"Tasawouf, or Sufism, is the esoteric school of Islam, founded on the pursuit of spiritual truth as a definite goal to attain: the truth of understanding reality as it truly is, as knowledge, and so achieving ma'arefat. In Tasawouf when we speak of understanding or cognition we refer to that perfect self-understanding that leads to the understanding of the Divine." http://www.ias.org/sufism.html "Sufism is a celebration of the love affair between the soul and God. The path of the Sufi is a journey of love that draws us into longing and ecstasy, into the passion and power that is awakened within the heart. The recent popularity of the Sufi poet Jalaluddin Rumi speaks of our hunger for this mystical love, this burning that belongs to the soul. mani rambha Through lectures, meditation, music, dreamwork, poetry, and other mystical practices, we will share in this tradition of lovers. We will open a doorway to the heart's knowledge of truth, the lover's experience of the one Beloved." http://www.suficonference.org/ JNe9027355@aol.com wrote: > As in, the cruel lyric....dance with the sufis, etc.... > all i got from the dictionary was "sufi=muslim mystic" > > Thanks, > AJ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 21:28:25 -0800 From: violet@torithoughts.org Subject: Re: what is the Sufis? >As in, the cruel lyric....dance with the sufis, etc.... >all i got from the dictionary was "sufi=muslim mystic" Sufism is a mystical branch of Islam. There is a very strong supernatural element to the beliefs. Not exactly a religion, not exactly a cult, not exactly a secret society, but with earmarks of each of the above, it is a very difficult thing to explain to someone who is not a Sufi. One of the most intersting aspects of the Sufis is that they are not allowed to seek converts. (The reason being that the disciple must obey every order of his superior until death.) About eight years ago, I was speaking to a new aquaintance about mysticism (a favorite topic of mine) and this person confided that he was a Sufi. He invited me to attend one of his order's weekly rituals. I went and it was amazing. We chanted and danced for about three hours, which flew by. I was pretty much in a trance for the whole thing, primarily because the repetitiveness of the dancing and chanting results in a sort of self-hypnosis. When the ritual began, the room looked much like this photo: http://www.dankphotos.com/whirling/images/arms.jpg We began by chanting and as a trance set in, we got up and danced. Not just any dancing. We followed the steps (and the chants) of the Master. It was similar to an aerobics class where you follow the instructor, only instead of doing aerobics moves, we were doing moves that were more similar to ethnic folk dancing. The chanting done isn't spoken, but sung, and the words and syllables used came to the Master rapidly in his trance. Like, if he sang, "Ishk, ya hu, ya haadi, ya haadi" ("love, oh he, oh guide, director"), then we would sing that over and over and over until he sang something else with a different tune. Sufis believe that every sound contains power and the repetition of certain sounds with certain intentions causes a focus to be attained (i.e. causing the human mind to project power in accordance with the meaning of the sound). Wiccans will understand this as being similar to the cause-and-effect of spellcraft (as in, what you put out, you get back). But the Sufi dancing that Tori is probably refering to is the whirling of the Dervishes, a specific order of Sufis. (The person who invited me to the ritual was studying as a Dervish.) Dervishes spin in place for long periods of time, going into trances. It is highly ritualized and very beautiful. It always makes me cry. (There is a wonderful sequence with Dervishes whirling in the stunning film "Baraka.") You can see photos of Dervishes in action here (and read some information about them): http://www.dankphotos.com/whirling/index.shtml There are also many books on the market on the subject of Sufism, but it is a very intense area of study. It's pretty heavy stuff. VH1 is having a poll to decide the best religious themed pop song and Tori's Crucify is nominated. In the summer, a show called "Rock and Religion" will air on VH1 about the songs nominated. Currently, she is in the lead by 53%! So I think you all should keep up the voting! Go to vh1.com. at the top, click on VH1 shows at the left of the page there's a link that says "rock and religion" click it and it will take you right to the page. *faery dust* Reese ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 14:47:28 EST From: Twinkle018@aol.com Subject: Sufis There was something in the post-Titanic Kate Winslet movie "Hideous Kinky" or was it "Hideously Kinky" (I think the former... but, anyhow!)... there was a part about the Sufis.
