I just recently got the "The Sopranos: the complete first season" on dvd and watched the first episode today...since I don't have HBO and have only seen it like 2 times during the 2nd season. Anyway, it was during the scene in the daughter's bedroom when a friend yelled out "Hey, there's TORI!" I thought it was cool how they used a Tori Poster on the set...it's one of the BIG subway posters..the one where she's sitting on the bed in jeans and has a toothpick in her mouth...and then I even paused the scene and zoomed in...and MORE tori sightings...next to the poster is a bulletin board..right next to the door. And I couldn't really tell, but it LOOKED like a ton of little pictures of Tori on the bulletin board, like a Tori Collage...it was very exciting to see. Thought I'd share that in case it hasn't been mentioned b4 or for those who didn't know or have seen it & missed it. Toodles ~ Leif ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 16:59:19 EST From: Cindy2Love@aol.com Subject: Re: Mermaid lyrics / SATY - abortion This is the last song I need help with for this girl's project, but I cannot fit the mermaid part in and I've racked my brain trying to come up with something really good...I have something, but it doesn't fit well with the rest of it... Am I alone on thinking this whole song is about abortion? Basically I think the song is about a young girl. Her boyfriend has dumped her for a "girl who thinks really deep thoughts" The young girl believes she is pregnant... "boy you best pray that I bleed real soon" She discovers that she is pregnant after taking a pregnancy test.... "my scream got lost in a paper cup" and "been saved again by the garbage truck" she threw away her pregnancy test which she's hiding from her mom ("the antichrist in the kitchen yelling at me again") The girl is now considering having an abortion... "I've got 25 bucks and a cracker do you think it's enough to get us there?" 25 bucks to pay for the abortion... And this might be reaching, but the cracker might be due to keep her from having morning sickness.... The young girl decides not to go through with the abortion because it's the easy way out... "one more casualty you know we're too EASY easy easy" I have more, but the rest isn't as good..... If anybody can help with the line: "what if I'm a mermaid in these jeans of his with her name still on it" I would so very much appreciate that!!! Thanks again everyone for reading..My favorite part of this list is the song interpretations :-) Much love, ~~*Cindy*~ ****************************** I won't say goodbye only see you in the dreamtime Tori Amos ****************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 16:56:17 EST From: Cindy2Love@aol.com Subject: Cooling Interpretation - I need help! Hi all :-) I'm basically delurking today because my neighbor who is in high school needs my help interpreting some songs for a music appreciation project she has due on Tuesday...... One of the songs I'm trying to help with is cooling and I have most of it down..... But I was remembering a beautiful thought added by a girl here on the list... I've been on this list since 1996 and I can't remember when I read it so she might not be around anymore, but if she is I'm looking for her... It basically was the part where she says: "And Peggy got a message for me from Jesus and I have heard every word that you have said" Now the person that added the beautiful comment said something like: Tori was telling a reporter that she was always a wonderful piano player, but singing didn't come as naturally to her... Tori then tells a story about how in junior high her choir teacher would encourage her to play the piano and not to sing....I think she was taking singing lessons from him at the time... One day in class a boy in her class passed a note about her voice to another girl in the class named Peggy (hence, the "peggy got a message for me") Their teacher intercepted the note passing and read the note aloud in front of the whole class... It basically said... "Myra Ellen sings like a frog!" It made me see the song in a whole new light. I loved that song to begin with, but that is just so beautiful and sad...Is Tori the deepest person or what? Well I was just wondering if the girl who commented on this song knows the source of this article? :-) If she does or if anyone else does you would be my hero. Thanks so much in advance! Lauren, I would be super interested in someone comparing hello Mr. Zebra and Pro Widow though :-) Here's some info I dug up: Someone commented: Early on when FTCGH was released people were speculating that "She's Your Cocaine" could possibly be a comment on the relationship of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain. Then seeing