This is the joint between your lower jaw and the temporal bone of your skull. When you say someone has TMJ, you are saying they have somthing wrong with that joint, usually from grinding teeth, but there are a number of other causes. Injury to this joint is very painful. Massage is frequently helpful in relaxing the muscle and relieving the pain, at least temporarily. In the case of a jaw defect (like Tori's), any treatment other than radical surgery will most likely not cure the problem permanently. Just my .02. Tom M. TMJ is the joint where your jaw attaches to your skull. The jaw bone is called the mandible and the the skull bone it attaches to is the temporal bone. It can cause pain and stiffness of the jaw and in extreme cases causes the jaw to lock. i have TMD. Everyone has TMJ cuz as you said that is just the joint. TMJ is the archaic term for the disorder. I can only imagine what Tori deals with and hope that what she does deal with isn't anywhere as painful as what I deal with. :P and speaking of that.. when she was the cover issue of Rolling Stone, she talked to the interviewer about her defect and mentioned something about ice packs after performances and "tiger-balming" before performances...... so... what exactly is this tiger balm stuff? I want some! Sincerely, Cyndi S.
