I also like Aimee Mann. Cant believe i forgot to mention Aimme myself. The MAGNOLIA soundtrack is essential. Also, the electronica group Sneaker Pimps is great as well and features an original fem. vocalist. - -AJ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 00:25:07 EST From: JNe9027355@aol.com Subject: RE On the Lookout In a message dated 3/27/2001 10:33:08 PM Pacific Standard Time, owner-precious-things-digest@smoe.org writes: > And then there are electronic/techno/trip-hop/industrial musicians who use > often use female vocalists, such as Delerium, Massive Attack, Robert Miles, > BT, Chicane, Die Form, Rhea's Obsession, Juno Reactor, and Hybrid...can > anyone suggest any more? Have any comments? Yea, another DJ who uses good female vocals: ATB. as for female musicians, how about Blondie? Dusty Springfield...Annie Lennox...Melanie C(really good)...Mary J Blige...Nico(eh sorta)...Bijou Philips (check out the I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER sndtrack) Karen Carpenter...Aurora (did a badass cover of Duran's "ordinary world") and mariah carey is always good. Damn, too many to keep up with. I just find recommendations thru amazon, they usually hook me up w/the goodies. - -AJ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 21:29:46 EST From: Dracovixen@aol.com Subject: Re: Always on the Lookout for New Music I can't believe you said the BS word. You should be stoned, or something. I have more reccommendations now then i know what to do with. I'll be happily searching for music for the next ten years of my life. When I have received what seems to be all the music reccommendations, does anyone want the list? It has to be the most extensive list I have ever seen of mainly female artists. Should I just e-mail it to the list? I would just like to thank everyone for the recs. I should be set musically for the next ten years of my life. I had over a 100 responses, many containing LISTS of music recs. You people rock. I'm going to attempt to categorize everything as it was explained to me, and then I will post it to the list. Prepare yourselves for a shock. :) This is going to be a huge undertaking, and I'm pretty busy this weekend, so it'll be out next week. :) Maybe I should explore a few artists a week, and then have an artist of the week sort of thing. :) My current artist, or rather, artists, of the week are An Pierle and Imogen Heap. Both are very cool. An Pierle is a psycho girl and her piano, often described as both "sweet and violent". She's my latest craze. She's hard to find, though. She's from Belgium. I guess she is most well-known for her cover of "Are Friends Electric?" Songs I reccomend though, are "Tower", "Mud Stories", and "Siamese Twins". Imogen Heap is awesome, and I have only heard three songs. "Miel", "Mutual", and "Rake it In". I love "Rake it In"! Her singing is great, and her music is very well done, both in piano and guitar, and some electronic-tinged pieces. Well, that's all for now. Black Dove PS- Thanks everyone again! Sorry if I didn't answer your e-mail personally, but I had a lot to go through! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 20:20:00 From: "Lauren DePhillips" Subject: upside down quote and juarez solo Hey. This following post is pretty old but I haven't been keeping up with digests and just had to comment. >"Dust a Bunny" has the following lyrics on his or her message: > >"I found the secret to life >I'm okay when everything is not okay." >- - Tori Amos >"Upside Down" > >Now, I have always wondered, does this mean she *likes* it when things >are >not ok, or that she does fine in spite of the fact that things are >not ok? >I always thought it meant she enjoyed being sad sometimes--isnt >there a >quote "Sad has some cute little dresses" or something like >that? Whaddaya >think? This post really opened my eyes: I had never considered that the line could be interpreted differently from the way I took it. I always interpreted it as: I'm ok ONLY when things aren't ok. I think this fits with the idea of making / keeping yourself a victim. However, the second interpretation: I'm ok EVEN when everything isn't ok, seems to ring true also. Maybe the difference between being a victim, and being in control means moving from the first statement to the second. Also, I wanted to ask about Tori's performance of Juarez at her solo show at Royal Albert Hall. I just heard it recently (on the boot So High, Solo) and was blown away. How does she achieve this sound? It almost sounded as if she was reaching in to the piano and plucking the strings at some point. Anyway, I never liked Juarez live, probably because the few times (two actually) I've seen it live Tori's voice and the piano (to some degree) were obscured by the other instruments. However, this version has so much intensity and directness, and the piano is absolutely gorgeous. It must have been amazing to be there. lauren15@hotmail.com http://www.geocities.com/lilya8 ********************** "The way I see, I was really fortunate to get a serious head dunking when I was baptized. Combination of K's Choice, Deftones, and a tiny bit of Tool. Check out Open Your Eyes, Lord of the Boards, and We Use the Pain. Balligomingo Very similar to Delerium. A little more pop-oriented (no long progressive ramblings). Actually, Kristy Thirsk, longtime Delerium vocalist, appears on a few tracks. The album comes out in 2002, but there are tons of tracks on Napster, like Falling, Lust, and Heat. Dead Can Dance, Vas Basically, acoustic Delerium. If you took away the electronics of Delerium, you'd get DCD. In fact, Delerium uses lots of DCD samples in their work (the low wailing voice in #5 on Karma is from the DCD Persian Love Song). Vas is a very similar group to DCD. The lead's voice isn't quite as absolutely flawlessly divine as Lisa Gerrard's of DCD, but the music is similar. World progressive type. Fleming & John Hard to describe. High wailing voice set to quirky, witty pop-rock with an edge. I'm So Small is a definite favorite. They're most popular single (which wasn't popular at all) was Ugly Girl, which is quite humorous. Holly McNarland Very deep, dark rock chick from Canada. AMAZING cover of Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight. Also check out Numb and Elmo. Very strong voice and rock rhythm section. Olive Female fronted trip-hop/electronica. You've probably heard their songs You're Not Alone or I'm Not in Love as they were very big club hits (and small hits in their own right). Great stuff. Bif Naked If Green Day had a female lead singer, it would be Bif Naked. Moment of Weakness and her cover of We're Not Gonna Take It are excellent samples. Gingham Schmuz Very diverse local band. Some of their newer material (Fallen is a GREAT rock song in the vein of heavy 3 Doors Down) is heavy and nice. They're older material was more of a G Love & Special Sauce/Galactic funk-rock groove, but get Fallen. Kristin Hersh Very Ani Difranco-ish. Over the Rhine Very Dido-ish. In fact, Dido cowrote a song on their upcoming album, Films for Radio. Amanda Ghost Saw her on your possibles list. Just thought I'd reaffirm that. Electronic-tinged rock sound. Very strong voice. Filthy Mind and Idol are my favorites. Great stuff. And if you're not principally against male vocalists, I'd suggest you check out Tool. Maynard (lead of Tool and A Perfect Circle) Keenan's voice trancends all comparisons. Simply angelic. And the band's music complements it perfectly. Dark, grumbling, and smart. Check out H, Stinkfist, Opiate, and Pushit. matthew. I'm drinking spirits in the hopes that I can find myself one. ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V6 #58 ************************************
