So in order to "compete" the Japanese distributors add something to the japanese releases, usually an extra song or two, to make it different from an American release, and therefore more desireable to purchase, for more money, than an American release. This has the overall effect of making Japanese CD's more expensive than a US pressing of a disc when reimported to the US also, which probably pleases the Japanese economists as well. In general, it's cheaper for the Japanese consumer to import CDs than it is to buy the Japanese release. Thus, the record companies put an extra track or two on them in an attempt to entice buyers to get them. The Japanese CDs don't always have an extra track, though. The Japanese releases of LE and UtP, for example, are identical to the releases in the rest of the world (except for the obi). BfP was the first of Tori's Japanese releases to get an extra track, and that was just "Toodles Mr Jim" (IIRC). /nm {who is -very- happy to be in Australia right now, 'cause the Japanese releases are very easy to find here and they're -very- cheap too} ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 09:58:35 -0500 From: recount chocula Subject: Re: Taiwan CD's ~ when we last left our heroes, Mysterilady2001@cs.com exclaimed: >The Boys For Pele LP came in 2 unusual vinyl colors - clear vinyl >with blue hued label for the UK release and a clear green vinyl with tan >label for the US release. huh. i hadn't realized there were two different colored vinyl releases for pele. then again, i'm novice kollektor skum when compared to myst and nadyne -- my concern is collecting the songs, not the items. i'll pick up the easy to get oddities but don't go out of my way for the rest of the stuff. >I don't know a thing about >LP's being audiophile quality but I do know there are Little Earthquake LP's >that are heavier, thicker vinyl - called 180 gram. Europe gets really cool singles because singles are much more important than albums there. In general, singles sell better than albums. So to entice buyers, the record companies put all sorts of goodies on the singles. In the US, the opposite is true; most people will just plunk down the ten to fifteen bucks for the album, instead of paying five bucks for just three or four songs. In general, album releases are pretty close to identical. There are only a few cases where they differ by country. The aforementioned Japanese releases usually (but not always) get an extra track, although in the case of Tori those tracks are always easily available elsewhere. In Australia, because of the strict and somewhat odd copyright laws, almost all discs are pressed in Australia, so sometimes the artist will choose to do something special 'cause they already have to have another set of discs printed there anyway. The special Australian tour release of _Under the Pink / More Pink_ is an excellent example of this. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 09:56:07 -0500 From: recount chocula Subject: Re: why do you import albums vary? when we last left our heroes, JNe9027355@aol.com exclaimed: >i dont understand why all the imports differ considerably from our versions. >its really unfair...why do artists do this? artists don't do that -- record labels do. as for the the reasons, they vary from place to place. there are often economical reasons and sometimes there may even be cultural reasons. for instance, in the uk, single sales are (were?) particularly important leading to multi-part singles with different bonus tracks. addressing myst's question as well, japanese domestic releases are often more expensive than a north american or european release imported into japan, so the labels there put additional tracks on the japanese releases in order to entice people to buy them instead of the others. of course, a reason common to all locales is collectors. for artists with particularly dedicated fans, the labels know that there is a segment of the fanbase who will buy anything they can get their hands on. so, long as there's demand, the labels aren't too worried about being "fair" to fans on an international basis. woj ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 10:14:42 -0500 From: recount chocula Subject: Re: i hate hyper cds when we last left our heroes, Sliverain@aol.com exclaimed: >i just got the 1000 oceans single that has bliss and the title videos and >i can't get it to work. i get to the websiet and it tells me to log in or >whatever, but there isn't anywhere for me to log in. it's just a blank >screen except for the "log in" command. can anyone help me? you're better off not going through that website -- which may not even exist anymore for that matter. i haven't looked. the videos are stored on the single as mpeg video files. if you browse the contents of the cd-rom, you'll find them in the Content folder -- they're named TORI01.MPG and TORI02.MPG. they have some sort of copyright protection. i don't know much about mpeg video, but i assume there's some sort of header which prevents some players from recognizing the files as such. whatever it is, it certainly trips up windows media player, but some other mpeg players, such as vmpeg, just ignore the spurious data and play the video just fine. some video editting programs will probably also work - -- and probably can also strip out the header -- but i haven't looked into that. anybody have more concrete information on hacking these mpg files? woj ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 07:31:29 -0800 (PST) From: Jennifer Mitts Cypres Subject: The Wrong Band lyrics We had such a neat discussion on the lyrics to Crucify that I thought I'd chime in on a similar topic. This has evolved over the years from 7", 12", cassette to 7"/12" cassette, CD and then eventually became, in most cases, CD 1, CD 2, cassette. Basically what that means from the label's point of view is a chance to gain twice the revenue from the hardcore fan, and get a higher chart position than the artist who just released CD 1 and a tape. As such, to "encourage" fans to buy all eligible parts, (did I say "enocourage"? I mean "fleece"), live tracks, rarities and remixes are spread across the different formats. My biggest problem with this is whereas at one point, you'd get a 2 CD set, 1 CD with live tracks or B-Sides and 1 CD with remixes, they now tend to straddle them across the formats, making CD 1 have a remix and a live track, and CD 2 have a live track and a remix, making you buy both if you want both remixes or both live tracks. Another thing to quickly note is that about two? years ago, the rules were changed for chart eligibility to "make it easier on artists" (which was crap - it was to make it cheaper on record companies) meaning that there could be a maximum of three tracks on a UK CD single for it to be chart eligible. Thus, the days of the 4-track CD single are gone. {Although I believe it's still possible to have the main track and then three mixes of the title track} Mike ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 19:08:00 -0000 From: "Mike Gray" Subject: Re: i hate hyper cds Hi guys, I too, am against hyper-CDs on the grounds of having to connect to the 'net. Wish I did, but the fact that they'll play on older players seems to corroborate your thoughts, that basically, the damned things just have some junk built into them which makes them unplayable on more modern players.
