(it's an amazing book if anyone hasn't read it..:) and therefore, following, she's reminding the listener of the importance of the bird - the true self - the real, honest feelings and spirit one has inside -- cheers, chris ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Feb 2001 18:19:51 -0500 (EST) From: Richard Handal Subject: New album official info Hello: For those of you who haven't checked The Dent in a while and are otherwise unaware of any hints of this, I'll include the relevant sentence from a newsletter just sent out by ToriAmos.com-- >Subject: Tori's little Lorien >From: newsletter@news.toriamos.com >Date: Fri, 02 Feb 2001 14:34:53 -0800 >Reply-To: info@news.toriamos.com [ . . . ] Check back with ToriAmos.com in the very near future to hear exciting news about a 2001 release from Tori! Well, I always thought it was an analogy. You know how songbirds are kept in cages sometimes? I think Tori's bird (feelings/hopes/dreams/songs) are kept inside her cage of a body. If she kills her dreams, or if she lets someone else kill/break her spirit, she's left an empty shell of a woman. It's basically a line about empowerment. When Little Earthquakes came out, I was reading 'I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings' by Maya Angelou, and I've always made the connection. I think the title of the book is a metaphor where the bird is the soul, and the cage is the oppression of society. Maya Angelou's novel is a harrowing tale of a childhood, but at the end her 'bird' is still 'singing'. I'm going out on a bit of a limb here, but I'm fairly sure that I've heard Tori mention Maya Angelou in the past. Besides, the title of the book has become a known phrase. Therefore, to extend the metaphor, is Tori saying that if you kill your soul or spirit ('crucify yourself'), all that will be left is a pointless cage. There is nothing there left to sing. Well that's my spin. (What one of us Ladies hasn't done that? I know I have.) Its about not being treated right & still going back for more... again and again. Taking the BS until we have reached that painful place that urges us to run for our lives, to scream NO! Then learn put ourselves first in high esteem. I actually think of it in terms of actual dogs too. You ever see an abused dog? It will time & again come back to that person who abused it, only instead of coming back standing tall & proud the dog comes back whimpering, begging really, with nose down and its tail between its legs. That's how I see it. Of course Tori's songs are personal, complex and open to interpret in a way that fits the listener. It's our therapy really, listening... and seeing inside the lyric. That's my 2 cents on that. (The next part is a response to Micah asking more about our trip - feel free to read or ignore) OK, now for the rest ~ PT is Precious Things. Yes, my Sweetie, Jim, is here on Precious Things too - he's a fairly recent subscriber. I'm going to leave it to him to tell ya about the specs of our travel plans... what trains we took from where etc. But I can tell ya what we saw. It was a Go! Go! Go! trip & we saw a hella lot of stuff. In London we saw Buckingham Palace & the Changing of the Palace Guard (Swear to Gawd the guard band played 3 Elton John songs -Daniel, Your Song & Crocodile Rock - shocked the hellouttame), plus the Tower of London and its containing Crown jewels, Madam Tussauds Wax Museum (- which is MAJOR trip because you can touch the figures - put your arm around Brad Pit, ruffle Marilyn Monroe's dress and stand with the last 6 presidents of the US to take a picture. However, I must tell you the one thing that unnerved us wasn't the famous Chamber of Horrors, it was a Lady sleeping on a bench. We couldn't figure out if she was alive. Turned out - -She's wax.) We also saw SOHO (where my 14 year old had her eyebrow pierced), the London Dungeon, Harrods, Piccadilly Circus, Big Ben, Parliament, the London Eye & the Thames. I met my future Mother-in Law (really liked her a lot) and ate a fabu lunch at a local pub called The Bear that Prince Charles frequents. Later Jim & I saw a Manchester United game - they won :-) I really enjoyed the travel by car Jim and I did in England. I got to relax and gaze at the beautiful green hills and valleys of the UK. We traveled up to Manchester, which is close to Liverpool, for the game & afterwards had yummy Chicken Massala - an Indian Curry dish. We got to Paris by the Eurostar (fabulous first class treatment - THIS is the way to travel folks) and saw the Seine, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Louvre (Mona Lisa), Mini Statue of Liberty, a ton of other amazing buildings and the Arc de Triumph - which is the scariest part of Paris as its surrounded by a huge traffic circle and everyone drives however, wherever and at whatever speed they wish. It was both fascinating and frightening as hell. We did go to Disneyland Paris and that was neat - its pretty much like Disneyland here in California, only newer, more modern and fresher - they have an updated Its a Small World ride & a VERY COOL Alice in Wonderland maze. It was also cold as the North Pole too. I'm pretty sure it was at freezing temperature the entire time we were in Paris. Lucky me had my Sweetie to keep me warm though :-) My favorite part of the trip would have to be our romantic candlelight dinner cruise on the Seine (lobster, frogs legs, fillet of beef in bearnaise sauce, grand marnier souffle, baked Alaska & ooodles of champagne) AND our walk along the Seine afterwards, seeing the tower lite up and my Sweetie proposing. Of course I said YES, I love him dearly, he treats me like a Queen and he's a hellava good man - I'm a very lucky girl :-) We did take pics of our hands clasped showing the ring but the pics were too bright. Silly me thought it would be ok to take a pic close up with a white comforter as a background. DOH! I suppose I can lay my hand on the scanner and take a pic that way. We did take about 300 pics of the trip though - 200 came out pretty good. I haven't scanned them into the computer yet, but I will soon - if anyone is interested you can email me directly. Micah if you like Go! Go! Go! vacations you might really love Paris. It's a fast paced city and there's so much to do. We want to go back on one of our anniversaries and do Versailles. An interesting tid bit of info though - any idea what American food establishment we saw wherever we went? Nope, it wasn't McDonald's - It was Pizza Hut. We had pizza from Pizza Huts in both Paris and London. Pretty good too :-) OK, I'll be quiet now - I've used up enough space for 5 PT posts. Thanks for letting me share folks :-) And a special thank you to everyone who wrote to Congratulate Jim and I - Merci :-) I just asked Jim what his favorite part of the trip was and he replied: "Apart from when you said YES?" What a Guy! :::GRIN::: *And Micah, instead of getting stuck on one cd I get stuck on songs! For a while it was Tear in Your Hand, then Past The Mission, then the Father Lucifer mix, then Finn, then Datura, then... OY! Its like a 13 year old playing the same song over and over and over... driving her parents (in this case my kids) crazy! LOL!!! :-) ** Ooo one more thing - how could I forget this! When I met my soon-to-be Mother-in-law we sat in her living room. Someone turned on the TV and there was Tori! Coolest/Oddest damn thing - It was a video I'd never seen before - The Pro Wid - It's Gotta Be Big Mix video that shows clips from all the previous videos. Damndest thing.
