Not Desperado" because I'm not the biggest fan of that song in general. But then Tori reached through the screen of my tv and bonked me on the head with a little mallet that said along its side: "aren't you the dork that was just babbling about how it doesn't matter what I sing, it's the way I sing it?" and then proceeded to create a deliciously beautiful thing from that (in my opinion) so-so song. That'll show me! All in all, the program was great. I could have done with more songs and less commercials, but what can you do? And if I can make a shallow remark: Tori's face is looking fuller and more rounded again and I for one say, "Hooray!". - -- - - Brian Tanaka - - Thunder Wishes, Fire Thought: http://www.well.com/~btanaka/tori ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2003 00:16:40 -0800 From: Brian K Tanaka Subject: Re: Tori on Oxygen Oh, and I forgot to ask... I saw the first and second NYC shows and >the Camden show in November. These were all great, but I do have to say I >was somewhat disappointed that the second NYC show was as similar as it >was to the show the night before. was it really? she played 23 songs on both nights. on friday, she repeated 10 songs (wampum prayer, a sorta fairytale, pancake, cornflake girl, take to the sky, wednesday, sweet sangria, i can't see new york, iieee, taxi ride). so, over half of the set was different from the night before and the majority of the repeats are songs she'd been doing nearly every night of the tour -- so the repeats were not unique to nyc. in any case, i wasn't trying to say that she didn't mix up the setlist enough over the three nights in new york. she did -- and saturday's show was fairly different from thursday's and friday's. what i was getting at is that even though she has been playing songs from the full body of her work, she seems to gravitate towards a small subset of those songs -- especially when it comes to the newer songs. >Also, by looking at the setlists on The Dent, it seems to me that they are >the least varying sets of any previous tours. i don't know about that either. i haven't worked the numbers up but my impression is that she's mixing things up fairly well. nearly every show has a rarity or two and a fair number of songs that were not played the night before. i think the appearance of little variance is an illusion created by your follow-up point: >You've got five songs that are played at every show, plus several that >show up at just about every show: Take to the Sky, Cornflake Girl, Taxi >Ride, and Sweet Sangria. That just doesn't leave room for a lot of variation. it wouldn't leave a lot of room for variation except that, as richard pointed out, these shows are at least two hours long. so, there is over half the show left to mix things up. however, i do think that these core songs create a feeling of similarity from show to show and that it is further reinforced by having these songs anchor the set: "a sorta fairytale" opens the show, "cornflake girl" follows the introduction of the band, "pancake" and "sweet sangria" take turns being in the first and second halves of the main set, "taxi ride" is one of the encores. >I also don't understand why she seems to be avoiding so many songs from >her new album ("Another Girl's Paradise," "Gold Dust," and "Scarlet's >Walk" have beeen under-represented in the sets, IMHO). That makes little >sense to me. this, i totally agree with. i suspect the decision is based on choosing songs which are upbeat and go over well with a band and an "up" audience. on a weekend night with a large audience which isn't all toriphiles, you gotta tailor the set a little for the marginal fans, i suppose. woj ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2003 09:46:19 EST From: Ange816@aol.com Subject: Re: Tori on Oxygen I thought the show was really great. I taped it last night and I'm watching it again right now! Anyways, I thought it was cute how they asked her those questions from her fans. My favorite was the question "If you had to, which would you give up between lip gloss, high heels, and good wine?" Her response was so funny! I was thinking the same thing about desperado when I heard the first few notes but as the song went on, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm gonna have to look for an mp3 of it as done on the show so's I can hear it again without wearing out the tape I recorded the show to. :D >At first, when I heard the first few notes, I thought, "Oh no... I'm sure she was looking at the audience more than the camera itself..) nearly gave me chills.. I swear, she has probably THE most penetrating stare I've ever EVER seen.. and I don't think she even means to, half the time! >All in all, the program was great. I could have done with more songs and less commercials, but what can you do?< uh.. complain? I sure did! lol.. well not to them but at the TV. "C'MONNNN!! put the show back on already!! ahh.. damn it." lol.. but see, that's why I don't watch much TV anymore unless someone (or something) important--like Tori--is gonna be on. I'll say it again tho--THAT SHOW ROCKED!! and Precious Things was the PERFECT closer, IMO.. woulda been awesome if it'd been the Waitress as well though.. heh heh.. I say it was perfect cuz it was an angry song. I like angry. :D I wonder, tho.. did she come back and do any encores that weren't televised? Sincerely, Cyndi S. I wonder if it was the same one that walloped you. I believe, if I remember right, I muttered something like, "Holy crap!" and then I was kinda bummed that I was watching alone because I wanted to turn to someone and say, "Did you SEE what I just saw!?" Heh. > I like angry. :D I wonder, tho.. did she come back and do any encores > that weren't televised? Oh yeah... Maybe someone on this list was one of the lucky few that got in for the taping? (I thought I recognized one of the people I met at the RCMH shows. But maybe I just imagined that.) You probably don't want to pounce onto the list and ask about it though because folks are already working on it and it'll be announced in due time.
