I run a bad Tori Tab site which is un-updated and only features tabs done by my. I won't bother linking it, it's rather terrible and uses frames. As it happens, i have recently begun to design a backend for a new Tori tab site that i was hoping to put the finishing touches on this weekend, and so would be glad to have it serve the Tori tab purpose raised here recently. First, though, i have some qualms and comments. I am a music minor and a Tori-sheet-music buff of some note. When i tab a Tori song i am interested in duplicating what she does on Piano as best as i can on guitar while having be still relatively playable. For example, i LOVE the Fingerstyle book. Back in the day there was a Tori chord site that literally was just copied straight out of her sheet music books... even when chords were incorrect! Since a vast majority of Tori's songs exist in sheet music with guitar chords written in, is there really any point to having a tab site when anyone can BUY the books to see the chords? Maybe not. After all, if more people bought the books then the books would be better editted and maybe we could get a SCORE BOOK out of Amsco... or, at least, a correct edit with vocal harmony included. (by contrast, Ben Folds Five books were all score books, not just piano). However, there is definitely a point in interpreting Tori's work for guitar even with sheet music in print: it works in different tunings, voicings, and pickings. I know of at least three credible ways to perform Tear In Your Hand in standard tuning, and they don't really follow the chords in the Tori book. Also, there is essentially ZERO information out there for people trying to duplicate bass-lines or Caton's old guitar work on Tori tracks. What i would LOVE to establish is a site of varied transcriptions for guitar players that not only includes simple chords and alternate voicings, but also fuller fingerstyle arrangements, authentic bass/guitar parts, and stripped down versions for singer-songwriters to perform in solo or duo formats. I would also LOVE to have audio samples for some of this. But, i can and will not do this on my own, though i would be more than willing to host this resource on my own domain or even create one for it. As to the later question of whether we actually need Tab or Sheet Music: there are plenty of sheet music sites out there to provide Tori chords. Most guitarists don't read piano music well enough for sheet music to benefit them without the chords written in, anyway. And, i think the only purpose a NEW sheet music site could justifiably have is to NOTE and CORRECT all of the MANY errors in Tori's published sheet music, as a service to others. I have tried to get this started in the past, but there is no interest. So, in short: 1) Do we really want good tabs, or are we just to cheap to buy the sheet music books? (yes, i know the new book *just* got delayed *again*, but i already figured out one entire Tori album just to have the book prove that i was write (tVaB), so am not exactly excited to do it again) 2) Look for a new tab site in the coming weeks, either way. (which will, of course, accept user submissions) 3) Is anyone interested enough to start tabbing the actually guitar/bass parts of Tori's songs (a la the OLGA file for Leather) 4) Is anyone interested enough to start correcting Tori's published sheet music? Looking forward to some replies to break up the "New Onsale Tickets" drudgery ;) - -peter http://crushingkrisis.com ps: Sorry if my tone is a little cocky... i have not only tried to work on this in the Tori community before, but also in the Ani DiFranco community, and it can be very frustrating to not only drum up interest, but sustain the level of webdesign and transcription that this sort of venture needs by definition. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 12:56:08 -0800 From: Brian K Tanaka Subject: Re: anyone here run a tori tab site? I'll just throw this in even though all the piano players here probably know about it already (and I'm not one so I have an excuse for not knowing about this until recently ;-), "Figure It Out" is a "group to share Tori Amos sheetmusic with other musicians. Post your sheetmusic files and web sites, look for the songs you can't figure out, and make requests for the songs you can't find. Also, please follow the founder's request by not posting scans of published sheetmusic from Tori's songbooks. Buy the songbooks." There appears to be a wealth of piano sheetmusic in the Files section. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/figure_it_out/ OK. Back on topic... Whoohoo! > However, there is definitely a point in interpreting Tori's work for guitar > even with sheet music in print... Agreed. As all the examples you point out illustrate, there is a lot of ground to cover that isn't covered today by the books, or the existing websites. Which isn't to say that the existing resources aren't useful, but rather that there are more possibilities (as Peter pointed out in his mail) that I'm sure everyone would enjoy. > But, i can and will not do this on my own, though i would be more than > willing to host this resource on my own domain or even create one for it. Hrm. Well, maybe my bringing up "Figure it Out" wasn't as off-topic as I had originally thought. What if there were a "Figure it Out" yahoogroup specifically for guitar? Sort of a sister site to the piano one. After all, they seem to have a proven working model going (a list to discuss plus companion Files, Database, and Links sections -- the standard yahoogroups buffet). It could be: figure_it_out_guitar@yahoogroups.com... > i think the only > purpose a NEW sheet music site could justifiably have is to NOTE and CORRECT > all of the MANY errors in Tori's published sheet music, as a service to > others. That would fit in the figure_it_out_guitar model. > I have tried to get this started in the past, but there is no > interest. OK. *That* might be a problem. ;-) > ps: Sorry if my tone is a little cocky... i have not only tried to work on > this in the Tori community before, but also in the Ani DiFranco community, > and it can be very frustrating to not only drum up interest, but sustain the > level of webdesign and transcription that this sort of venture needs by > definition. The Figure It Out model may eliminate some or all of those problems: 1. drum up interest: If you can get a core group up to critical mass, you can then actively draw in people from the various lists and the Forums. 2. sustain the level of webdesign and transcription: Webdesign overhead goes away. Transcription overhead gets distributed among the members. I can't imagine that at some point in the past the piano crowd wasn't as disorganized as the guitar crowd is now. Maybe it'd be helpful to drop a note to the figure it out folks (figure_it_out-owner@yahoogroups.com) and ask them how they went about getting organized.
