Not that I'll complain about more shows, but I was hoping that with this being the possibly last tour for at least 2 years... things would switch up at least slightly more than adding precious things every show instead of iieee and/or spring haze. Same opener, same opening set variations, same length of roadside cafe songs, same ending to the main set... not what I expected. Yes, I'll freak out if I get to go to one of the shows where she whips out an entirely new song, but I was hoping for maybe 4 or 5 solo songs and at the very least a new opener and a new ending. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 05:32:45 -0700 (PDT) From: e m Subject: Re: 3rd leg / new tour bummed-out-ness no you are not the only one... i totally expected her to change it up a bit, ESPECIALLY since she changed the name of the tour. I just think back to 5.5 tour and how when that was done she changed the name and played solo piano and changed it up a bit from the 5.5 tour. the only thing i can think of is that she is really enjoying this formula of starting out with WP/SFT and the threads and all. this tour the way she toured i think is far more in touch with her native american roots then any other tour, and maybe she's really getting off on it and doesn't want to stop. i dunno. But, I would hope that she wouldn't continue having her setlists SW heavy. I've been keeping track and each night she plays the most songs from SW. only the first night she played as many LE era songs as SW songs... I think this album means a lot to her, notably, because of the message it carries and the level of work she employed to create it. She's quite proud of it. I expect she gets a great deal of personal satisfaction out of performing concerts which have a strong Scarlet focus. Her security guy Joel will tell you this is her job. She clearly takes meeting all of her touring commitments with a high degree of seriousness, but it's more to her than simply that; I am convinced of this. For whatever personal reasons, she is driven to genuinely express herself. The songs hold great meaning for her individually as well as when she performs them collectively in concert. Someone recently told me about reading comments from some who thought that the way she's stated she puts together her nightly set lists based on the day's goings-on is just a story she tells people. I'm the *last* person to believe strictly every single word that comes out of her mouth, but she really *does* work this way. Sure, the plan for each concert begins with an armature for her to sculpt around, but each song she performs on any given night was put there at that spot for a reason that made sense to her on that day. When Sinatra was celebrating fifty years in show business I remember radio host, music writer and Sinatraphile Jonathan Schwartz talking about it on television. He suggested we think back to all the special times we'd had with the songs, to all the personal associations we'd formed with them and the memories we had around them. Then Schwartz asked us to imagine what the songs meant to Sinatra himself. He *lived* with that music much more than any of us can grasp. So it is with Tori Amos and her material. She may have been sick to death of having to perform some of the older songs a few tours back, but she hung in there with them and they made their peace, and now what some of the older songs used to mean to her has become tailored to her new feelings and sensibilities about them. For me, it's been boundlessly fascinating to watch. This tour is still promoting the Scarlet's Walk album. She went on a hiatus before coming back for this leg, but it still has the same basic function at its root. Frankly, I was not expecting any major changes in it despite the name of it needing to be changed to reflect the addition of Ben Folds. All of this makes sense to me. *My* only surprise is that they seem to be about as long as they were on the first legs. I'm impressed by that. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. Music is a higher revelation than philosophy. --Ludwig van Beethoven ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 17:31:08 -0700 From: "Ryan" Subject: two extra tickets-sat, aug 02, 2003 (san diego, ca) hi, i have two extra very decent seats available for sat aug 02, 2003 at open air theatre (san diego). section: dd row: f seats: 87, 89 i'm asking the price that i originally paid for the tickets- $120. email me if interested. ryan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 21:14:36 -0400 From: David Mobley Subject: Re[2]: 3rd leg / new tour bummed-out-ness Actually, I believe the impetus behind this tour is the "Best of" album, rather than Scarlet's Walk, hence the repetition of cities and name change. At least that was what I was expecting, with the whole rehearsals for new songs and un-heard songs hype that we've been given through whatever unofficial channels it may be. With a Best Of cd coming out in November and it being assumed that Tori won't be touring directly at the same time of its release (although I guess plans can change eh?) I was figuring that with all the cities being repeats, this was the Best of tour, not merely an extension of the Scarlet tour. I was expecting a complete overhaul on this section, and at the very least more than the standard new closing song change. Not that I'll mind seeing I Can't See New York for the 15th time this year... but you know, it would have been nice to see a whole new touring experience if this is going to be her last hurrah for a couple years, if not longer. However, I'll be thrilled to death if I can manage to get a Professional Widow show and happen to hear one of the unreleased songs at one of the shows I'm seeing.
