It's pretty cool. My teacher is a very interesting young guy and he's always bringing us the most fascinating, obscure articles.. Anyway, today he brought one from The 29 January 2001 edition of Newsweek under the "Science" category. The article was called "Searching for the God Within" by a woman names Sharon Begley. The article is about these new scientific findings that suggest that a belief in a greater being in innate, a mere function of humans. NOW to the Tori related part! There was a mention of Sufis! The article was discussing how it has been discovered that repetitive rhythm can cause one to feel serenity or arousal, and contrasted the effect of incantatory hymns (which have been proven to cause feelings of bliss) with the fast beat associated with the dances of the Sufis. Here's the little blurb. "A 1997 study by Japanese researchers showed that repetitive rhythms can drive the brain's hypothalamus, which can bring on either serenity or arousal. That may explain why incantatory hymns can trigger a sense of quietude that believers interpret as spiritual tranquility and bliss. In contrast, the fast rapturous dancing of Sufi mystics causes hyperarousal, scientists find, which can make participants feel as if they are channeling the energy of the universe. " Armed with this info, anyone wanna take a stab? "...Dance with the Sufis celebrate your top ten in the charts of pain..." Hope that wasn't too long winded.. And if it was I hope it was worth it. For what it's worth--and I can't cite a source on this one--but I was talking with someone two or three tours ago who had either mentioned this to Tori or was standing next to someone who mentioned it to Tori, and Tori didn't know anything about it but found it to be cool how the universe can do things such as this. (Thanks Mikewhy!!) I won't spoil it for people who haven't read it yet, so I'll only say a tiny bit from it. In the post he says that the new album is Tori's "most painful." Wow. It would have to be PRETTY painful to better the pain evident in some Pele tracks (Professional Widow, Putting The Damage On...more I can't think of....). I really can't wait for it! Pele is my favourite album so far. I'm wondering, has anyone read the book "When > Rabbit Howls" by Trudie Chase? that's a correlation that's been brought up several times over the years, and while meaningful was never substantiated to the intent of the song. it is a great book though, and chase herself is an amazing woman - -- ~ kelley FINNatic #69 "and your earth moves beneath your own dream landscape ... on borderland we run, we run and dont look back." ~ U2, a sort of homecoming _____________________ The Saferoom Project http://www.saferoom.org/ http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/saferoom ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 19:00:54 -0000 From: "Tom xxxxx" Subject: Re:Rabbit Hi there. I too, also have wondered if there were a connection between the two. I don't see one and have thought about it, but it's such a coincidence. I thought I read somewhere that the Rabbit in CG was a Deadhead who lived in the woods. Even knowing that I can't help but think of Trudy Chase when I hear that line. I do tend to cut people more slack during these in-between album times, but I probably went farther than I should have after the main points were made. My apologies. 2) Unsubscribing It seems that it's time to remind people how to do this again, since someone decided that the best way to unsub was to try to spam the list with a few 1 megabyte email messages. That, by the way, is not the correct method. To unsubscribe from either version of precious-things please follow these simple steps. Step 1) Use the email account you are trying to unsubscribe. Step 2) Address your email to majordomo@smoe.org Step 3) In the body of the message write either unsubscribe precious-things or unsubscribe precious-things-digest Step 4) Send the email. Step 5) If you get an error message from majordomo (claiming for example that the address you are trying to unsub isn't a member of the list) please contact woj and I at owner-precious-things@smoe.org and we'll do our best to help you. 3) List addresses When sending messages to the list please use *only* the precious-things@smoe.org and not owner-precious-things@smoe.org. The owner address is only for list-related problems that you need woj or I to help you with.
