I have 2 friends who prior to meeting me never knew who Tori was. Well, they have started to get really interested in her after hearing Scarlet's Walk playing incessantly in my car stereo. They have asked me to make a compilation CD of what I consider the essence of her music. I'm hoping that this will get them to buy all of them. They both have bought SW so far, so that's good. Anyway, any suggestions as a "must have" songlist...maybe 15 tracks or so. I know that it's an impossible task to do, but any help would be great! Thanks in advance, Mark ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Jan 2003 12:05:30 -0800 (PST) From: diana Subject: Re: Best of...... Fun!! Let's see, 15 tracks, eh? 1. Precious Things 2. Siren 3. I am very experienced in making mixed tori CD's.. whenever anyone i know says 'who is that?' i'm always like 'i'll make you a tori cd!' I just really love going through all her songs and deciding which ones to put on it. Here's my advice. When making a Tori CD, you always have to keep in mind the point of making the CD. Usually, for me, it's to get someone hooked. Most people who don't know who tori is might be a little weirded out by hearing something like "she's your cocaine." you have to be careful. You also must look at the person you're making the CD for - would they like more of the piano ballads like "winter" or "silent all these years" or would they enjoy more of her up-beat stuff like "siren" or "raspberry swirl?" The next part is deciding which songs. This is the toughest part. You have to take into account whether the songs blend well together, and where to put them. Usually I always come up with which will be my ending song first - I always know it's going to be a slow ballad. I'd either go with "1000 Oceans," "Time," or "Putting The Damage On" as your last song. Usually the CD's I make for people are 18 songs. I try to have a mix of her slower, prettier stuff and her fastpaced, high-energy songs. Now comes deciding the order of the songs. This always takes a long time for me because I'm constantly going "maybe this song would be good here, but wait should I put "Jackie's Strength" or "Caught A Lite Sneeze" after this.. or maybe "Precious Things" should go here..." and on and on. So it's really up to you how you order the songs. But here's my tip: The little earthquakes, under the pink, and BFP album is relatively lower volume than choirgirl, venus, strange, and scarlet. Try not to put a song like "Hey Jupiter (album version)" right after a loud song like "Spark." You don't want to put it in chronological order, but taking the volume into account is important. You don't want them to be having to turn it up and then down all the time. Usually I make a lyric booklet for my friends, and I just put it on regular 8.5 by 11 paper rather than trying to put it in a CD-case-shaped booklet, just because it takes less time. I recommend making a lyric booklet because knowing tori's lyrics are a HUGE part of understanding her essence. Alright, now that i've got all my babble out of the way.. Here's my set list for you. This is a CD i've made for a few people that I call "The Best Of The Best." It's 18 songs all together. I've found that this set list works really well. The songs really blend together nicely. It does have a lot of singles, but these are the songs I really think help to get people hooked. By the way, since you said your friends already bought SLG.. i've put a star by the SLG songs and suggested possible alternative songs. 01. Crucify 02. Cornflake Girl 03. Strange Little Girl 04. First of all, the '92 and '94 data that was readily available has FINALLY been integrated into the database. MUCHO thanks to Missy "Flood" for her painstaking work on making this happen. Even more thanks for her patience as I sat on the spreadsheets she created for me for a LONG time... There is pretty good information for about half of the '94 shows, so it's a little interesting. There is almost NO information on setlists of the '92 tour as much of the info has been garnered from various boots that exist (and there aren't that many from the '92 tour). If you have any corrections/additions/comments on any of the '92 and '94 shows, please feel free to drop me a message and I'll see how well I can sort out the mess. We'll never have complete data for either of these two tours, but it's fun to get as complete as possible... If anyone has any other sets from those two tours, feel free to mail me... Next up, please send me any setlists from any Y Kant Tori Read shows from the late 80's if you have them... (kidding). On a side note, the US leg is now finished, so please feel free to use the site for any various thoughts you might have -- I have only a couple interesting things: - -- She played a total of 91 (!) songs in the 32 dates. - -- Just as she played MAAG every show last tour, she has played it zero times this tour. - -- She played exactly ZERO songs from Strange Little Girls on this tour. - -- She played ZERO new cover songs this tour (unless you count "Wheels on the Bus") - -- She played her third soundtrack song, Carnival, for the first time ever (which threw me for a loop since I completely forgot about that song -- I thought it was a cover of a Natalie Merchant song at first...) - -- The most common B-sides: Take to the Sky (26 times), Sugar (15 times), Cooling (10 times), and Honey (6 times) - -- The most common cover: Famous Blue Raincoat (5 times - yay!) - -- She played 15 songs only one time each - -- She played Spring Haze (from To Venus and Back) at every show, as well as the following from the new album: I Can't See New York, Sweet Sangria, Wednesday, A Sorta Fairytale, and Wampum Prayer That's all I have -- thanks again for all the great feedback on the site -- and thanks again to MikeWhy for his continually awesome Dent!
