Wah! There are now two less references in the "unfathamable" box in my brain. I *really* should've thought of St John's biblical significance, damn the Church of England for not bothering to oppress anyone properly these days, I'm missing out on all sorts of metaphors, probably. I'd always wondered if St John was referring to its use a as posh forename (pronounced "Sinj-on"); or whether Sister Ernestine was a sister of Sister Janet (linking back to Marianne's suffering at their hands?; I think whatever tori thinks she can "try that once again" at the end of 'Sister Janet' is whatever helped her find so much of the imagery of BFP, perhaps?), but I think your two suggestions have a much better ring to them. Off for a serious BFP listen now...
