Well, Greg. I hope this doesn't mean you're not a fan any more. I myself have also been a fan since LE. A die-hard, obsessed, bawl-at-the-concerts type of fan. Her music has touched me in a way that not only my friends can't seem to understand, but myself included too! I personally think the new album is a very poor demonstration of her talents. I think she's done as good as she possibly could when considering all the songs are covers, AND under a specific theme. I mean, if I ever heard of a doomed idea, it would have been at the top of the list. What was she thinking? I have no idea. I've heard a "rumor" that she was fulfilling an Altantic Records contractual obligation of some sort. Anyway, all that aside, I really don't see how any of the album is that great. I've listened to '97 Bonnie and Clyde and it "almost" gave me the chills. But what's she doing? She's whispering Eminem's lyrics with some eerie background music. Big deal!! And, to put it shortly, the rest of the album does the same thing for me. It's "almost" good. It seems there was very little effort put into the songs themselves. I'm sure Tori put everything she had into MAKING the album, but that effort doesn't shine through the speakers. So...I don't care for the new album. Oh well. I still love Tori. And all I have to do to feel "obsessed" again to to listen to her music that makes ME happy! I Don't Like Mondays would make a GREAT single, but you don't really want something like that going out to anybody but EWF because it might be taken the wrong way. But it's my definite fav on the album, the song I can groove to most, besides SLG. I really think SLG will be a single on the radio. As far as what other song she might sing on TV, I think everyone would really enjoy hearing her sing I'm Not in Love, mostly because it's a song almost anyone over 25 remembers, it's catchy, and it's a good line to throw for potential EWF who might want to join us. I like Time, but it's not my fav... so draggy and slow. Hey-- what about New Age? That might go over well on TV, even with the context of everything going on right now. As far as the comment that the former EWF made regarding SLG, I almost agree, but I'm waiting for Tori's next real album with her own stuff. To me, SLG sounds thrown together very quickly. I hate EtS, although I loved the original. Tori seems to not have given too much thought for technical sound (what about the beginning of the song SLG--those distant drums-- sounds like a bad recording). That's just one example. And the album is perfectly dreary. I mean, she's had some slow songs before, especially with her earlier stuff, but the light has changed, and the sound that shadows the light has changed, and it seems so dark and uninviting, and almost uninteresting. Could Tori be running out of beauty? I miss her ethereal, fairy quality. I want to hear her smile in a song again. And yes, I know art changes and artists must evolve. But this evolution (if this album is any indication) distances me from her a little. Comments? - -jen ===== "Africa is a nation that suffers from incredible disease." - -President George W. People Are 'Strange' It's the kind of concept only Tori Amos could come up with: recording an album comprised completely of cover songs written by men. Enter "Strange Little Girls," due this week from Atlantic and highlighted by Amos' interpretations of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold," Tom Waits' "Time," Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays," Eminem's "97' Bonnie & Clyde," and the Beatles "Happiness Is a Warm Gun." "Words can wound and words can heal," Amos says, "and both are included on the album ... All of these songs were created by powerful wordsmiths, whether you agree with them or not." To reinforce the identity of each of the characters "singing" the songs, photographer Thomas Schenk's pictures of Amos as each woman grace the "Strange Little Girls" CD packaging. Amos kicks off a North American tour in support of the new set Sept. 28 in West Palm Beach, Fla. The trek, which runs into late November, will find the artist performing without a backing band for the first time on tour since 1994. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 14:38:34 EDT From: XXXPandora@aol.com Subject: re: sound of Strange Little Girls jcypres22@yahoo.com (Jennifer Mitts Cypres) wrote: <> what?? that is an effect ... it is meant to sound that way ... !!!! Mark Hawley is an excellent engineer and Tori and the others who worked on this album are technically some of the most respected musicians and sound designers in the world (respected by other engineers and musicians). Come on, would she have asked Adrian Belew to play on her album if she wasn't giving much thought to sound?!?! Anyway, I think enjoy the silence is awful - the original is one of my favorite songs and I hate Tori's version because I see the potential for her to do that song in a totally different and innovative way. The way she did it is just so boring to me. I understand the concept behind the starkness and simplicity