.jpg And the building in the promo photo doesn't look much like any of her family's old houses, either. I understand that many people *really* want everything to be strictly autobiographical in this way, but it isn't. I do think Cyndi's right that the red dress is the dress from Gun, but that she's drawing on her personal mythology as a composer and performer with that, and I think she's doing that also so fans can get the feeling from it as a symbolic reference they know. (Although it references such a specific known thing as to come close to being more sign than symbol.) The house in the promo photo gets its symbolic depth from being a dull, grey, suburban type house at first glance, but also from echoing standard cathedral design--a dual symbol. Because of the dress-Gun reference and because both shoes are damaged, I think the image is of one who has been raped, rather than one who is merely menstruating. The Magdalen imagery (coming out of equating one who is a loose woman with one who was raped) also expresses the Divine Feminine, so in that sense, I agree with what Kelley said about that. If Kelley or anyone else has any thoughts on that, I'm interested in hearing them. I'm just glad Kelley posted her thoughts so I feel less out on a limb with *mine*. One could even see the two shoes, the bible, and the handwriting (pun), as being placed where the nails were for the crucifixion. I feel less confident about that aspect of the image than I do most of these other things in it, though. This has gone precariously near being a discussion, hasn't it? Imagine such a thing. ;-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2007 04:12:53 -0500 (EST) From: handal@r2d2.reverse.net (Richard Handal) Subject: Re: [pt] Tori's new picture.. And I just noticed that the lowercase letter a in SHaME forms a nice circle in the middle of the palm where we think of a nail being driven in the crucifixion. I'm not sensing any other particular ideas behind it now. I may just be dense. Maybe something else will totally click later. I was discussing the bungalow with my other half today (my god/s, how he humours me!) and we reached a consensus that it looks like a typical early 70s to late 80s British style, possibly extended with the double garage in the mid 90s. If it had been built in the last ten years it would have been "brick effect bricks", rathen than the now unfashionable "stone effect bricks", you see. But are we just being brit-o-centric in our bungalow deconstruction? - were bungalows built out of that same stone effect the world over? Ah it's wonderful how mad he must think I am. At least I've saved him from discussing Britney's haircut. I love the way we on the list are dashing to excited thoughts about what the record might sound like, based upon one picture. And quite right for us to do so it is (6 consecutive two letter words? that's a first for me, but I digress) Notice how the burgular alarm and security light are above Tori's left hand shoulder, the side with the bleeding and the SHaME [is she a fan of The Shamen who ran out of palm? ;o) ], there's an air-vent to the side of her hip, ok I'm pushing it here... But lots of thanks to whoever spotted the church layout connection, my parents didnt bother to hold my head under for a second so I'm always missing that kind of reference. And it does remind me just a little of the BFP cover in a "in front of a building" sense... I have no idea, but she said it looked awfully familiar to the one seen in one of those VH1 shows (Behind the Music or whatever). Anyone know? Thanks!
