The tracks from the iTunes Music Store aren't MP3s, but rather AAC. AAC is the next generation of MP3. The compression algorithm results in smaller and better-sounding files. That said, you're right, the quality just isn't the same as a CD played on a good stereo. I've had the opportunity to hear 'Sugar' (the original from the 'China' single) and 'Putting the Damage On' on a $35k (!) stereo system. The differences between that and my cheap little stereo at home are staggering, let alone between that and the MP3 that's hanging out on my iPod. >i hope it becomes available elsewhere b/c of this. like the SW bsides were >mostly on scarlet's web, not great sounding... Scarlet's Web wasn't MP3, either. It was streaming audio, which is usually at an utterly horrible compression rate -- even worse than bad MP3s. I wouldn't mind seeing the Scarlet's Walk bee-sides show up on iTunes. Mac users couldn't access them on the website (it was Windows-only), and the quality will be better. It still won't be CD quality, but it will be better than streaming audio. I'd rather have a CD, but it's better than nothing. Speaking of iTunes ... I find it rather amusing that they have both 'Scarlet's Walk' and 'Scarlet's Walk (limited edition)' listed. They don't have any of the content from the ltd ed (which makes sense), so the practical upshot is that they have all of the songs from SW listed twice. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Nov 2003 03:22:50 -0500 From: "yes said" Subject: clips of a Librarian You can now hear 30-second clips of ALL the songs on Tales of a Librarian, thanks to Circuit City's web site. And it appears the version of Professional Widow on the album is in fact the dance remix. Very bizarre.