of the song but I just think she could have done so much better. Monday September 17 10:57 AM EDT Tori Amos Discusses Tragedy And Musical Life As A Mother (9/17/01, 10 a.m. ET) -- Tori Amos was in New York City when the terrorists struck Tuesday (September 11). She wrote on her website: "Those of you who are strong need to be there for those who have lost someone. We have to be here for each other right now." Amos will release her album of song interpretations, Strange Little Girls, on September 25. Amos told LAUNCH that her life has changed since her marriage and birth of her daughter Nyatasha, who is now 1 year old. "As a songwriter a lot of my work has been about frustration, and that's what it was supposed to be about at that time," she said. "Because that's what I was going through. Is there a place to write about the experiences that I've been through in the last couple of years? We'll see. Because it's not really about frustration now. There are different things that come up." She added, "You can never go back. You can't be that person alone in an apartment bitter and gutted. Unable to fly due to the tragedy of September 11, Tori had driven all the way from Florida earlier in the week to be in Union Square for an event that was almost cancelled due to recent events. The date was kept, and the resultant line wrapped around the block and down the street. Even with the multitude of fans lining up, Tori took the time to chat with everyone, giving out hugs and signing CDs. Tori's new CD, STRANGE LITTLE GIRLS, arrived in stores this past Tuesday. The innovative album features 12 tracks originally written and performed by male artist such as: Eminem, The Beatles, Slayer, Neil Young, Depeche Mode, and many others. Each song was then taken apart by Tori and gently rebuilt to be told from the viewpoint of 13 distinct female characters (one song features twins). The result is an album which explores the ways that men and women see the world, and how they see each other. To hear clips from any of the tracks on STRANGE LITTLE GIRLS, including "Strange Little Girl," a remake the 1982 tune written by The Stranglers, visit her artist page, or spend some time at her official site, ToriAmos.com. To see Tori live, watch for her major cross-country concert tour, slated to begin in Miami on September 28th and conclude in San Francisco on November 21st. Also, I just wanted to add my 2 cents about the SLG album and some other discussion that has recently occured, I've never posted much but I though I'd chime in if ya'll don't mind.... - I've liked Tori since I was in high school and bought the BFP album (specifically for Hey Jupiter which really touched me at the time). I wasn't absolutely crazy over her, and after that album I sorta lost touch w/ Tori until I got on my female musician kick in late college - and I think then I really realized how important she had become in the world of female musicians after I did a HUGE project centering on the women within the music recording industry... I know recently a lister posted some "Anti-Modern-Tori" comments... I too went through a phase where I thought everything after BFP was like nails on a chalkboard compared to earlier Tori stuff - but I have realized now that it was just a very talented artist (thats ahead of her time) broadening her horizons - and actually - if I listened to her new music without old prejudices against such music - it was amazing! It was the same way with Ani and other openly honest female musicians for me. I guess actually it was quite refreshing (and came as a shock) to hear a woman sing HONESTLY about real life and pain rather than what women were "suppose" to sing about, and, consequently has affected me in many ways. SLG upon 1st-5th or so review I was very disappointed, but after I listened to it with a more open mind, I really realized how good it is! Their really isn't a bad song on the album - and I rarely skip over any! "Rattlesnakes" is probably my favorite on the album ~ but I haven't had a chance to digest the all the songs' lyrics, so this may change. I listen to all of the songs at work with the exception of Bonnie & Clyde which really sends chills down my spine and distracts me from my work haha. But anywho, I know FTCH received a LOT of praise as her best album yet (well, perhaps the one that really sorta made her "pop-ish") but I really think that SLG is prob! ably on e of the best albums she has recorded! All of her albums have touched deep chords in me for very personal reasons. When I list my favorite muscians (which include Ani, Sarah, Stevie Nicks, Alanis, and a host of other unknowns), Tori is high up on that list b/c I think she is quite influential to others.... So while I may not be the BIGGEST Tori fan in the world, she is one of my favorites, I have TREMENDOUS respect for her, I really enjoy her music and definetly think that the new SLG... well... ROCKS! ~~meg ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 21:27:27 EDT From: Icicle1139@aol.com Subject: Re: On Tori's wrist ~ Time is slow and draggy??
