I've exercised self-restraint and I'm not flying to Boston tomorrow (well, today actually) for Mixfest. Given that, I would very much like to see a review or two of Tori's set here on PT. That was always what I interpreted it as...even though this person keeps hurting her (damaging her) over and over again she is still in love with them. Tori fan for 8 years, this is still one of my favorites..."I've got a ticket to your late show...".....beautiful. Lauren ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 11:11:26 -0700 From: Brian K Tanaka Subject: Four is not the point of her Tori is too much her own person for the world at large to comprehend. We've known this all along and, yes, I'm stating the obvious, but the impending release of the Librarian CD/DVD is raising the issue yet again. Despite it happening all the time, pretty much consistently across her career, it's still annoying to watch the world (the non-Toriphile world, that is) react with such reflexive inappropriateness to the things she does. Will people ever learn? Face it. When Tori puts two and two together it never equals four; it might equal paisley or kitten or you. But four? Never. Four is not the point of her. If you want to know what 2 plus 2 equals, get a calculator. If you want to be reminded "that [you're] more than just this functional being that makes money, eats and shits and comes", turn to Tori. I guess it's too much to ask. She's a singer/songwriter so she *must* draw within the lines of that particular coloring book page, right? No? Well, you would think so judging by the behavior of music journalists. Take the Librarian release for example. Here's four examples of what articles call the new collection: http://www.rollingstone.com -- "best-of collection" http://www.aversion.com -- "best of" http://www.livedaily.com -- "best of compilation" http://soundgenerator.com -- "greatest hits set" "It's songs from across her career, therefore it's a greatest hits or best-of collection" or so goes the logic. And that logic might obtain in anyone else's case, but this is Tori fucking Amos. Stop. Think. Let's look at the original press release, shall we? Number of times the phrase "greatest hits" is used: 0. Number of times the phrase "best of" is used: 0. Understanding that Tori really means it when she says it's (and get ready because--oooh scary--it's different) "a musical autobiography": priceless. It's described in the press release as "a first-ever compilation", a "collection", a CD that "document[s] a career", "[a collection of] some of her most beloved songs", "a unique personal narrative and a breathtaking view of an extraordinary body of work", and, of course, in Tori's own words as mentioned above, "a musical autobiography". No "best of". No "greatest hits". So why do these phrases keep popping up in most articles? (OK. I know why. I'm just irritated and sometimes hypothetical questions make me feel better.) It's sorta like walking up to someone and saying, "How are you?" If you assume they're going to say "Fine", then you might miss it altogether when they actually say, "If you could be anywhere in the world for the next 25 minutes, where would it be?" or "I love you" or somesuch, and what a shame that would be. So, the CD and DVD will come out and we'll all be contentedly puzzling over the intricacies, assorted delights, and scary forest paths of the musical autobiography while the rest of the world either ignores it or puts it on to hear that cool "hit" Cornflake Girl. That's OK. To each his or her own. Who knows? Maybe this time Tori really did mean four. But I don't think so. I'm going with kitten. Or you. - -- - - Brian Tanaka - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 11:38:02 -0700 From: Brian K Tanaka Subject: Re: Mixfest Reviews On Fri, Oct 03, 2003 at 09:27:02AM -0400, fingerpuppets boldly wrote: > > yeah, me too. i'm not going to be able to go after all (damn pesky job) > and i know i'll be kicking myself for missing it and all...but i sure Drat.
