(on a side note, putting the damage on is also my favorite Tori song, followed by here. in my head) The first time I saw her live was 1996 in Seattle at the Dew Drop Inn tour (BFP album). That concert was a spiritual experience for me. I sobbed during almost the entire show. After the concert I couldn't stop crying either. It was probably one of THE most intense feelings I've experienced in my 33 years. Like others have said, Pele took a LONG time to grow on me too. It's definitely a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. Everything on the album was done so purposefully (and well done at that). It's layers upon layers and definitely tells of a journey...I guess that's why it appeals to me so much. The other reason it appeals to me is its darkness and musical content. It's a gourgeous piece of music when taken in as a whole...like a symphony, with different movements. Oddly, the most-often mentioned songs on the album are actually my least favorite (like Talula, CALS). Isn't that weird? I can listen to putting the damage on, little amsterdam, beauty queen/horses, doughnut song, muhammad my friend, way down and twinkle over and over..and over again! Tony What's more likely? That an all-powerful mysterious god created the universe and then decided not to give any proof of his existence? Or, that he simply doesn't exist at all? And that we created him so that we wouldn't have to feel so small and alone. -Eleanor Arroway, Contact ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Feb 2005 16:26:33 +0000 From: "Pete Lambert" Subject: RE: My Favorite Albums in Order... >Subject: My Favorite Albums in Order... I was about to suggest the same idea. LE was my first so it has to come top, I think though 92-93 it accounted for about 90% of the music listening I did (though seems to be taking an extended sabbatical the past few years) Little Earthquakes Boys for Pele Choirgirl Hotel Strange Little Girls Under the Pink Scarlets Walk Venus & Back Feel guilty putting anything last, though I think they're all still in my Top 10 albums by anyone, now I think about it, which is impressive. I'd say the albums I like most tend have the strongest overall themes, be darker, 'spikier' perhaps, and be very different to the album that preceeded them. The bottom 3 are all, to deploy a useful cliche, somehow 'less than the sum of their parts' to me. There are many brilliant tracks on Scarlet, but I think it has the least variety of instrumentation and tempo of any of her albums - which I suppose is natural following on from the wild extremes of SLG. I love a lot of the songs on Scarlet but remember thinking, when I read Tori saying that this album was a banquet, the songs cooked symultaneously, that she seemed to have used very similar ingredients for each course. Like, Taxi Ride. I LOVE that song. But by that stage in the album I was kind of whispering, "go on, put your FOOT down, woman!"... but at the same time I know languid was kind of the point, so I'll maybe not start telling her how to write songs :o) But I didnt really start to get several of the songs on Scarlet until I heard the solo piano versions from radio shows, they seemed so much more lively and precise. So guess who's preying that the 05 solo tour makes it over to the UK before the band joins in (and that it stays here once they do, of course!) I'm a Virgo (earth sign) and my favourite album *is* Little Earthquakes. What peaked my interest in Tori was the cover of the Crucify single and her elaborate, "earthy" neckline. I was browsing cds around 12-13 yrs old, saw that cover and thought, "Cool!" I'm one of those fans who never yawns hearing Silent or Winter live. If thinking in terms of "earth," I really appreciate Tori's "roots" as her music has never ceased to stop "growing." It is particularly interesting to me that this new album has the "Garden" concept going on! So fitting! Does anyone know what element The Beekeeper is related to? I truly love this record as much as Little Earthquakes. Tori and Trent ofcourse worked together on Under The Pink for the song Past The Mission. It is rumored that they had a relationship that ended abruptly due to Courtney Love's unruley intervention. But, Tori does not talk about her relationships with the men in her life, except for Husband, but rarely even then. When concerning Maynard, they seem to be just friends. I know she became interested in Tool's music during the Aenmia days. And as I recall, Tori went to a concert of theirs and then went backstage. And I also heard that Maynard was a fan of Boys For Pele (I think these two albums are from the same era). Then in 1997, they did the famous duet at her New York Benefit show.
