[Cyndi S Crawford Subject: dallas star-telegram concert review Posted on Thu, Apr. 24, 2003 Amos' changing set has lovely surprises By Mark Lowry Star-Telegram Staff Writer GRAND PRAIRIE -There's an important rule to remember when planning to see Tori Amos in concert: She never performs identical shows in any two cities on a given tour. So an Internet search for previous set lists won't predict what she's going to do. On the tour for her newest album, the Sept. 11-inspired Scarlet's Walk, she usually opens with Wampum Prayer and A Sorta Fairytale, and closes her main set with the haunting I Can't See New York and Iieee. But the songs in between are anybody's guess. On Wednesday night at NextStage, she drew heavily from her 1992 album Under the Pink, performing Space Dog, God, Cornflake Girl and a lovely arrangement of Bells For Her. On last year's tour, she performed only with her piano. This time, she's using her band again -- bassist John Evans and percussionist Matt Chamberlain. This means that many arrangements are unidentifiable until the lyrics begin, as was the case with a funky performance of Crucify, in which the band played the verses, and she joined on piano for the chorus. Another Amos rule is that she always performs a few unexpected covers. She has been singing Fleetwood Mac's Landslide in concert for more than a decade, but it's still nice to hear. An overly emotional rendition of Dixie Land was simply bizarre, but her version of Harry Belafonte's Abraham, Martin and John was gorgeous. In short, it was like a sorta fairytale. Opening was Dallas' Rhett Miller, best-known as lead singer of alt-country heroes the Old 97's. Furiously strumming his guitar, he clung most to songs from his solo album The Instigator, but included a few 97's songs, including Indefinitely. After eight weeks of touring With Amos, his voice was still in tiptop shape. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 17:20:40 +0100 From: "chris cazzidy" Subject: Where the hell have I been??? Hi Earthlings Just landed from the planet zog and discovered a wonderful artist called Tori Amos (is it pronounced Tory as in a British Conservative?). Before I left I remember Cornflake Girl but for whatever reason I didn't follow my instincts. I'm now in mourning as I've missed 11 yrs (?) of concerts and brooding over her beautiful songs. As you can imagine I'm on something of an Tori overload at the moment trying to collectively take in Pele, Scarlett, and UTP. I've also got Strange Little Girls but not bothered with that much at the moment. Not yet been able to get her other albums but probably will do tomorrow. What I primarily want to know from the insiders on the list are what the chances are of her doing any more shows in England this year - unfortunately I missed the UK shows in March. Current faves, BQ/Horses, Jupiter, Red Baron, Doughnut, Damage On, Scarlett's Walk, New York, Pancake, gold dust. In truth, Pele and Scarlett are simply awesome pieces of work and apart from Bryan Ferry no other artist has affected me like this on an emotional level before. Can anyone recommend any videos or DVDs available in the UK. I also want to get the sheet music for Pele and Scarlett - are these available? Until the next time...... You can get the following on VHS: * Live from NY: Recorded in 1997 after she finished her (extensive) tour supporting _Boys for Pele_, this is a(n almost) [1] complete concert. It gives you an excellent view of what her 1996 concerts were like. This video is possibly most notable because the lead singer of Tool joins her for "Muhammad My Friend". * The Complete Videos: Well, this isn't really complete anymore. It was released in 1998, so has videos for the albums up through _From the Choirgirl Hotel_. It is missing two videos that had been recorded before that: "The Big Picture", from Tori's failed first album _Y Kant Tori Read_, and "Professional Widow", which is a montage of other Tori videos. You can get the following on DVD: * "A Sorta Fairytale" DVD single. It has the video for the song and a short making-of documentary. > I also want to get the sheet music for Pele and Scarlett - are these > available? Books of sheet music are available for each of Tori's solo albums. There are also a few other sheet music books, such as _Singles_ (all of Tori's commercial singles from 1992 through 1998) and _MTV Unplugged_ (sheet music of the songs that aired on that show). According to people who are better at music than I am [2], the quality of the books of sheet music varies greatly. It is often missing the more complex parts of the songs that make it interesting. I understand that the _Scarlet's Walk_ sheet music is better than the rest. HTH. :) /nm [1] It actually isn't complete. It has all of the songs, but it doesn't have all of Tori's between-song chatter. [2] Which, granted, would be nearly everyone. :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 16:03:33 -0400 From: Cyndi S Crawford Subject: Re: Where the hell have I been??? Well, Chris, let me be the first to say, welcome to the Toriphile/Ears-With-Feet community. :) You can find ANY information that you may have missed out on at www.thedent.com. that's where I did all my catching up when I got sucked in last year in February. Definitely feel free to ask any of us any questions you have about Tori. Everybody here helped me, and I'm more than sure that they'll be quite happy to help you as well. :) Sincerely, Cyndi S. Hi AJ, yep it was Q magazine - they did a joint interview with all three of them as the leading female musicials/songwriters of the time (was it about 94/95?), hence the cover-shoot to go with it.
