But not everyone can be Grade A meat, you know? Some of us just fall along Grade F Taco Smell beef. ;) Or something like that. AJ wrote : << I LOOOOOOOOVE this song. but im wondering if it's an ode..... what's your take on it,everyone? >> Oh I LOVE Merman!! Its a very special song to me because it was my first Tori song, it was the song that got me hooked on Tori ;) I've always heard this song as a lullabye. The melody, the music, and the lyrics all say to me this a lullabye. "Go to bed the priests are dead now no one can call you bad" I find that lyric very soothing and relaxing. The priests are dead so no one's forcing religion down your throat, making you do anything you don't want to do, or call you unworthy or a sinner or anything, you can just relax and sleep peacefully. "Dream instead and you will find him" I think Tori is encouraging us to dream of a nice peaceful merman...."he doesn't need something your not willing to give" this merman is a wonderful merman, nice, generous, forgiving, he just wants you to forget all your troubles and go swimming with him in the lagoon. Of course there's other lyrics, like the past the apple orchard, but I think the song is basically about letting yourself relax and sleep, its a lullabye. I heard somewhere that Tori dedicated it to the boy ... in Wisconsin I think, who was killed and tortured by his classmates just because he was gay. "Who could ever say you're not simply wonderful?" Oh I just LOVE Merman! Its so beautiful! I play it every night right before I go to bed, it helps me relax. *faery dust* Reese ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 13:42:58 EST From: Talula514@aol.com Subject: Re: Caught a Lite Sneeze Micah wrote : << what's up with Marianne? >> A friend of mine downloaded a live version of Marianne off of Napster for me, and before Tori plays the song, she says a little speech about how the guys at Atlantic felt about her producing her own album. She said that the song Marianne gave her strengh when the guys at Atlantic told her she had made a piece of shit. She also said something about Marianne was the dark depressing song on the record, she said that every album needs a nice depressing song now and then, I don't remember her exact words. Has anyone else heard this little speech? Its quite nice cuz she curses out all the record company guys and the radios and stuff. As for the song Marianne, its quite obvisious its about a friend of hers that committed suicide. And all anyone can say was "ohhh too bad she was so pretty" like looks are the only thing that matters to a person. I think when she says "they're watching my every sound" means everyone's waiting to see what Tori will say about the sucide since she was friends with Marianne. The "Timmy and that purple monkey" part....I think maybe that means that everyone seems to be sad just because Marianne was so pretty, maybe lots of people didn't know Marianne like Tori did, so they just go "down at Bobby's house" and have a party and get on with their lives and Tori's left still grieving. I love the line "quickest girl in the frying pan" I think it means that in the cruel, unforgiving society of women, there's bound to be some casualties, and Marianne was one of first girls (maybe the first friend of Tori's) to fall victim. Its a very sad song. . . Micah - I totally agree with you about the part in Little Earthquakes (on Venus) Anyone like to do some lyric deiphering for Liquid Diamonds? That is one of my all-time favorite Tori songs (of course i have so many all time favorite tori songs :) I just die a thousand deaths when i hear that song.... the new Tori Amos Lyrics book comes out in 2 days!! *faery dust* Reese ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 19:36:19 From: "Lauren DePhillips" Subject: too many stars >"there's too many stars...and not enough sky." > >is this referring to how bombarded hollywood is with has-beens, >will->be's,etc? >- -AJ My take on this line is that we are all 'stars' in our own way but no one wants to let the other shine.
