According to The Dent: "The Dent also did not exist during this tour, and so I did not get to document it. The Dent did post one concert review from this tour from the San Diego, CA show on May 10, 1992. This was likely the first Tori Amos concert review ever posted on the net!" Not so. I've removed newsgroup/personal details as the newsgroup used wasn't a music related one, the poster was a student at Edinburgh University at the time. - ----- Newsgroups: xxxxxxx Date: 1992-04-10 13:30:49 PST Tori Amos, Edinburgh Queen's Hall, Wednesday April 8th. This was the second time I have been to hear Tori Amos play and sing; the first time was at Edinburgh's Music Box earlier this year, a somewhat more rough-and-ready venue. Personally I prefer such places, I find the atmosphere more informal and relaxed (and the ability to get a beer at any time during the performance is a big plus!), but the Queen's had the advantage of providing Tori with a very fine grand piano, a definite improvement on the electric piano she had at the Music Box; the electric piano actually sounded rather better than I thought it would, but had some bug that seemed to necessitate Tori's having to crawl around under it after almost every song to jiggle with loose wires or somesuch. To my annoyance I arrived at the Queen's Hall gig late, sweating profusely through my having cycled the two or three miles from my house in something like ten minutes flat. This was due to my having forgotten to take my ticket in to work with me, rather silly as I had to work quite late that evening and my place of work is only a few hundred yards from the Queen's. Anyway, I got inside, expecting to catch just the last two numbers, but luckily found that I had only missed a couple of the first songs. A big treat was in store. The piano sounded wonderful at the touch of Tori's very capable hands, as did Tori herself. She has a powerful voice, full and high and somewhat breathy. There is a lot of humour as well as a lot of sadness in her music. This comes across in the delivery, both vocally and instrumentally, as well as in the lyrics. She writes real good toons (most of her material is original to her) which are highly melodic and harmonic, but there is a weird edge, a slight dischord, which is a little reminiscent of - OK, I have to make this comparison now - Kate Bush. Having said that, she is individual and very talented in her own right, I make the comparison as a high accolade, not as "just another woman who sings and plays piano". She sang most of the recorded material that I have heard - I think all that I *haven't* heard are the other tracks on the CD single of _China_, which are Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones and Nirvana covers; although I recently acquired it I have no CD player on which to play it! however she played all those at the gig - plus a little more besides. She sang a wonderful song which sounds very familiar to me, with the lines "Canada, Oh Canada" in it, but it is not on any of the records or CDs that I have and I wonder if this is also a cover. Also to my shame, I don't know where she comes from; North America certainly, but is she Canadian herself? She sang all or most of the tracks from her first and current album _Little Earthquakes_; I strongly recommend this album, although I prefer her live performances as I believe the songs come across better with just her and the piano, without the added string arrangements and so forth. Tori Amos is beautiful and sensuous, with creamy white skin and long flaming hair which pours down in waves over her shoulders and back; she moves sinuously as she sings and plays, every now and then shaking her encroaching red locks back from her lovely face with a flamboyant and almost wanton toss of the head. She talks to her audience in a light-hearted fashion, but doesn't shy away from serious matters; she dedicated _Me and a Gun_ (a song about rape) to a certain 14 year old Irish girl. She made it plain that _Me and a Gun_ tells of her personal experience. The power of her voice and its rhythmic and harmonic interplay with the piano makes for a very moving and somehow personal experience; I feel she is singing her songs directly to me, or that in some way they could have come from me if only I had the expressive power to have produced them. Even when the meaning of the lyrics is not entirely clear to me, there seems to be an imagery that I relate to, that talks to my soul. At both the Tori Amos gigs I attended I found it impossible to maintain dry eyes, or to keep from moving in sympathy with the music. Her voice continued to sing to me in my head long after I had reluctantly made my way outside. {I would like to thank Tanaqui for introducing me to the work of this wonderful musician.} Sara April 10th, 1992 - ----- I remember this very well as this was my first (and favourite, she no longers plays Edinburgh alas) Tori show. Her first ever show in Edinburgh at the Music Box I can only assume was promoted solely via word-of-mouth as I wasn't aware she'd played the city previously until years later. - -- schaden_freude@hotmail.com _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 15:14:07 -0400 From: dances with virgos Subject: tori is billboard's artist of the day Tori Amos Takes Listeners Along On 'Scarlet's Walk' By Christa Titus The concept of Tori Amos' last album, 2001's "Strange Little Girls," was straightforward: She reinterpreted a collection of songs written and performed by men to give them a female perspective. However, "Scarlet's Walk," her Epic debut (Oct. 29), is a multi-layered tale. It's about searching for the true roots of America alongside a journey of self-discovery. It's about the nation's reaction to Sept. 11, 2001. But perhaps most intriguingly, it's about a "soul map," as the singer/songwriter calls it, which is imprinted on each one of us and shows the route of the most defining moments of our lives. Amos' maternal grandfather, who was raised by a woman who escaped the Trail of Tears, often told her stories about Native Americans during her childhood. "He would always talk to me about how people had a map, an invisible map that was etched in, that was part of who they were," Amos remembers. Years later, she "began to understand that certain places in people and events etch themselves into each of us differently, and that becomes in a sense, who we are, what we look like." A college tour Amos did after Sept. 11 last year played a prominent role in the creation of "Scarlet." "I went on the road last year with different eyes and when the masks were down. That means people were telling me things in letters, at the stage door; things that you don't say when tomorrow's coming," she recalls. "Secrets that people were holding were coming out. "People were asking some questions for the first time and seeing America for the first time as a living being," Amos continues. "The Native Americans always thought that and some people do feel that, but for some people it's an object. I watched people start to have this relationship with this woman called America." A child prodigy who began playing music at age 2, Amos gained national attention 10 years ago with "Silent All These Years." The lead track from "Little Earthquakes" introduced her ethereal voice, confessional lyrics, and intense compositions driven by her piano -- an instrument she is immediately identified with, thanks to her hypnotizing live performances where she sits anything but still upon the piano bench. Her artistry has yielded a total of eight Grammy Award nominations for her past seven albums, but "Scarlet's Walk" -- with the deep emotional pull of such songs as "Your Cloud," "I Can't See New York," the title track, and "Gold Dust" -- is her most cohesive and emotionally moving since her Atlantic solo debut. A limited edition of "Scarlet's Walk" will contain a DVD of exclusive material, and the album is the key to Scarlet's Web, an online alternative world that will be brimming with interactive elements and updates from Amos when she returns to the road Nov. 7. _______________________________________________________________________ Excerpted from the Oct. 19, 2002, issue of Billboard. I think Tori'd need to at least be there for the whole "hmm.. no.. that doesn't work" or "YES! use that!" kind of consulting bit with the writing of it as a Broadway musical.. otherwise.. I'd love to see that happen myself.. that'd be beautiful! Sincerely, Cyndi S. Crawford http://www.platinumcomplication.com/cyndi/ Tori Amos' response when asked to describe herself in five words: "I.
