"hounds of love" is a good one to start.... also, the shroud has a beautiful ethereal sound. and faith and the muse. julee cruise. milla jovovich. siouxsie and the banshees (siouxsie before the creatures). and *probably my favorite band* miranda sex garden..... oh, and if you like portishead, you should definitely check out lamb. they are very portishead-like, but a little more drum and bass style, if you will:) oh, and not all of delerium's music has female vocalist. most of their music is lyricless.... and, one band you should check out that isn't female (but is quite amazing) would be the tear garden....as well as some sister projects, skinny puppy, legendary pink dots, edward ka-spel....the list goes on.... *glitter* ~jen~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 01:36:56 EST From: JNe9027355@aol.com Subject: Re: precious-things-digest V6 #55 In a message dated 3/25/2001 10:37:02 PM Pacific Standard Time, owner-precious-things-digest@smoe.org writes: > You know, I'm just a tad disappointed in this line. So I have a suggestion. Anyone listen to Meryn Cadell? She's a Canadian and little known. I discovered her years ago while listening to a college radio station. I have her Angel Food for Thought, and not only is she hilarious but witty, cynical, and just edgy enough without putting you off. I also like Aimee Mann. - -jen Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Subject: OT: On the Lookout For anyone looking for "new" music... *especially* of the female variety... I *highly* suggest singer/songwriter Amanda Kravat (of Marry Me Jane fame - you know, the band that did the music for the film, If Lucy Fell with Sarah Jessica Parker?!)!!! For me, she ranks *very* close to Tori Amos and Ani DiFranco. In fact, I've always felt the passion she has in her lyrics are similar to Tori's. Sadly said, her cd is only available on her website... http://www.amandakravat.com. I've heard about half of the tracks so far (I bought the cd; it's still in the mail) and it's just brilliant. :-) So if you dig Tori and/or Ani... you should definitely check her out!!! Beth Orton is GORGEOUS..... OOOOh, i love her so much.. Her voice sounds like Fiona when you wake up to it. Numerous times I've had to figure out if it's her or not. But she's wonderful. Bijou Phillips is great as well, kind of punk meets folk. Great stuff. I just saw SRC with A Perfect Circle, and they sucked... but, the opening opening band, Cave In, was spectacular. If you like TOOL kind of stuff, check out Cave In's newest album, "Jupiter". It's highly creative and beautiful. peace christina - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2001 10:44 PM Subject: On the Lookout > > Ok, I am needing more music in my life (even though everyone claims I have > too much music now, but hey, I'm addicted, very happily addicted). They are a UK band and the lead singer is Irish, she's called Roisin Murphy. They are quite big over here (in Britain.) I'd recommend you their latest album 'Things To Make and Do' because it's good. If you're downloading, some of their stuff is on Napster, good tracks are Pure Pleasure Seeker, Indigo and Remain The Same. Hope you like them! Also if you like Kittie I would recommend My Ruin, they're quite similar. IMO their best songs are Stick It To Me and Terror. That's where ppl post about the latest "discovery" of female artists and talented musicians or up and comers to watch out for... www.ecto.org or www.smoe.org Also, check out http://wber.monroe.edu ...an online radio station that plays GREAT music...such as TORI AMOS and a lot from the list you and I both gave. Just go to the site and click on playlist and you'll find all your favorites :) Try the following: Sarah Slean www.sarahslean.com Sarah is a Canadian singer-songwriter that is signed w/Atlantic Records and is often compared to Tori Amos, although she has her own style. She has a beautiful voice and plays the piano as well... She'll have a new album coming out hopefully by the end of this year...or as early as this Fall under the Atlantic label. She currently has an EP "Universe" and full length album "Blue Parade" out independently. Not only is she talented musically and artistically, she's CUTE...You MUST check her out. Jack Off Jill www.jackoffjill.com Although this band broke up in November? 2000...I am currently obsessed w/their latest album titled "Clear Hearts Grey Flowers". They were an independent band...kinda like grrrl rock type music (not sure how to describe it)...but worth checking out imo. Others that may be of interest: Luna Taylor (www.lunataylor.com -solo acoustic up and comer from TX, strong lyrics) Julia Darling (www.juliadarling.com -pop alternative/strong lyrics & melodies, NO fluff) Happy Rhodes (similar to Kate Bush...experimental music/ ethereal) Tara MacLean (www.taramaclean.com/ -acoustic) Bonfire Madigan (post punk / cellist) Sarah Harmer ( www.sarahharmer.com -acoustic) I'm not fond of these, but they all have strong followings and is recommended by many: Emm Gryner (www.emmgryner.com/ -acoustic) Veda Hille (www.vedahille.com -eclectic music...best album of hers "Spine") Jorane (french cellist) Hooverphonic (trip-hop?) Splash Down (trip-hop? new album coming out in June) All the ones I listed ALL have female vocalists...I'm sure there are TONS more...but this is what I could think of right now. :) Happy hunting!
