He also recorded and mixed the album. Naylor is a Bay Area jazz vocalist who has three album-length releases: "Jacqui Naylor", "Live at the Plush Room", and the aforementioned "Shelter". Of the three I favor the first album, perhaps because of its more traditional approach. But, that said, "Shelter" has a number of tracks that are growing on me over time, and the musicianship, bolstered largely by misterjonevansonbass and pianist Art Khu, is arguably stronger here than on her first release. All-in-all an intriguing new(-ish) artist. I would be remiss if I didn't also mention that her voice is simply lovely. Or, as "L.A. Jazz Scene" would have it: "precise, languorous and very sexy." The curious should note that finding the self-titled first album and the live album in brick & mortar outlets seems a bit tricky, but it's possible to find them online. Amazon, for instance, carries all three. - -- - - Brian Tanaka - ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V8 #242 *************************************
