Out of all the concerts I went to, there was only one I felt the way you just described. It was at the Key Arena in Seattle for the Choirgirl tour. I was sitting very far away and I did not enjoy myself at all. Not that I didn't enoy seeing Tori, but I knew how I COULD have felt if I had been closer. I know exactly what you mean. But I really have no problem with a completely pre-staged performance, like say, MTV Unplugged or something. It all depends on what you expect to get from her and what turns you on. I think that, in the case of the DVD, Tori *really* wants to focus on perfection on a sonic level. We are getting 5.1 sound performances, which I think, from the point of view of someone like Mark Hawley (her husband), makes it imperative to deliver a good product, sound-wise. I don't know, that's my guess.. I am not saying Tori doesn't produce a certain magic onstage, God forbid I'd ever be so foolish. No. But I think that for a product so widely-available like her GH CD, she really wants it to look good and sound good (DVD-good! without the screaming and the yelling and such). I've seen Tori raw on video and it's awesome... but I kinda enjoy her more polished performances. >Aside from that, she played 3 songs for a soundcheck that she had >barely played on the entire 2002/3 tour... and then didn't play them >in the actual show for the last show of the tour, which a lot of >people were expecting to be more than a generic "tori plays the hits >for the DVD" show. I just want to say one thing to this comment. Be reminded that this DVD is going to be sold with her GREATEST HITS CD. With that in mind, it makes perfect sense for her to deliver a "generic, Tori-plays-the-hits show" for the DVD taping. Aside from that, she's not really giving us the hits on DVD, she's giving us three songs she rarely performed on her tour and, thus, probably wanted them to sound excellent. *That's* a treat! >Because a soundcheck is not a concert. There's no energy, there's no >vibe, there's only the cold empty seats and the cool practiced >demeanor and the knowing that "If I screw it up, I can just re-do it >and nobody will care" thing going on. A polished, well-performed >song is nothing compared to a raw, energetic and completely >enthralling performance in the heat of things. That's what separates your point of view from mine. We'd have to ask Tori what she based her decision on (assuming that she was the one deciding!). Besides, didn't she just re-do the songs once? That's what I read on the Dent. I agree that the vibe is gone, and that's a shame... but still, that doesn't take much of the excitement away, for me anyway. On the other hand, giving us only three songs from a 20-song concert could also seem kinda choppy to some. I bet she'll be releasing a whole DVD concert eventually and this bonus DVD is just a special preview of good/better things to come. I'm sure she's aware that she kinda owes us a couple o' DVDs! Hehe. *special message to Tori/Atlantic*: please release the updated video collection on DVD! We've been waiting for it for a couple of years already. >To me, there's a reason someone only pays $15 for a CD of polished and >perfect music, but will easily pay $50 (or in some people's cases >nearly all their savings and vacation time!) to see a live performance >of Tori. And we're not getting that, we're getting the polish. Exactly. I totally agree with you. That's why you're getting an absolutely perfectly-conceived CD/DVD combo for $15... if you want a perfect concert, you go see her live and pay $50 for that. I know we could be getting a DVD concert too and that'd please you and us all... but I'm sure there is a good reason that she's giving us this and not that. We should just wait. At any rate, I don't think you can reproduce a concert on video. I have all of Tori's officially-released videos, and they certainly don't make up for going to the actual concert. I'd pay over $150 gladly to go see her live, if she were ever in my whereabouts. But alas, she's not! > >But I'm sure everyone will be thrilled with the end result, as most >people probably don't really care in the end and are happy with >whatever they get. I didn't even remember that was from a soundcheck! It certainly sounded from a concert for me. The whole "Live CD" concept is artificial anyway... in the sense I indicated before, i.e. it's a "put on" affair, packaged and then sold... it's certainly NOT a concert. >IMHO, the live album of TVAB misses the point of being a live album. >The live album shows us how she changed the songs, remaking older ones >to work in a band environment. But I think this time we're going to have to make-do. We're all into different things and she can't possibly please everyone all the time. The two-disc, CD/DVD collection - which Amos describes as a musical "autobiography" - was produced by Amos and includes songs chosen by the multiple Grammy Award-nominated artist from her Atlantic career. The set is slated to arrive in stores on November 18th. The "TALES OF A LIBRARIAN" audio CD features 20 songs that document a career spanning over a decade, among them "Precious Things," "Playboy Mommy," "Spark," "God," "Cornflake Girl," "Baker Baker," "Winter," "Tear In Your Hand," and of course, "Silent All These Years." Amos has personally revisited and "reconditioned" the original material, retooling the multi-track recordings to offer a new perspective on some of her most beloved songs. In addition, "TALES OF A LIBRARIAN" will include a pair of brand-new songs - - "Angels" and "Snow Cherries From France" - as well as newly recorded renditions of two ultra-rare B-sides - "Mary" (originally found on the European "Crucify" CD single) and "Sweet Dreams" (from 1992's limited edition "Winter" CD). As sequenced by Amos, the songs - which Amos has always considered to be her children - form a unique personal narrative and a breathtaking view of an extraordinary body of work. The bonus DVD features songs recorded live earlier this month during sound check of the final show of Amos' summer 2003 North American tour. Performances include "Pretty Good Year," "Northern Lad," and "Honey." The DVD also includes audio remixes of "Putting the Damage On" and "Mr. Zebra" - - from the album "BOYS FOR PELE" - which, like the three live performance tracks, were specially mixed for the DVD in surround sound. Accompanying the two audio tracks are images that visually chronicle Amos' career. Unquestionably one of the most acclaimed and influential artists of the modern era, Tori Amos first captured the world's attention in 1992 with her classic solo debut, the RIAA double-platinum certified "LITTLE EARTHQUAKES." Each consecutive Atlantic Records collection of original Amos material that followed has been certified platinum or better by the RIAA - "UNDER THE PINK" (1994), "BOYS FOR PELE" (1996), "FROM THE CHOIRGIRL HOTEL" (1998), and "TO VENUS AND BACK" (1999). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2003 17:08:24 -0400 From: ein kleines kinnemuzik Subject: Re: atlantic records _tales of a librarian_ press release the press release is now up on businesswire too: http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/index.jsp?epi-content=GENERIC&newsId=20030926005357&headlineSearchConfigBO=1064574000000%201064635565000%20%20groupByDate%20%201%209999%20200660400000%20tori%2Bamos%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20false%20false%20&newsLang=en&beanID=202776713&viewID=news_view blame them for the ugly url! ;) if your mailer mangles it, try this: http://tinyurl.com/ot7j woj ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2003 17:28:27 -0400 From: cyndi.crawford@juno.com Subject: Me And A Gun when is the last time Tori sang Me And A Gun?