that Tori came on stage for the encore in a leopard skin outfit. If I remember right the song was she's your cocaine. Then thinking about the new song entitled "Celebrity Skin" made me wonder if Tori was saying something or hinting to us that the song is indeed about Ms. Love. Just wanted to throw this thought out there. I make no claim that I actually know what I am talking about. For all that matters Tori might have just been Tori and wanted to wear it for fun. My addition is that she also mentioned on Modern Rock Live that the song "she's your cocaine" is about a woman who is a black hole who just isn't a woman's woman. And about how guys don't see it, but other women do.....I'll try to find exact quotes...So I think she was talking about Courtney Love again... Okay some very intelligent girly wrote this and I can't remember her name. I have my own interpretation, but then I thought hers was so much better. I hope if she's out there she doesn't mind me sharing it. I tend to support the Courtney theory of the meaning of Professional Widow because 1) don't blow those brains, yet/ we gotta be big, boy: Courtney saved Kurt how many times from suicide? before he got to be a star and worth more dead than alive, then she confronted him about his heroin addiction and wouldn't allow him to quit his band, despite his pleas to quit and then got mad, LEFT HIM ALONE while she ran off to CA for a record deal. Excuse me? Is it obvious she wanted him dead or what? 2) starfucker just like my daddy: Courtney fucked Kurt, he was a (rock) star. Also, Courtney hated her father, she grew up in a house where her mom and dad frequently did drugs and had wild sex with music and movie stars. 3) selling his baby:Courtney has accused her father of selling her into prostitution and it's a fact he has sold her private life's story to at least 2 trashy papers (ie, The Enquirer) 4) slag pit (pit full of whores, slag means whore in England where Tori lives, Courtney could be called a whore if I used that word) stag shit (very powerful male symbol, to me anyway, like Kurt was to many) 5) honey bring it close to my lips: Courtney giving Kurt head (it was widely known, thanks to the media, that Courtney gave Kurt a blow job every morning upon his awakening) 6) it's gotta be big, we gotta be big, you gotta be big: Courtney loved sex (it's big= size of his cock) and money and power, which she leeched off of Kurt (we're big, your big=widely known, famous). 7)lord, give me peace, love and a hard cock...Courtney was a hippie and grew up in a hippie commune (peace, love) and again, liked sex (and a hard cock) 8) rest your shoulders, peaches and cream...Courtney had very strong shoulders, and a peaches and cream complexion 9) beautiful angel: Courtney posed as an angel on the cover of Vanity Fair, and also did some more pictures inside with the article where she posed as an angel 10)gonna strike a deal, make him feel like a congress man: Courtney hired someone to kill Kurt while she was in CA and made that person feel very powerful, like a congress man 11) it runs in the family: her mother and father obviously were savvy people surrounded by celebrities...how many illegal deals do you think they made for sex, drugs and money? 12) Brown may be sweeter, she will supply: Courtney and Kurt loved to do heroin, 80-85% of heroin sold in the US is Mexican heroin, noted for it's brown color . It is widely known that Courtney sabatoged Kurt's attempts to quit and supplied him with heroin on more than one occasion. 13) Professional Widow, the title of the song, says it all, Courtney is, by definition, a professional widow. Someone else wrote this...I read an article not that long after Kurt's death that had to do with whether Coutney was responsible for Kurt's death. The article claimed that her father wrote a book that was an expose of Kurt and Coutney's relationship. In it he claimed that Coutney did kill Kurt, or at least drove him to it. Her father was completely trying to bank on her success, the way many feel she tried to bank on Kurt's death. So I feel that the "starfucker" in the song represents Coutney's father, "selling his baby" b/c he wanted some success of his own, his 15 min of fame if you will, and therefore is striking "a deal make him feel like a congressman." This is my addition: Trent Reznor (from Nine Inch Nails) said that Tori and him were developing a friendship but some malicious meddling on the part of Courtney Love ruined their growing friendship. Spin 1996 : "Other people put their fingers in the pie, and they kind of messed up a friendship. We're not that close now. Some malicious meddling on the part of Courtney Love. But I still feel the same feelings for Tori." Then thinking about the whole "slag pit" reference. Trent asked Courtney to open for six of his shows once."The first three shows he didn't talk to her. 