I'm not much for most pop music so maybe my experience is narrow, but I can't think of a single live jazz record I have where the date(s) wasn't given, and all the live Grateful Dead records I have that were released over the last ten years give the date(s), too. They consider it important. Hell, I have studio jazz records out the wazoo that give *studio* dates! I'm into a lot of reissues, though, and they tend to be profusely notated. And if it isn't normal for live pop records, her record company people should know how her fans are, and that we would want to have the dates. It's a disappointment to me not to be able to put the tracks in context. The live Venus disc is less valuable to me because of that. Of course, I'd rather have entire shows intact anyway, warts and all. But she wanted the thing to be "perfect" and something she could be proud of looking back fifty years hence. I'm afraid that to Tori, "perfect" includes no tiny technical errors that almost no one would notice, and a sense of flow was sacrificed by piecing that live disc together as was done. But she doesn't listen to me. ;-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 01:28:42 EDT From: JNe9027355@aol.com Subject: "cooling" this song is truly magnificent. what are your interpretations of it? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 01:45:40 EDT From: Mistakenbyu@aol.com Subject: Re: JNE's asinine posts So we all agree that what JNE wrote was stupid. Before jumping into the topic in the subject line, I want to sound in by saying the person criticizing The Dent is on crack. Sometimes it can be hard to find thing on it, but that's because there is so much information. It's the best Tori site---actually the best music fan site---I've seen. I wish I could find one for the Indigo Girls that was as good. Anyway, on the crying topic, I have to admit that none of Tori's songs, or songs by other artists, make me cry consistently (the exception being James Taylor's "Fire and Rain", it always kills me). Usually, I cry during songs when something particularly painful is going on in my life that a certain song seems to relate to. When my boyfriend dumped me two years ago, "Northern Lad" (he was from Michigan), "Doughnut Song", and "Jackie's Strength" usually summoned the tears. "Tear in Your Hand" and "Playboy Mommy" have gotten to me on occasion. The Indigo Girls' "Pushing the Needle Too Far", "Romeo and Juliet" and "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee"--the lines about Annie Mae in this song are brutal and true--used to really wring me out. Two other good tearjerkers are Stevie Nicks' "Landslide" and "Beauty and the Beast". Mostly though, even the songs I find incredibly moving (like "Winter" and "Cooling" and IG's "Blood & Fire") don't make me cry. Good to be posting again. I hope I'm not boring anyone. sweet dreams everyone, Tom _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. This topic occupies my mind, so I would like to give my comment. I know, Mike is on this list, so please don't feel insulted, indeed now I do love your page. I became a (german) LE-Toriphile in 93 short before the UTP was released, I also visited my first concert in the opera of Frankfurt then and fell in love with her and especially her music. But I was on my own, because I hadn't internet access and my friends interest on her music dissapeared. Due to a coincidence I meet a few EWFs in july 98 and was told about meet & greet, the internet toriphile community and... the dent. That was a very lucky and overwhelming experience, cause EWFs are such kind and helpful persons. I honestly enjoy to keep in touch with all of you through this list and at meet & greets. In january 99 I at last got internet access, subscribed to this list and visited the dent. My first visit was a little bit frustrating due to the large amount of information and a slow internet connection, but also exciting. There is so much I never would even have thought of to asked or look for. A slight case of overbombing I would like to call it. I too didn't found what I was looking for, because I was constantly distrackted by other interesting information. But after a while I get comfort with its structure, especially after its redesign. To JNe, spend a little time there and you will see. It's like when Tori releases a new album. I always think when I listen to it the first time, hmm, the last I liked somehow better, but after listening the third or fourth time it becomes my fav. So when I discovered the dent it was simply to hugh for me as a newbie. After touring a lot through the "Tori Amos universe" and coming back to the dent it still provides a lot of information - well it's just great. And if you really don't find there what you are looking for, try its link page. If you use the Site Map, the descriptions at the top of the entry page, and your browsers SEARCH or FIND function, things are NOT that hard to find once you really get to know the site, as Inke put it so well. Yes, you may have to put effort into it and it will take a little time to get the feel of the site. It is called research and it is a skill I am afraid some people are losing these days. Also, the main purpose of the Dent is to give timely news reports. Research is important (which is why I keep most of the stuff in the archives) but was never meant to be the main purpose of the site. The main purpose for the site is: 1) To give news reports on Tori and her web community. Those reports are in date order on the News page. You can go there and as long as you check the site about once a month see what Tori news items I added since your last visit. 2) Archive set lists and concert reviews I realize the site is not perfect and there are many areas for improvement. I am constantly making improvements. I just altered the Tour section to make it easier to navigate. I hope to have a search engine later which should make the site much easier to use. For now, it is NOT all that hard to find what you want. If you want an article or chat transcript, you go to the ARTICLES section and do a FIND on the name of the magazine, newspaper, or chat you want. If you want a TV SHOW, you go to the TV/RADIO section and do a find on the TV show you want. (I have details on articles and TV/Radio appearances from 1996 on.) If you want to find out about something Tori has put out musically, you go to the MUSIC section which is then broken into categories. Any recent merchandise released is in that section. And so on. The amount of info I have on the site is immense... 100 Megs or more of TEXT alone. Also, keeping up with different items is a challenge. For example, I have a page dedicated to the Hand Of Fate Soundtrack. (Music section!) It gets updated literally hundreds of times each time I get a new piece of info. How can I possibly keep dated links of the many changes I make to that page alone? There is NO way to summarize all the info on one page. It can not be done. If you are looking for specific info like, "Does Tori have any sisters or brothers?" then of course the Dent is not going to be the place you will find it. I cover news items or events. That means tv/radio appearances, articles/interviews, concerts, items you can buy, RAINN stuff, links to other sites, important Tori gatherings happening soon, and musical releases and awards Tori has won. I also provide a forum to talk about Tori and ask questions. If you want to know Tori's height or eye color, you likely will not find it on the Dent. It is a news site, not a Tori encyclopedia. That being said, if you would sketch out a diagram showing how you would organize the site, in such a way that it is easy to update quickly, then please do so. I have been doing this for 4 years and I can not think of a better way. But I am open to ideas. I incorporated many ideas on my last update and the site is MUCH better now. And I will keep making changes. But you have to invest time to get to know the site. If you don't do that, then you will never find it useful.
