If you've never seen her perform, RUN, DON'T WALK to get a ticket. Run with scissors if necessary. In fact, eat a big lunch, go swimming IMMEDIATELY after (hell, eat your lunch IN the pool), get out, and run on the deck OF the pool WITH scissors in your hand to get a ticket! Ani would probably like that. The amazing thing is that even a pretty conservative person (like I used to be and still am occasionally) simply cannot argue with the things she says between songs. And the things she says in her songs. But her banter and missives between songs are really spikey and thought provoking. Kinda like Tori used to be back in the early 1990s. I really wish Tori would talk more between songs. She was close to being a stand-up comedianne at times, especially whan she talked about her religious elders. Anyway, DiFranco in 2008. Your comments about the moments before a Tori concert really touched me. I have a different take on those anxious moments before the lights dim and our goddess walks on stage. DISCLAIMER: I'm sorry I get so political sometimes. I really am a fun person if you break through all the walls and get to know me! But here goes nothing. As a man I am disgusted and appalled by the way women are treated (such a poor word in this case - a treat should be something good...) by men. That's really what the whole middle east war thing is about. The men there treat women and girls like shit. The men like it. They like getting away with it. If the women and girls start seeing Old Navy ads on TV, they will probably say "Hey, wait a minute, this sucks, I could be smart and hot and educated and employed, instead of being enslaved and raped and hit with sticks and kept in a fucking sleeping bag with a peephole in 150 degree desert heat...". But I digress. When I walk into a Tori Amos concert I am reminded of some very disturbing facts. I think it's like 1 out of 3 women in the USA have been or will be raped or sexually assaulted in their lifetime. ONE OUT OF THREE. Since Tori has a large following of victims, it's more likely that 1 out of 2 women in the crowd have been raped. Or even more. I look around at the faces of all of you. I ask myself which ones were raped. I engage in a thing called remote viewing and watch these horrible crimes commence. I can't help it. It lept into my head one night, around the SLG tour, with the Eminem opening, and ever since then I am so very haunted by it. I look at all of your faces, and you all put up such a brave front, and it makes me want to vomit, thinking of some crappy man brutalizing you, and the road you took to get to Tori Amos, to the church that is her live performance, to the place where you can finally start to deal with it because Tori has dealt with it and can show us all a tiny little trail or path where we can stop cutting ourselves and let these precious things bleed and wash away, and make me whole again. I'm really sorry to take this dark stroll through hell in public, but that's what I think about when I walk into a Tori concert. All these beautiful girls and some crappy man tearing away their pumpkin pjs and doing horrible things. http://www.rainn.org For what it's worth, men and boys can be victims too. The stories I could tell. As some of you might remember, I started a thread in 2003 asking everyone to list their top 10 favorite albums of all time. I thought it would be fun and interesting to see what commonalties us Toriphiles had in terms of albums (not necessarily artists, but I will touch on this as well). Anyway, it was my intention to make some sort of compilation list from all the lists we submitted. So, after 2 years I decided it was about time!!! 27 people responded with their top 10 albums, and those are what I used to figure out the below stats. Not everyone included Tori albums in their lists. But, from the ones that did (and of those, only ones that listed them in order of preference) here is a tally of Tori's albums in order of preference. I gave each album a score of 1-10 depending on their order in peoples' lists (ie, a "10" for being number one on a list and a "1" for being number 10) and then figured out the percentages. Remember, the lists were made in 2003 at some point after the release of Scarlet's Walk but before Tales of a Librarian: 1) Boys For Pele (34%) 2) From The Choirgirl Hotel (18%) 3) Under The Pink (16%) 4) -TIE- Little Earthquakes (15%) 4) -TIE- Scarlet's Walk (15%) 5) To Venus And Back (2%) 6) Strange Little Girls (0% - None) Here is a list of most-mentioned albums in order of times people put them on their list (I chose 3 times as the minimum number, otherwise the list would