I adore you, Jen. Please don't feel bad. I do wish more people would come to appreciate the beauty and pleasures of ambiguity, though. Not believing one knows something can leave one's mind dancing with possibilities. There's an openness to that, rather than a closedness. Not holding onto something as fast as you can has much to be said for it. Hi, All: Tony commented it's way cool that my chiropractor's receptionist was Tori's French teacher all three years she went to junior high school. It is, but surely *others* live around here or someplace else near where Tori has lived. It's just a fluke of geography that this happens to me. Other Tori people live in the area and must have had similar experiences. When I looked through a few reels of local newspapers on microfilm at the Rockville library in 1997 and came across this little charmer, I gasped. http://thedent.com/toriat13.html A girl looking through microfilm at the next reader asked me why I'd gasped. I said I'd just come across what I thought was the earliest known published photo of Tori Amos, then known as Ellen. The girl sitting with her said, "Her father christened me." Of course he did; the Rockville library is two blocks from what had once been Dr. Amos's parish! I started at a new job in the late summer of 1996. After about three weeks, a woman from a different department breezed through and left some papers near where I was working, and as she was about to exit through the other door she stopped, turned, and asked me if I went to science fiction conventions. I told her that I didn't. After a short pause I added, "I don't go to science fiction conventions, I go to Tori Amos concerts." This stopped her in her tracks, and she replied by saying, "*You* go to Tori Amos concerts? *I* go to Tori Amos concerts." Her best friend was homecoming king to Tori's homecoming queen in high school. She'd seen Tori perform as far back as 1980. A couple years earlier I was riding alone in an elevator where I worked when a woman got on. After a couple seconds she turned to me and asked, out of the blue, if I'd heard that [local guitar legend] Danny Gatton had committed suicide that morning. I told her I had not, then I asked if she'd heard that Tori Amos had collapsed backstage after a concert the night before in Madison, Wisconsin. As she was walking out onto her floor the next moment she said to me, "I went to high school with her." She told me later that she'd sat near her in homeroom. There was an accident on our street a couple years back, and one of the attending cops was talking to me for a couple minutes before he left. I made some comment about having driven around the country several months previous. He asked me where I'd gone and I said all over, as I'd driven a lot of miles following music. In non-Tori contexts these days I usually strive not to mention her, but after a quick exchange he asked again whose tour I'd followed and I said Tori Amos. He instantly remarked something to the effect that his brother used to date her. (I'm still not sure what he said, it had been a traumatic accident in front of our house late in the evening. This was merely the capper.) Anyway, you get the idea. This is barely the tip of the iceberg. It happens with regularity and it's always cool, but for me, it's normal. If I lived hundreds or thousands of miles away from here *that* would seem odd to me, now that this is what I've grown accustomed to. I've heard a few such stories of coincidence on the regional Tori list, but it's been pretty dead for a long time. Surely someone else here must have similar tales. It's a big list, and someone besides me must live in the D.C. area or another place Tori spent a lot of time in her early days and have stories to tell of things like this happening to them. Let's hear them! It's always fun. Nothing too personal or I'll get embarrassed to hear it. *I* ain't tellin' the more revealing ones. I thought I would add one.. I teach Music at a school/agency in Baltimore that is owned by the Methodist church.. Tori's dad is also active in this agency, which is cool.. and also we were invited to play at her fathers old church.. and behold there was the old old piano tori used to play on, while her father was pastor at the church.. you know where the song evergreen(i believe it was) and the wedding songs for tori stories were recoded..I was just in heaven to be able to touch the piano.. hehe just thought I would through that tidbit.. anne ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2005 12:33:06 -0500 From: "Wendi Sopher" Subject: the beekeeper I received my copy of The Beekeeper today from the Sony Music Store! I think of the character from the song of the same name, which Tori -- as many others from our generation *cough, cough* -- undoubtedly heard a lot while she was growing up. http://users.cis.net/sammy/bojangle.htm I imagine that she performed it herself at least once in all her years of playing bars. It's a song that was frequently heard in those types of establishments back then. It's coincidental to note that I heard a street performer playing/singing this just last weekend in Berkeley. (Kim's comment to me at the time: "I never could get into this folk crap." Bleh.) Hearing it done so simply, with just voice and guitar, took me back to my favorite performace of the song ever, on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, way back in the Dark Ages (okay, the late 60s). I was really young at the time, about 5 or 6, but that particular performance stayed with me so vividly. The song always makes me cry, especially the part about his dog dying. More adventurous top 40 PDs could spin "The Power of Orange Knickers" or "Cars and Guitars" and finally bring her some much-deserved airtime. As a whole, though, "The Beekeeper" doesn't passionately smolder like previous outings, instead shooting off bright sparks ("Original Sinsuality") and damping the flame ("Ribbons Undone") in equal measure. The grave title cut underscores its theme of death with buzzing noises that sound like a sinister infestation. The London Community Gospel Choir accompanies the artist on several tracks, heightening the sensual slink of "Sweet the Sting" and "Hoochie Woman." Per tradition, Amos closes the proceedings with a poignant goodbye, the ballad "Toast.".CLT ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2005 15:54:01 -0500 (EST) From: Richard Handal Subject: RAINNews Update! I gotta give the "young whippersnappers" of my generation a break here.. but the girl who sold me my copy of Tori's book (I just got home an hour or so ago from getting it.. WOOHOO!!).. she said "what is it, like, a series or something?" I'm like "no, it's actually her autobiography." and she looked at it to double-check who it's by and she was like "who is she?" so I said "oh she's a musician--she plays piano and writes songs." so she goes "so what style of music does she do, classical?" I said "no, she sings too. just go to her website.. toriamos.com and check her out, you'll see what it is and I think you'll REALLY like it. it's GOOD stuff!". so.. hopefully she takes me up on that piece of advice... but man alive, I'm sitting here all aghast! she looks at least sixteen to eighteen years old, about the age I was when I found out who she was.. so.. I gotta give her a break, man alive. but.. hopefully I've turned her onto Tori now. ;) we'll have to see... *evil grin* all I know is it's a scary thought--to me--when you mention a relatively well-known musician (certainly not like Michael Jackson but.. to a somewhat lesser extent) and you get question marks on their faces. of course, like I said twice, I gotta give people like this girl a break. I'm sure to have pulled similar faces with favorites of other people's. but.. has anyone else felt similarly with Tori--or other artists like her? I mean the yapping about her/them and then getting an absolute blank look (or "who?") bit and so on? Sincerely, Cyndi S.
