It feels like your entering this trance of eternal peace, just the music itself. Then the lyrics are also amazing. I hope she plays this a lot on the tour. It doens't sound like a song that's gonna come often, but I hope it does. My second favorite track is Parasol and then Original Sinsuality. Love her voice on OS!!!! and it being the only completely solo track. I also enjoy Barons of Suburbia, General Joy, Ribbons Undone, Hoochie Woman, Toast and Mary's of the Sea! My least favorite track is however, Witness. I don't know why. Jamaica Inn is also not my thing, but I'm sure they'll grow on me. The rest of album for me is just, cool. Scarlet's Walk is still my all time favorite though. And, I'm not a new fan either, I know alot of new fans tend to like the new stuff. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2005 18:17:51 -0500 From: "Lisa Zwick" Subject: Re: Stylus Magazine review wow...that really is screwed up. I played it first at home but I didn't hear all the little details, like the background noises in Beekeeper, until I heard it through headphones. The album as a whole really grew on me as I walked with it each day or sat on the subway with it. It blocks out everything else, whereas at home I get easily distracted from it. After spending so much time alone with the album, I've really gotten attached to it. But there is one thing that really bugs me - Barons of Suburbia. I know the lyrics are great 'n all...and the song even starts out with a pretty good sound. But once she gets to the potion/poison bit, I feel like my skull is gonna split open! I've tried and tried and tried to give it a chance, but I simply can't stand it. It bothers me that it starts off so inviting and then pushes me away once I'm drawn in. Thinking about it, the asshole who wrote it would probably get an ego boost from hearing our complaints. It did feel good to send him a very nasty threat though :-0 ohhh nooooo! more below It shouldn't bother me what others think of this album. I am happy with it. Tori's voice has never sounded better. The male vocals are refreshing. The piano and organs are unexpectedly quiet though. Sometimes it seems the drums are overpowering. Tori playing gospel music is an oxy-moron. What was she thinking? I know, I'm not in control. I do wonder how these songs will hold up with only Tori and keys since they do rely heavily on the bass, drums and hauntingly sweet backup vocals. It's not that he thought it was no good, however (everyone's entitled to an opinon). It's the fact that he suggested that the only way the album would be any good would be if "someone has the decency to abduct and kill her daughter". I'm sorry, but that's just sick. What is this guy thinking? It sounds to me like one of those things that most people go through--you have a thought that you think sounds great.. until you actually say (or write) it, and end up offending a lot of people with it. I (and quite a few other fans of Ms. Amos) would like to see something done about this. An apology, an "oops, I'm kinda stupid" letter, or *something*. He crossed the line with this suggestion. People make mistakes, yes, but this was a BIG one. Thank you. Sincerely, Cynthia S. Perhaps it's because I'm not a native English speaker, but that's not how I interpret it. He merely seems to argue that it would take another tragic/traumatic experience for her to create another great album, citing previous albums (FTCH and LE) to prove his point. Though I don't agree with his reasoning, I don't see this as a call to abduct or kill. The fact that he uses the word 'decency' in the same sentence as 'abuct and kill' is so over-the-top that it screams "don't actually do this". It's not like he's the first critic who claims that only artists in pain can create good music. He just frases it a bit more explicit than most. Tasteless perhaps, but that's a matter of taste. > > (You can read the whole review on the website. The review isn't as negative as it seems from reading the reading the reactions here. He passionately dislikes Beekeeper, but obviously likes her earlier work (until scarlet's walk). I think he even admired her as a person and is just *very* disappointed by the recent albums. Personally, I prefer reading reviews from people like this than from a reviewer who hardly knows her music and played the album too little to remark anything more than "sounds like Kate". I've listened to "The Beekeeper" about four or five times now. No one song stands out as my favorite. It's more like there are three layers of songs: ones I love, ones I like, and ones that don't do it for me. I haven't been able to sit and read the lyrics yet, and that is very likely to change my opinion. Ones I love: Parasol, Sweet the Sting, Witness, The Beekeeper, Goodbye Pisces, and Marys of the Sea. All of these are awesome. I think that The Beekeeper or Witness might emerge as my favorite on the CD eventually, but right now it's very close. The vocal arrangements in Witness are excellent and so different from anything Tori has done before. I think Marys of the Sea is going to kick ass and take no prisoners live. I can't wait! I hope that is one she plays frequently. Ones I like: Power of Orange Knickers, Jamaica Inn, Barons of Suburbia, General Joy, Cars and Guitars, Martha's Foolish Ginger, Hootchie Woman, and Toast. General Joy is funky and makes me wanna get down; same with Hootchie Woman and that also makes me laugh. Toast is very pretty. Does anyone else think that Power of Orange Knickers sounds a little like Girl? Ones that don't do it for me: Sleeps With Butterflies, Mother Revolution, Ribbons Undone, Original Sinsuality, and Ireland. Sleeps With Butterflies and Ribbons Undone are just a liitle too sweet and sappy for me. I know they come from a heartfelt place, but I just can't get into them. I like the idea of Tori doing some reggae, but Ireland just leaves me cold. It's my least favorite. However, it gives me a glimmer of hope that Tori will finally cover "No Woman, No Cry" like I've been dreaming of for years. Well, that's the CD as I see. It's a little early to rank it, but I think the quality is level is similar too Scarlet's Walk. It's not Pele or Earthquakes, but what is? Cheers, Tom M.
