Subject: Strange to play again tonight 7/18 Hi, I just talked to the DJ at http://wber.monroe.edu/ (very nice guy) and he said he'll try to play the song again tonight before he leaves at 2 am. It will be right after Blink 182 and the new single from 311. They were supposed to play it around 8:30, but they played it at 8. If anyone is going to the Miami concert, though, I'm just going to put my name out here too. My one friend who likes Tori Amos is going to college in a month so she'll be up north and can't come home till October. I hate going to concerts (or anything similar) alone, so if anyone wants to talk, you can email me. (And even if no one does, there's no way in hell that's gonna stop me from going :-) MTS ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 10:25:28 EDT From: Dracovixen@aol.com Subject: "Strange Little Girl" and Songs of a Goddess I have the single!!! Whoopie!!! I have the winamp on repeat, and I'm listening for the 6th time! Yay! "Strange Little Girl" rocks! I can see why it was released as a single, it is much more radio-friendly than anything else she's done. Now I have to look for a bunch of other songs to download, so that I can burn this to CD on a mix...I can't just waste a whole CD for one song...I probably will though. It's Tori! :) Well, I'm also excited because I have the Tori Amos tribute album (the new one). I know not many people like goth music, but I love a lot of the stuff that comes out of Cleopatra Records, so I was excited to hear a tribute album coming out of there to my fave musician. (by the way, there is a string instrumental tribute coming out Sept 11th, check thedent.com). Anyway, it's really growing on me. I doubt many Toriphiles will enjoy it, but some may. Unto Ashes did a beautiful job of redoing "Beauty Queen" in Latin with string instruments...it sounds gorgeous. I also love their other material, all very traditional sounding, gothic and Celtic music. Amber Asylum did "Leather", and though I do like some of their other music, this particular cover was just kinda like, eh, ok. The ever odd Glampire did "Bliss", and yes, he is a man, and there is no woman singing with him. I like some of Glampire's stuff, and I think this cover is growing on me. Some parts are really awesome, he's really rocking it out in a trancey goth rock way. Rei Toei's trip-hop cover of "Sugar" I'm really starting to like. I had never heard any of their material before, but I think I may check them out now. Tapping the Vein I was already a huge fan of, so when I heard their cover of "Cornflake Girl", I actually choked up. One of my favorite bands covering my favorite musician, who could ask for more? This cover has to be the best one on the album (maybe I'm biased). It's an all-out rock version, and her voice is amazing. She sings with this soft, child-like voice, and then just lets it all loose, and you're never expecting it. Everyone check out Tapping the Vein at mp3.com, they have a few mp3s, "Numb" is the best one to start with. Also, when listening to the cover, listen for the guitarist, he's amazing, and this time, he put all of Tori's piano notes to guitar (you know, that amazing piano part towards the end of the song). :) I don't like October Hill's version of "Winter". I don't think those melodies of that song can really be put to trip-hop music. Maybe if they just took the lyrics, and made their own song, it would have been better. I always like it when bands take songs and do them in their style, instead of trying as hard as they can to stay true to the original. Though, some songs that stay fairly true to the original are awesome, such as The Shroud's cover of "Sinking" by The Cure. But, when covers are made in their own style, for example, Tori's cover of Lovesong (The Cure, also)...same melody and harmony, same lyrics, different presentation, different music, slower pace...and then Snake River Conspiracy did an awesome rock/industrial cover of that song...Anyway, I'm getting off-topic here. I'm just trying to say that when I buy a cover album, or a tribute album, whatever you want to call it, I'm not expecting for the songs to sound like the original. In fact, I like to see what those bands could do with that song, how they interpreted it, what special twist they can put on it...It makes things interesting. However, October Hill covering "Winter" in their style while trying to stay true to the melodies, did not work. Ah, now we come to Voltaire. He's an odd one, but can be very amusing. He made "Caught a Lite Sneeze" a dancey song, with a techno beat layered underneath string instruments, his happy lounge singer voice, and a faster tempo. You may not like this cover, but do one thing for me. Go to mp3.com, and look up Voltaire. Download his song "Ex-Lover's Lover". I laughed for an hour. This song is an Irish Jig sounding song with lyrics such as "I can't wait for the day when I finally can pile the bodies of my ex-lover's lovers, I'll pile high to the sky, the bodies of my ex-lover's lovers, die die die-da-dee-die, die die die, watch them die!" It's uproariously funny. Ok, so I have a morbid sense of humor sometimes, but listen to this song, and then try not to crack a smile. :) This Ascension, an ethereal goth group, does a very nice cover of "Crucify". Meegs from Coal Chamber and Jessicka of Jack off Jill got together to do "Iieee", and though I like the vocals, and I like the separate pieces of music, the end result was disappointing. Very disappointing. Temple of Rain does "God", and I am growing to like their cover, and I already liked their other material. Very cool band. St. Eve's rendition of "She's Your Cocaine" did nothing for me. A couple people who's names escape me at the moment got together to create SIMPLE, and did a slowed down easy going version of Raspberry Swirl. I love Raspberry Swirl for its fast pace and dancey feel, but they made it a very nice song here. Dragon Style did an interesting cover of "Space Dog", a very 80's cover mixed with drum 'n' bass beats...it was odd, but I liked it. So, that's my 5 bucks and some tens. :) Black Dove PS- My boyfriend says Tapping the Vein kicks ass!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 12:41:36 -0700 From: "Wilson Picket" Subject: Covering Madonna's "Live to Tell" Can anyone help me with Tori's cover of Madonna's "Live to Tell" _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 16:45:18 EDT From: Dracovixen@aol.com Subject: 97' Bonnie and Clyde mp3 http://staticcrash.com/hedonic/tori...and%20clyde.mp3 If you wish to hear a slightly murky mp3 of "97 Bonnie and Clyde", thanks to Sharpie Pen there is one. Perhaps this has already been posted here, but just in case... This was my reply to this song when I first heard it: "I am sitting here in tears as I listen to this song. It is frightening, and as everyone was saying "haunting", "chilling", "really creepy", and totally amazing. My god, I have never heard anything so fucked up as this, and believe me, I've heard a lot of fucked up things." That's all I had to say about it.
