A very interesting thread! I'm a Cancer (water) and my favourite album is Choirgirl but, more interestingly, both my favourite song and video are 'Spark' and the water connection there is fairly huge. Cheers ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2005 23:44:18 -0500 (EST) From: songchicky Subject: Re: The Beekeeper - My faith restored. hmmm, well i'd planned not to elaborate anymore on this topic, but since my li'l comment seems to have caused such an outpouring of opinions - which i think is great - i'll say as clearly as i can what my final thoughts about this are. someone mentioned (sorry, can't remember who) that some of her friends who are learned musicians think that Pele is tori's best work. my experience is absolutely the opposite! i mentioned this discussion to some of my artist friends - some classical, some jazz, some pop musicians - who are also TA fans, and all but one of them said that they liked all of the CDs with the exception of BFP and SLG. the reasons differed, but basically they all felt that the mystical element that made them sit up and take notice as songwriters and musicians when they first heard tori was missing on Pele. (on a side note, all of them named either LE or Choirgirl as her best.) after reading some the wonderful posts earlier in the week i listened to BFP last night, with an open mind and a willing spirit. at the end of my listen, i came to a conclusion. i don't like Boys For Pele. as an album in its entirety, i find it incohesive, meandering and - and this is just my opinion - it's melodically weaker than her other records. speaking from a vocalist's perspective, it's not nearly as enjoyable to sing. i love tori's lyrics and have always appreciated her symbolism and her subtext, but i simply find a large portion of Pele to be stream-of-consciousness to the extreme. i can't be moved by something that to my ears is utterly nonsensical. i don't think it's a coincidence that tori, as someone said here, suggested listening to the record with a bottle of wine... because she probably figured that if you were totally sober you'll be like "what the hell????" as i said previously, there are songs on the record that i do appreciate. there are 4 that i like and 5 others that i love (one being Way Down which is far too short.) so that's 9 out of 18, which means that 50% of the record i could live without. that's why i said that i think it could have benefited greatly from editing. it would have been a lot nicer to like 9 out of 12. i know that the album is supposed to be dark, and a journey, but to me it's one with entirely too many off-ramps that don't make me want to get back on. as for the darkness, LE is quite dark and to me it succeeds on every level. as a journey it does the same, and despite the complexity and abstraction of the lyrics, i always feel like each and every word truly means something and contributes to the literally potency of the tune. there are songs on Pele that just sound to me like they were written after a few too many joints, not only in terms of their lyrics but also their melody lines. whew! so that's how i feel. how one interprets an album is such a personal thing, and i don't expect everyone to agree with me. as a fledgling artist myself i know that there will be people who like none of my records, some who will like all and some who will like some more than others. and people's opinions will differ greatly, which is part of the wonder and power of art. Little Earthquakes introduced me to tori and I fell in love. Pele doesn't work for me; Choirgirl is masterful. but my opinion is only my own. it's a beautiful thing that each of us on this list has found something in tori's repertoire that moves us, inspires us or comforts us. different personal picks make for interesting and spirited debates. but when i'm in a concert venue just before a tori concert, i never wonder who likes the albums or songs that i don't. i just think to myself how amazing it is to be in room of tori fans, 'cuz to me, that's a pretty kool bond despite our varying favourites. yikes, that was long. =) peace&love, tanisha ===== tanishataitt.ca Debut album Overflow available now. ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Feb 2005 13:09:45 +0000 From: "Pete Lambert" Subject: horoscopes, all the way to china I've got such a deadline looming at work. Hoorah for an excuse to do some ridiculous research on the web instead. However, someone needs to tell the Chinese their horoscope system is wrong (although the BFP animal is apposite!). It does, i suppose, show though just how strong the individual characters of the albums are though, looking at each of the words attributed (by the oracle of spirituality known as the MSN zodiac zone) I feel an immediate "yes/no" reaction as to whether it suits the album. I am an earth sign and LE is my favorite. However, I have no water in my chart at all and Choirgirl is my second favorite. Also, how do we decide which element goes with which album? I think Scarlet is the earthiest, and--despite the fire imagery--Pele seems pretty watery, being mostly about emotion and the subconcious journey. Pele, in fact, might be a Scorpio, as Scorpio is related to deep feelings, resurrection, and things that are hidden. I think you could make a case for any element ruling any of her albums (although, you'd have to work pretty hard to convince Choirgirl is ruled by air). cheers, Tom M. Yeah, I know it's not Tori related, but I just wanted to share. I know a lot of people on this list like her as well. Ani was divine and very, very funny. She discussed the President, or as she put it "The P Word", Howard Dean, and our lives as we know it in W's second term. Anyway, thanks for listening... I dunno. Maybe some of you do. Ok, just for the hell of it, here're mine. (I've been listening since the day I saw her first video on MTV in 1992, "Silent All These Years." Those were the days they played music, GOOD music, on MTV.) This list, of course, does not contain Beekeeper. I have purposely not listened to a single song yet over the internet because I never like the quality and I want to have the CD in my hot little hands first. hehe 1. Little Earthquakes 2. Scarlet's Walk 3. Boys for Pele 4. From the Choirgirl Hotel 5. Under the Pink 6. To Venus and Back 7. Strange Little Girls 8. Tales of a Librarian So, hi, all you guys. I haven't posted to this thing in quite a long while. Remember me? I used to have the email knoxtorifan@yahoo.com. I'm Jennifer from Knoxville, TN. Well, what have I been up to lately? Divorced the French hubby (he was having numerous affairs, I found out). Went back to my maiden name, Mitts. (I was Cypres, remember?) I moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia, last summer. I have remarried but am keeping the maiden name because I'm really tired of changing it. He's an American. Named Scott. A professional writer and poet. (Very cool, eh?) I'm still teaching high school English. I hope to make it to the Orlando show. I'm only 3 hours from Orlando. Oh, and I never did do this, but a long time ago I had the idea that I would take all of the Tori songs that never made it onto a studio album and make burn CD's of the best recordings of them. (You know, like, there are several recordings of Famous Blue Raincoat, but I like one more than the others.) This is still my goal, my dream. Wouldn't that be the greatest thing to have? Or has someone already done this? Well, if you have any input or insight into this project, I need someone to kick me in the butt so that I'll finally just do it. I know everybody would love something like this that would be a great companion to the studio albums. Something, ya know, comprehensive. I also wonder how I can get my hands on all of her unreleased videos. I mean, I've never seen the 1,000 Oceans video, or any that aren't on the DVDs/videos that the studios have released. These are things I'd like. Probably you, too. Okay, toodles! - -jen Keep up with my daily life at http://jennifermitts.blogspot.com! Do you have an Amazon.com Wish List? If so, please let me know. LOL. well along that line, complicate it further elementally and factor in that for many esoteric systems there are 5 elements, and as many as 8. that's not even touching on directions =) it at least gives more of the girls somewhere to uniquely go... - -- ~ kelley Soul Intent Arts http://www.soulintentarts.com ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ The Saferoom Project http://www.saferoom.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Feb 2005 15:20:29 -0500 From: "Lisa Zwick" Subject: Re: album preferences Here's my list. Although it's hard for me to really make a list like this, b/c I usually just have all her music together and listen to just the songs I like. With the exeption of Scarlet's Walk, most of her albums have tracks which I love and tracks I simply can't stand. SW is perhaps the only one I listen to straight through without skipping anything. And while people will probably think I'm insane for listing Venus so high up on the list, it also gets more airtime for me b/c there's less songs on it that I don't like, compared with the others. And many of my favorite songs are from singles rather than the albums.... To tell the truth, I never even played my Tales of a Librarian cd once. I sort of forgot I even had it. I also haven't heard the beekeeper yet, so I'm not listing either of them. 1.Scarlet's Walk 2. From the Choirgirl Hotel 3. Little Earthquakes 4. To Venus and Back 5. Under the Pink 6.
