I thought the line was saying most men, boys, don't deal with emotion well, and don't often cry, and a lot of men smoke to deal stress and whatnot. For example, my boyfriend had stopped smoking for about six months, and then we had this huge fight, and during the fight, all he could think was, man, I want a smoke, and decided that he wanted to smoke again. Most men don't cry openly, so they find other ways to deal with emotion, such as smoking.
