The bloke did not cover his little 'red > light' up well enough. Ramble alert! In '98 I brought a red LED flashlight with me on the tour to help me take notes during concerts without shining too much light around. I kept getting a lot of attention from local security everywhere, and even when I showed them what it was they would make me turn it off. In Madison Square Garden Steve Sanchez came over to where I was and asked me if I was taping the show, and asked to see inside my opera glasses case. I showed him my opera glasses inside of it and was confused why he'd asked me to do that. It wasn't until a few shows later that I made the connection between the LED flashlight and Sanchez suspecting me of taping, and I told him I'd figured out why he previously thought I'd been taping and showed him the thing one evening on my way inside. I continued to have problems with local security, though. The irony was that I also had a regular white flashlight on me, but I was trying to be considerate! On later tours I put a piece of black leather over the front of my flashlight into which I'd cut a tiny opening so only a small amount of light was coming out, but it was enough that I could see to write if I held it next to the notebook as I wrote. One time as I was about to be searched I realized that I'd not left my disposable camera in the car. This place made us empty our pockets, too. I had a thick fiberfill coat on and the camera didn't bulge out and I got in with it. Very nerve-making, though. I've definitely heard of people who were caught recording Tori concerts having their media confiscated. I think there's great value in the concert recordings and I'll take copies of them if I can get them, but I can't imagine making any. I get antsy just taping educational seminars with a microcassette recorder when I'm not supposed to. It's goofy to me thinking that a show wasn't recorded, though. By the next tour after this one live video feeds over the internet may be common. Half of everyone now has cameras in their phones and a lot of them make video clips, if only short ones. Are they not gonna allow people to bring their phones in? I think the technology has outstripped the security. It's harder than ever to catch in the act most of those who are recording. Artists need to release boots that were done well to compete with all the audience recordings, as they so often release extra-value packaging to counter the trading of album MP3s. I'm cheeky enough that at the end of the DDI Tour I gave Tori a letter saying she should release her own concert recordings to at least give the better concerts more limelight and get some of the profits, and I suggested six specific concerts and said why I thought each deserved to be released. She's a hard-headed one. So it goes. Some artists these days allow people to buy a recording of the concert on their way out. Maybe Tori will come to her senses and do this. I won't be holding my breath.
