I think she's come to more focus her vision of an album before she records tracks, resulting in fewer recorded "extra" tracks at the end of each project. Surely, too, without releasing pressed CD singles nearly as often these days, there are not the same outlets for b-sides as there had been. And maybe there *are* a few oddball items similar to 1996's Samurai or Amazing Grace/Til the Chicken sitting on the shelves of her archives, but there isn't an obvious menu of singles onto which to attach them. And, for that matter, there are more tracks per album these days. Granted, the total song count for the LE era is 27 (12 album tracks and 15 bee-sides [1]). But SW has a pretty respectable song count of 23 (18 album tracks and 5 bee-sides [2]). I wonder what LE would look like if it were released now. Would it have, say, 20 tracks, but only one or two additional singles (each with a maximum of five total songs)? What would the track list for the album and the singles look like, what would the singles be? Hmmmm. That's an interesting exercise for the reader. I'd definitely make 'Take to the Sky', 'Sugar', and 'Flying Dutchman' album tracks. /nm [1] For the purposes of this discussion, I am counting new bee-sides only. I am not counting edits of album songs, live bee-sides of previously-released songs, or songs on soundtracks and compilation albums. I did count 'Thoughts' as a bee-side, although I think that's kinda questionable, given that it's really just her needling on the piano trying to get 'Girl' right. [2] That's counting the four songs released to the web as bee-sides, and is not counting the songs on the upcoming CD/DVD, 'cause I'm not sure exactly how to count those. :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 2004 18:43:51 +0000 From: "Daniel Bhalla" Subject: Operation Peter Pan Does anyone know if "Operation Peter Pan" will be appearing anywhere? This is another SW b-side. I've heard a lot of people mention about "Mountain" being missing, but not OPP, so was wondering if it's going to be on the CD? - -Dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 2004 11:25:24 -0800 (PST) From: "Nadyne Mielke" Subject: Re: Operation Peter Pan Daniel Bhalla said: > Does anyone know if "Operation Peter Pan" will be appearing > anywhere? What an interesting thought! I probably woulda swapped out Phantom being on the album for Mary--in my current mood, anyway. This doesn't address the idea of its being allowed a longer run time as suggested, though. I do see how some of the LE-era b-sides, especially the ones Nadyne mentioned, were bright stars in their own right and, as with some of the later material, were likely cast in higher relief as a result of not being included on an album. It's impossible to go back to the mindset of the days before LE knowing all I know now, as it surely is for most folks here. Tori has many times second-guessed taking Honey off Under the Pink, but there's never any way to know for sure what twists of reality that might have created. It's provocative to consider such things, though, and that's okay by me.
