I feel like, and probably am, a complete idiot because I just spent an hour writing an RSS feed proxy for the Dent only to discover that there already IS an RSS feed on the Dent. D'oh! I looked around before I started coding, I swear, via Google and on the site but I didn't find traces of one. And there's no happy RSS or XML link on, say, the ToriNews page. (Unless idiocy blinded me to that as well.) After I was done and was writing a little beta test announcement, I took one last look and found the real feed. Am I the last to know? I'm choosing to look at this as a learning exercise. I've learned: 1) that I'm an idiot, 2) that the Dent has a feed, and finally 3) how to write an RSS proxy in PHP. They are, in order: "no fun", "fun", and "actually, if marginally, useful". To make this train wreck somewhat worthwhile (by figuratively toasting marshmallows in the flaming wreckage), if anyone wants to share in the knowledge (with an eye toward, say, writing an RSS proxy for some other remote site without a feed), the source is here: http://www.thunderwishes.com/dentrss/viewsource.php and the proxy is here: http://www.thunderwishes.com/dentrss/ I wouldn't rely on the proxy. It works fine (I've tested it in NetNewsWire and bloglines), but since it's redundant it may go away without warning eventually. If you don't know what RSS is but you're now curious, go here: http://www.darwinmag.com/learn/curve/column.html?ArticleID=1014 I'll shut up now. - -bt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 10:39:04 -0500 From: fingerpuppets Subject: attention: aol folks -- how to unsubscribe i've noticed more than a few aol subscribers reporting mail from precious-things as spam lately so i figured it's a good time to remind everyone how to unsubscribe from the list if you no longer want to receive any mail from it. just send a note to majordomo@smoe.org which says unsubscribe precious-things or, if you get the digest, unsubscribe precious-things-digest if you have any problems, forward the response majordomo sends you to owner-precious-things@smoe.org and mike or i will help you out. woj ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 12:04:33 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Whitehead Subject: Re: The Dent's RSS feed, Brian is an idiot Hello! Yes, the Dent has an RSS feed. I have not really advertised it much yet because it has some limitations. But it is there. You can also subscribe to The Dent feed through LiveJournal as well. But if you get your Dent fix that way, you must be aware that it is only updated once an hour, is sometimes quirky and unreliable, and there are times when you will not see all the news. For instance if I publish a new story, then it appears on the feed. But if I later update the story, it does not appear again the the LiveJournal feed.... So it is not perfect and should not be a complete replacement for checking The Dent in person. But you can use the feed as long as you aware that it has limitations and you may not get all the news perfectly. You can subscribe to thedent through LiveJournal or catch the RSS feed at this URL: http://thedent.com/index.xml I may formally announce it later, but people are free to use it now if they like. But you should still check The Dent on ocassion just in case! Mikewhy On Sun, 14 Mar 2004, Brian K Tanaka wrote: > > Is it widely known that the Dent has an RSS feed? This is from the the updates section of the website http://www.yessaid.com/new.html: Monday, March 15, 2004 Due to financial issues, Toriphoria may not exist after this month. I've put up a PayPal "donate" link for anyone who'd like to donate money to help keep the site online. Hopefully, enough money will be raised to keep yessaid.com active forever, and I will continue to update as usual. Thanks for any support. So, I hope those that are able to, might make a monetary contribution (no matter how small) to help keep this treasure of a website going. You can follow the link on the page above to pay with paypal.
