Yikes. So much for the wonders of TiVo, huh? Can't one prioritize Tori on one's TiVo over other things? I have no idea; I'm stuck in TV analogland. > so... how was it? I thought it was wonderful; one of the best TV performances ever, although not quite up to the level of the April Leno and not to the level of expression of the Seattle radio version of Sweet the Sting she did the day after the April 21 Leno. Some disagree. I sought comments elsewhere and found people complaining that it was too slow, too drawn out, or just plain awful. Some have complained about this being the situation at recent concerts they attended; one person said in a review Michael put up on The Dent for a concert a couple weeks back that he walked out of the concert because he couldn't deal with it. What a loss for him! Her style has come more and more to utilize tempos shifting within phrases to the degree that a lot of people are clearly not connecting with the performances--some are longtime Tori people. If one can learn to not rush mentally in anticipation of the next beat or note and to take the music as it comes on a moment-by-moment basis and ride it like a wave or a roller coaster, one can discover a deeper relationship with this music and with music in general. She does this purposefully as a tool of expression. I think it's clear that awareness of this way of listening is slipping away as simpler and more robotically-driven tempos become the main experience people have of music, and as the contemporary cultures move further away from the kinds of music that require this finer application of listening which, for example, "classical" and jazz tend to. A great shame, that. And I want to say again as I did in April, that in many markets Leno is rerun one week later after Last Call, so I've programmed my VCR to record a second copy late Monday night/Tuesday morning next week around 3am on my local NBC station WRC channel 4 here in Washington, D.C. And I hope someone makes a video file folks can download this time. If anyone did this for the April Leno *I* haven't seen it. Someone please have mercy on us digitally-challenged people. We may give in other ways. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2005 12:48:52 -0700 From: Brian K Tanaka Subject: Re: tori tv reminder - leno tonight! The recording gremlins tortured me too! I set my DVR to capture it, but I used the built-in guide rather than setting the times by hand. (I mean, that's what it's for, right?) This morning I woke up to find that I had the first half of the song, and then *woosh* nothing. (Leno ends slightly later than the guide believes.) And not up to the level of the KINK Live 8 version. (Oh, but speaking of which, did anyone else on this list attend that show, and notice that she dropped the "love let me breathe / breathe you in / melt the confusion" part? I still can't resolve in my mind whether or not she did it.) > Some disagree. I sought comments elsewhere and found people complaining > that it was too slow, too drawn out, or just plain awful. What a loss for him! Well, we know Tori changes things over time and even from performance to performance. If people can't take it, they're welcome to walk away; I'll gladly take their seat! > Her style has come more and more to utilize tempos shifting within > phrases to the degree that a lot of people are clearly not connecting > with the performances--some are longtime Tori people.