'In Cleveland she was completely intoxicated, a fucking mess.' He says that at one after show party she was passed out on a pool table with her dress hiked up, and people were taking photographs, as though it were all quite normal." Trent goes on to say that Courtney is fiercely competitive, and is obsessed with the media and how she is perceived. He called her a manipulator and a careerist. Basically she went around saying a lot of negative things about Trent (like saying he has a small penis and the band should be three inch nails instead of nine inch nails) and she said stuff that she knew would hurt him and I think she said some not very nice things about his relationship with Tori and that's why their friendship got messed up. Here's an excerpt from Details Magazine 1995.... It is time to tell the legendary tale of Charles Manson, Tori Amos and a curiously uncooked chicken. Trent and Tori had become friends (he sang on her last album) and she would visit him at the Los Angeles house where the Downward Spiral was recorded. The house where Manson followers killed Sharon Tate. On one visit, Tori told a depressed Trent that she would whip up a hearty home cooked meal. The cursed chicken. After 6 hours in the Tate house oven, it was still bloody and raw. Tori's preferred excuse : "The spirits of the house wouldn't let in in." Eventually Trent left for another studio, where he ordered in. And the chicken? He shrugs. "I didn't ask. The ghost ate it." Tori Amos is also quoted as saying.... "Let's put it this way, Courtney Love and I have never spoken. We've never spoken about it and we've never spoken and I think it's best kept that way. We have mutual friends. I don't want to put them in a bad position." "I wrote it about my own experience. I got all that nastiness out. The truth is, if there's a part of you, of Polly [Jean Harvey], of Bjork, or of Courtney Love, which is the black widow, then you will relate to the song. If people don't feel that way, they won't resonate with it." "I was going, 'Oh, I wanna see him crawl.' And letting that be there. Wearing a really cute fuzzy pink shoe. And having no limitation of exploring certain facets of the personality. And being shocked and horrified about Professional Widow, and then loving her - just loving the fact that she's convincing him to kill himself, guaranteeing that Mother Mary will supply. And I said, you really can't get any lower than that. I love the fact that she said, 'This is how far I've gone - this is where I am at this moment. Are you willing to see that part of yourself? The part that wants his energy, that wants his fame, that wants his light - not recognizing your own.' It gets to the point where you don't even have to push him over the edge - you're just reading him poetry, and that's enough to make him want to kill himself." - Do you realize you're seen as good copy by journalists?" Courtney Love gives good copy."Seeing as you um, mentioned Courtney Love, there's talk that you wrote Professional Widow about her. Is that true?"There's a lot of talk about her. One of my best friends is close with her. I would never dishonor that." From "Shock and bull TORI", Herald Sun newspaper (Australia), July 9, 1998, by Cameron Adams. I actually have much more on the subject (I could write a book based on this song alone) if anybody is interested write me :-) Sorry this was so long and here I thought I shortened it :-) By the way, I have nothing against Courtney Love so there's no need to write me personally to defend her - like the last time we had this discussion - I'm fine with her. This is just a way to see two songs. I didn't say it was right. Just speculation. Well, Starfuckers is a common term (ie the new Lords of Acid CD, Farstucker) referring to people who try to get in with celebrities for their own ulterior motives, or just for fun. But I think it was perhaps an unconscious, if nothing else, high-five between Trent and Tori. But yes, Starfuckers, Inc is about Manson. Trent has said so. The last I looked, they hadn't had to re-press the cassettes either. The UK/Euro releases had the following: 1) the first pressing with the original Talula 2) the second pressing with the tornado remix of Talula -- they apparently didn't have anyone fucking up the artwork like we had in the US 3) the re-release that added Armand's Star Funkin' Trunkin' Luckin' Duckin' Muckin' Buckin' remix of PW, and removed Voodoo -- this was to capitalise on Tori's newfound popularity on the dance floor. There are two more releases of BfP that I'm unsure of: the Aussie release, and the Japanese release. Both countries press their own CDs.
