I played it first at home but I didn't hear all the little details, > like the background noises in Beekeeper, until I heard it through > headphones. I understand very well what you're saying, Lisa. I absolutely believe that repeatedly listening to music under generally favorable circumstances as you describe can help one become used to it and wrap one's head around it, and surely headphones can draw one's mind onto the sonic stage with great profoundness. I would never seek to deny that. I submit, however, that with most types of music, if this is the only experience one has of it, then something is missing from what's available when the complete body is *also* able to engage with it. The "total body" experience of music has been given short shrift in the West. Anyone who's ever blasted the hell out of some punk music on a stereo has craved some of these effects. Musicians of the Hindu tradition are aware of some of them, and discuss them in ways that remain largely absent from the consciousness of Western listeners and musicians. One's nervous system exists other than just on the path between the ears and the brain. If one is able to be exposed to music at a sound pressure level strong enough such that the *totality* of one's nervous system is presented with it rather than only what enters through one's ears, a deeper experience is available. No matter how and where anyone listens to music, if there are distractions, that's not a great listening environment. One reason for playing back music on a great reproducing system is, in fact, because one is more likely to be focused on it and to be less distracted, and this trait is also fostered by listening with headphones. This gets to reasons why I feel the concert experience can elicit strong, deeply felt reactions which aren't always as available through listening to a recording. At a concert, one goes to and is in a physical space with many like-minded people where the social situation directs one's focus to what the artist is presenting. Other than the few who seem to decide to attend a concert for no reason other than to talk to one another and annoy people, one arrives at the venue and expects everyone there will direct their fullest of attentions to the business at hand. And it's easier to concentrate on experiencing music when one isn't tempted by email or phone calls, and where the focus of the entire environment is oriented toward a musician's performance. Headphones can indeed offer similar aid. I need to be clear that I understand many live music performances are in bars or other places where the environment serves as a distraction more often than it reinforces an experience of the music; I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about an environmentally music-positive concert situation. Some aesthetically relevant aspects of the concert experience are not purely aural ones. *Seeing* a performer play, sing, or even conduct provides valuable cues which can help those in the audience engage with the music. For hearing details of a recording and analyzing them, and to assist one in getting inside the sonic stage in a manner that's extremely engaging mentally, decent headphones can do an excellent job. It can be easy to get carried away when listening through headphones. *I've* certainly had intense listening experiences with them. Because the tiny speakers in the headphones are close to one's eardrums they can offer great, crisp detail, and there's a place for that in one's life. Many people who listen with headphones often feel tempted to turn the volume up until it's injuriously loud. That's because they're sensing a lack of the full experience they've had with music in other situations, and they're trying to find it through their ears. They cannot. What they're missing are sensations felt by the body in a sonic environment of a sufficiently physically-engaging sound pressure level. The Beekeeper has a great deal of deeper, body-shaking bass sounds on it paired with some *physically* startling percussion. Some of a person's reactions to those aspects of music have little or nothing to do with the thought-processing parts of the brain or with hearing. Even if your headphones go down into the bass end low enough such that you can hear it well, unless your entire body is *feeling* it, you're missing things that I consider some of the more wonderful facets of a full musical experience. A poor to mediocre stereo system can't provide all of that, either. That was my point. If your stereo doesn't cut it or the environment where it is provides a lot of distraction, by all means, use headphones to get the best experience you can. But I hope everyone has the opportunity one day to live with an amazing stereo. It makes a difference. Thank you for this opportunity to explain myself, Lisa. From what I heard, Seattle, NYC and La sold out really quickly. Chicago was only giving away balcony and back of the row orchestra seats for the most part. Even all of the scalpers on ebay are currently trying to scalp balcony seats. I don't understand this sale at all! If my warped humor (I was giggling when I typed) constitutes a crime, Then I am as bad as the crack-pot who wrote the article. Please excuse this psychotic outburst. I am not mean. I'm pretty much a goody two shoes (don't drink, don't drug, don't smoke, rarely curse). I try to live my life as a good spirit. I believe Tori's music helps me to attain this goal. Pete, thanks for your message. I will be sure to securely engage brain when this crazy stuff gets in my head. The review should have stayed hidden away where not many would have ever have read it (thanks Mike), but regardless, the writer should not have brought Tori's daughter into it. I am a "mad nutter" when it comes to Tori so I will retreat back into my private wonderland. Peace! LOU - --- pete lambert wrote: > >Well you better be careful because I am going > > to look for you.
