And Im quite certain she knows how to pronounce all these words, as she has never mispronouced words during her interviews. She just simply chooses to pronounce them diffrently in her songs, or, to stress certain parts of the words, to add effect to the song...Its quite intentional, and Ive always found it endearing. She also plays around with the words in her live shows, though for the most part, things are bit more intelligible/decipherable that on the records. Its definitely not out of some linguistic deficit, I assure you. ~~Maria Trading Website: http://www.auburn.edu/~aguirmg ******************************************************** "first lets unzip your religion down..." - -Tori Amos ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 09:38:47 -0500 From: "Mark Harbott" Subject: Re: precious-things-digest V7 #206 > > She mispronounces it as "seepio" but then she still never > > learned how to pronounce "silicon" either. Interesting that you say that. I don't hear her sing "see-pio". In fact, to my ears she incorrectly sings it as "see-pia".......oh well, it seems that not only do we get different things out of her lyrics, we also hear her differently... (I haven't heard any songs yet, but I've read lyrics, so that counts. :D ) but one thing that doesn't change--and I hope I make sense here--is what inspired the song. What inspired the song, whether it's one thing or many things, doesn't change. What does change is the interpretations among all the EWF, because we base it on our own experiences, more or less.. Um, She wrote all the Scarlet's Walk songs. The silicon(e) is in reference to the way she says silicone in "I Don't Like Mondays," that was written by some English guy. I like the way she sometimes fails to enunciate, makes it interesting. And I hear see-pe-ia in the song. That improv has a lot of meaning and weight for me. Sometimes I can hardly listen to it; it wrecks me every time. To me there is a beautiful and crushingly sad intertwining of the external (9/11, the two towers) and the internal/personal (heart aching, falling down like the towers) in these words. (Maybe this is obvious. But it's done so *well* I have to go on.) The horror of the events of 9/11 overlaps in strange symmetry with the hurt we feel personally, say when a relationship withers and we are left in pain and rejected ("does that mean I'm not worth hanging out for?") -- the two towers acting as symbols for the two people in the "falling" relationship. The intertwining is so perfect, neither element upstaging the other and all executed with such fine economy of language, it boggles my mind that this was an improv. (It *was* an improv, right folks?) This is the kind of thing that cements my undying admiration and devotion to Tori. And then as if that weren't enough, she also packs into this short verse a glimmer of hope in the form of the love and support between people. Tori talks about how she values the exchange of love between audience and artist ("intake and outtake", as she puts it on the LE video) and I like to think that she is, in that spirit, addressing us (at least in part) when she says "My turn, I'm here for you now". - -- - -- -bt - -- ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V7 #207 *************************************