be quite large). For example, 4 people listed Nine Inch Nails "Downward Spiral" as one of their top 10 all-time favorite albums. Bjork - "Vespertine" (6) Sarah McLachlan - "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" (6) Nine Inch Nails - "Downward Spiral" (4) Nirvana - "Nevermind" (3) and "In Utero" (3) Smashing Pumpkins - "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" (3) and Siamese Dream (3) PJ Harvey - "Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea" (3) Radiohead - "OK Computer" (3) Tool - "Aenima" (3) and "Lateralus" (3) The Cure - "Disintegration" (3) And if anyone cares, I myself have 6 out of the 12 above albums. I have over 500 CDs and consider myself a fairly typical obsessed Tori fan (although not as much as I used to be). There are several artists worth mentioning that kept showing up on peoples' lists. It's interesting to note that some artists weren't listed as much as others, even though a particular album of theirs was. For example, "Verspertine" by Bjork is tied with "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" by Sarah McLachlan at 6 each, but Bjork was on 11 peoples' lists whereas Sarah MacLachlan was only on 6. (More people liked more of Bjork's albums, not just "Vespertine". The only album people listed by Sarah MacLachlan was "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy"). Here are the artists that were mentioned most often (a minimum of 3): Bjork .......................11 Nine Inch Nails...........8 Smashing Pumpkins...7 Radiohead..................7 Tool...........................7 The Cure....................7 PJ Harvey..................7 Nirvana......................6 Sarah McLachlan.......6 Ani Difranco...............4 Madonna...................3 Pink Floyd.................3 Led Zeppelin..............3 Joni Mitchell..............3 Cocteau Twins...........3 Pearl Jam..................3 Of the 16 above artists, I have 10 in my CD collection. If anything, I'm definitely going to narrow that number down soon! I'm all about discovering new music I haven't heard (or owned) yet! Anyway, I spent almost 4 hours going over everyones' lists to make this. I thought my timing was appropriate since someone had recently started a Tori favorite album thread and our mounting excitement over the new album and book. I hope it was worth it and some of you get some sort of enjoyment out of it...I certainly have gotten more than my fair share of enjoyment reading all of your messages on Prescious Things over the years Any comments or discussions would be very welcome!!!! I would also be particularly interested in hearing how many of the above albums & artists are in peoples' music collections! Tony What's more likely? That an all-powerful mysterious god created the universe and then decided not to give any proof of his existence? Or, that he simply doesn't exist at all? I'm sure Tori will have interesting things to say, but I'm not sure I would have chosen to pay for tickets just to listen to Tori do an interview. In this case my best friend bought tickets for us both as a birthday present for me, based on the idea that it would be Tori both talking and singing/playing a bit, and I'm sure she's going to be disappointed when she find out that it's now just going to be the "conversation" part of things. It'd be nice if the 92nd Street Y would change their description of the show before they sell the rest of those tickets, so people know what they're actually going to be getting, even if they do have a "Programs, venues, instructors/moderators are subject to change or cancellation without notice" disclaimer. Has motherhood changed your music? It's changed everything. My 4-year-old daughter says things to me that we as adults would think, "Ooh, it's not a good time to tell someone that." Sometimes she'll say, "You look horrible." Before you go out and do a photo shoot, that's not necessarily what you want to hear. What are you shy about? Giving specifics about my songs. My husband doesn't know what my songs are about--even when they're about him. He's very British in that way. He doesn't ask, and he doesn't want to be told. You covered a bunch of male artists' songs from a female perspective. Did you ever hear from any of them? Slayer sent T shirts to the crew. They said something completely and totally tasteless, and that's why we love them. Did Eminem mind your singing as if you were his murdered wife? I don't talk about that. We have the same lawyer. Does aging in the music industry scare you? In my 30s it did. If you can hang around till you're 41 and not frighten people when you walk in the room, you're O.K.
